Monthly Salary Of Resident Doctors In The UK by DiamondsAreFore(op): 4:26pm On May 15, 2025
From the National Health Service (NHS) website:

The monthly salary of a resident doctor (previously called junior doctor) in the UK NHS varies depending on their training stage, hours worked, and additional allowances. Based on the most recent data for 2024/25 in England, here’s a breakdown:

Foundation Year 1 (FY1): Basic annual salary is £36,616. After tax, National Insurance, and pension deductions, the monthly take-home pay is approximately £2,300–£2,500.

Foundation Year 2 (FY2): Basic annual salary is £42,008, with monthly take-home pay around £2,600–£2,900.

Specialty Training (ST1–ST8): Basic annual salary ranges from £49,909 to £70,425, depending on the training level (e.g., ST1 vs. ST8). Monthly take-home pay is typically £3,000–£4,200.

Additional Pay Elements

Resident doctors may earn more through:

Overtime: Pay for hours over 40 per week.

Night Shifts: 37% enhancement for hours between 9 PM and 7 AM.

Weekend Allowance: Varies based on frequency (e.g., 1 in 4 weekends).

On-Call Allowance: For availability outside regular hours.

London Weighting: Doctors in London receive an additional £5,125 (up to Core Trainee Year 2/Standard Trainee Year 2) or £4,613 (Core Trainee Year 3/Standard Trainee Year 3 onwards) annually.

For example, a resident doctor working a high-intensity rota (e.g., 48 hours/week with frequent nights/weekends) could see their monthly take-home pay increase by £500–£1,000, depending on their grade.

Japa for healthcare workers in Nigeria will continue unabated because the naira has lost so much value that the FG will literally collapse financially if Nigeria tries to compete with this wage structure.

Here is the monthly salary of UK resident doctors converted to Naira at the prevailing exchange rate:

Below are the conversions for the monthly take-home pay ranges provided for resident doctors in England (2024/25 pay scales, after tax/NI/pension deductions):

Foundation Year 1 (FY1):
£2,300–£2,500
£2,300 × 2,147.24 = ₦4,938,652
£2,500 × 2,147.24 = ₦5,368,100

Foundation Year 2 (FY2):
£2,600–£2,900
£2,600 × 2,147.24 = ₦5,582,824
£2,900 × 2,147.24 = ₦6,226,996

Specialty Training (ST1–ST8):
£3,000–£4,200
£3,000 × 2,147.24 = ₦6,441,720
£4,200 × 2,147.24 = ₦9,018,408

Soo dull. How about you also put the cost of their living expenses. You are comparing yourself to them. Do you spend in pounds? Why should they be paid in naira or equivalent to their peers in naira when they live in a more expensive society?

Even if they put everything including the cost of breathed air, they will still pocket as high as 1.8m monthly in Naira.
I just did an average calculation for it now and got #2.3m monthly after using an average expenditure in a UK environment

If your dimwit politicians had not destroyed the value of the naira, the incessant clamour for wage increases wouldn't be occurring.

And UK doctors are said to he poorly paid

I remember what OBI said that doctors and health workers are one of our great comparative advantages

We should be building more medical schools and exporting our doctors

I'm happy South East took this offer but we need at least 20 medical collages in each state of the South East to export 10,000 doctors yearly and 50,000 nurses

Where did you hear UK doctors are poorly paid? Or do you mean poorly paid by Nigerian standards?

How many hospitals and medical schools did he build when he was governor of Anambra State? You people will just be packaging nonsense for Nigeria. Tinubu may not be getting somethings right, but Obi have no moral justification to talk about doctors and healthcare, when he was governor, doctors where on strike for 13 months.
