I kinda lean towards blaming the US side for not properly assisting the Mexican navy with navigation logistics. They were suppose to know the height of the bridge and every other bridge, and see what height the visiting ship has, and then plan around those constants, if no way for adjustments Seems like an oversight on both sides, and the Mexicans could have shown more situational awareness.

This incident is really similar to the incident that happened in Baltimore last year. Back then I posted a video that showed that the ship lost power a few minutes before hitting the bridge and it only regained power just before it hit. Basically, the ship was unable to steer or stop because it lost power.

According to the mayor of New York, this ship also lost power before it hit the bridge.

I wonder what the authorities are given as minimum vertical/air clearance nowadays. It's is usually good and safe practice to keep 2 to 3metres in pocket for charted heights and overhead obstructions whilst still mandating a minimum of 2 to 3metres minimum vertical/air clearance from vehicles and ships. That way a total of 4 to 6metres minimum will be the gap between vehicles, ship's highest structure and the overhead obstructions.

Hmmm ....saw that ship since last week moored at a pier in the Financial District ...wanted to snap a photo yesterday. I figured it arrived early for Fleet Week ...May 21 to 27 when there is like a ship parade with a variety of ships. This was a huge sail ship with lots of lights.Shocked to learn it was a war ship ...must be in the early 1900"s or before. They must be real careless or drunk for the ship to hit the bridge. I can understand if it drifted out of control and hit the pillar. How can they not know the height of the mast and the bridge clearance height? Not surprised no damage was done to the bridge... that's solid 1800's heavy duty iron. Will try snap a photo of the ship this evening....on the wrong side of the bridge this morning

Except perhaps this is a ceremonial parade ship like USS constitution and that beautiful Italian ship Amerigo.

It's my field. I know what it is. Even if it's a dinghy boat, as long as you have mainsail stack high up, you still have to do your overhead clearance calculations and report your figure to the authority for clearance before passing underneath.
