British-Nigerian, Opeyemi Bright, Appointed UK Youngest Mayor by LegendHero(op): 9:56pm On May 17, 2025
Opeyemi Bright, a UK citizen of Nigerian descent, has been appointed the mayor of Barking and Dagenham Borough.

Bright, aged 29, made history as the youngest person to hold the position.

She was confirmed as the borough’s next mayor in April and inaugurated during a ceremony on Friday.

She had previously served as councillor of the borough in 2018 — also the youngest to have served in that capacity then aged 22.

She also served as a school governor, a board member of Agile Africa, an non-governmental organisation that equips young people with tech skills.

Bright joins the likes of Kemi Badenoch, Kate Osamor, Chi Onwurah, Bayo Alaba, Taiwo Owatemi, and Florence Ehalomi as UK political leaders with Nigerian descent.

She was born to Nigerian parents, Afolasade and Gbolahan Bright.

Her mother, Afoloshade, served as civic mayor of Hackney in 2006. She is currently a cabinet member for employment, skills and aspiration in Barking and Dagenham, while her father is senior minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

“I believe in the power of community, the importance of tradition, and the need to inspire pride in the place we all call home. As Civic Mayor, I am committed to being a voice that uplifts our borough, honouring local heroes, supporting charities, and forging deeper connections with residents, schools, and businesses,” Bright said in her inaugural address.

“It is not just a responsibility but a privilege to serve as a figurehead for the hopes and values of our community.”

The office of civic mayor is one of the borough’s oldest and most cherished roles, with a rich history of representing the borough’s heritage, values, and community spirit.

As mayor, Bright will act as an ambassador for Barking and Dagenham, celebrating its diversity, promoting local initiatives, and strengthening community bonds, information on the website of Barking and Dagenham council reads.

Bright enjoys cooking, teaching, creating content, and hosting career webinars for youth in Nigeria. She said she is guided by grace and ready to serve.

When I saw the the thread title, before I opened it I knew the name I will find there. If the thread title is on one is arrested with drug, I also know the name I will find there. I am not happy with the later, but I pray that God will bring healing to his people and destroy the work of Satan trying to impact these people with negativity despite their vibrance. Devil will be put to shame on them, we don't need to mock, but to pray for them. It is not what they want. Those finding themselves in the drug pushers from among them can't even explain why they are there.

Bro, na by force to comment.

@Topic.
No surprise. Nigerians have done exemplarily well in the UK and especially in traditionally 'blackish' London boroughs where they have been making successful entry into political and public administration leadership for decades now.

Congratulations and goodluck to the Young lady.

Yorubas don't brag they have bought the entire London and are "enslaving" the "lazy and unambitious Brits' in their own nation merely because they are enjoying success courtesy of a meritocratic society that regards hardwork and talent.

Yorubas don't dedicate their entire lives and focus to fighting those they met on ground in the UK. They join with them to contribute their bit to societal progress.

They are not nauseating supremacist always bragging they are better than all and forever insulting and putting others down.

That's the big difference between them and the 'developer' people.

Dear Nigeria and Nigerians, we're not your ene.mies. in fact, we're by default "glad tidings for us, glad tidings for you—Afenifere". Look beyond the lies they told you about us. In general, have we sold anything to you beyond kindness?

A synonym for Nigeria: " Yoruba et al." Or Yoruba & Others.

If it is crime-related.... we know our Southern brethren that dominate.

I didn't mention names so don't cry too much. Focus on getting a convenient space to hide under the bed tomorrow, Monday. 🛌

It's want not wants

He wants to acquire the property.

They want to acquire the property.

I don't understand why some people learn a language for over 10 years and still struggle with writing it.

That's why many countries demand that Nigerians provide English proficiency tests before getting PR and university admissions.

You think Brits would vote those who openly and proudly display an agenda of hateful and hostile takeover against them as your people show Yorubas in Lagos and as Rhodes Vivour, "I don't think in Yoruba", exemplified with his conduct in the lead-up to the 2023 Lagos Guber election?
