Lagos Hospital Pays N20m Monthly Bill For 3hrs Daily Electricity by adenigga(op): 7:11pm On May 17, 2025
Dr Adedamola Dada, the outgoing Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Ebute Metta, said the hospital had been paying N20 million monthly electricity bill for just three hours of daily public power supply.

According to him, this extraordinary expense has led to the consumption of 80,000 litres of diesel on a monthly basis to ensure uninterrupted supply of power in the facility to maintain critical health care services.

Dada disclosed this at a media parley organised to highlight some of the hospital achievement and challenges.

He said the hospital generated 95 per cent of its own power in the past seven years to ensure uninterrupted supply to keep the facility running and meet the health needs of its patients.

The medical director, who noted that the development had impacted the hospital financially , said power was very essential for the smooth running of any functional health facility.

“We are the only federal public hospital that receives two to three hours supply of public power but we provide 24 hours power because we are automated and can’t function without power.

“When we wanted to switch our service to automated, a lot of people asked if it will be attainable because of the epileptic power supply in the country.

”We didn’t allow that to limit us; we factored in a power delivery mechanism, and generated 22 hours of power supply on our own over the last seven years.

“Though this development has eaten deep into the hospital’s finances, it is very essential for our service,”
he said.

He added that the quality of care in the hospital had attracted more patients and public recognitions over the years.

Dada said the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFEMAA) in 2022, declared the hospital as the most standard and compliant hospital in Lagos State.

The most recent according to him, is the Bureau of Public Service Reform under the Presidency, declaring the hospital as one of the trailblazers in the use of ICT in the public health sector, among others.

Reschedule your program
Use Solar for small consumption, then turn Generator for heavy consumption

It makes no sense at all, almost amounting to the legendary sleaze and corruption the civil service is reputed for (disrepute actually).
Let's break it down. A monthly expenditure of 20 million naira on electricity amounts to about 650k daily. If they're supplied with only 3 hours of power every day, then that's 220k per hour. Haba! angry
Furthermore, 80k litres of diesel in a month is about a hundred million naira every month for 24 hours power? It just doesn't add up to me.

Power Companies in Nigeria are LEECHES!

They bill companies and businesses like they were established with the SOLE purpose of making money for NEPA.

They come with UNREASONABLE and criminally ESTIMATED bills every month and make threats.

That's why I have ZERO pity for the NEPA guys that were assaulted by Military guys.

The government can END this MADNESS by mandating the Power Discos to provide Prepaid Meters for Businesses and Institutions like Universities and Hospitals.

Billing a hospital #240 MILLION NAIRA per year is EVIL.

This is Nigeria. That is a LOT of money. Unless the Hospital is making more than one BILLION every year, it's UNSUSTAINABLE. Especially, since they still need to buy DIESEL.

It's no wonder hospitals don't have equipment. NEPA is ROBBING them.

Any organization paying 20 million naira monthly for estimated billing is not serious.

Get a prepaid meter installed.

Wasting millions for darkness supplied because the money is not theirs but the government. The person in charge of that institution is obviously inept.

So, have you forgotten about the rules of " multiplier effects "

Are we ready to bear the brunt? That's where the problems is, charges a patient will get, the cost of electricity/ diesel must have been factored in to it.

God direct us o......

Before viewing this thread, I knew it would be somewhere on the island.

Most parts of Lagos island can't boast of 5hrs of light in a day

I think the name should be changed to Darkland
