Covenant University is facing public scrutiny following the death of Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro, a former staff member whose appointment was allegedly terminated in 2024, without the payment of his terminal benefits.

A close colleague, Samuel Tuesday Owoeye, broke the news in an emotional post on social media, accusing the university of subjecting him and others to untold hardship by withholding their entitlements for over eight months.

“My brother and colleague, you couldn’t survive the shock,” Owoeye wrote.

He added that “Covenant University terminated our appointment in September 2024 and gave us three weeks to vacate our residence… not because we violated any regulations, but to bring down the wage bill.”

He further alleged that while the sack was painful but tolerable, the greater injustice was the university's prolonged refusal to settle their benefits.

“As I make this post, they are still devising how to cut, cut, cut… It is now over eight months and the organization we spent almost half of our lifetime to serve doesn’t care if we go and die. Of course, you have gone and now you have died untimely,” he lamented.

Owoeye recalled their last conversation on May 4, 2025, where both men discussed the harsh economic realities facing them.

Adding a spiritual note, he quoted Jeremiah 17:9 to describe the betrayal they felt: “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it.”

Owoeye expressed fear that even in death, his colleague might still be shortchanged.

“I am sure Covenant University will now call your next of kin and pay him/her what they like and not what you are entitled to receive. God will judge the wicked,” he concluded.

University yet to speak

Efforts to reach Covenant University for official comment on the allegations have so far been unsuccessful.

Multiple calls made to the university’s Registrar's office went unanswered as of press time.

Also a spokesperson of the school simply identified as Chichi busied a call put through to her line by our correspondent and requested that a text message should be sent.

When there was no response to the text messages, she was contacted via WhatsApp yet no response was received.

The institution, known for its strict disciplinary culture and Christian ethos, has not released any public statement regarding the alleged termination of Professor Olugbuyiro’s appointment or the claims of unpaid benefits affecting former staff.

As a church-run organization, I sincerely pray this is not true, or that there is an acceptable "other side" of the story.

It's scary to read what I just read.

It's one reason I don't wish to do any serious business with the church. I too have had my fair share of wickedness

The problem still remains, The Church was never a Place or an Organization as it is portrayed to be today all over.
The Church is the people, the hearts of the people that believe in Christ and Obey his commandments.

Absolutely.

The church where the Lordship of Christ is. The rest are man made institutions that may do some good here and there but will never serve as expressions of his body. Most people in such places protect themselves, trust no one but sadly consider all this normal.

The economy is really tough.

May the Almighty rest his soul and comfort his family. 🙏

But the way such institutions are praised to high heavens for exemplifying excellence in most of their doings, one would expect that issues such as payment of staff entitlements shouldn’t be eventful, not to think of 8 whole months.

I understand that settlements or entitlements depend on how one exits an organization. So if those exiting aren’t entitled to anything, state it to them as soon as you’re terminating the contract, so they know their fate immediately. Not some unduly long hopeless hope and “dying faith”.

It’s an honorable thing to do so if you terminate your employees appointment cos you can’t afford to pay him/her due to some circumstances rather than keep owing them for several months,it has happened to me before as well,and life goes on.
Federal government still owes my mom her gratuity and she’s retired over 8years and this one is crying for 8months cos he want to paint the church red God will judge the intentions of our hearts all. Any fool that can’t comprehend what I wrote should piss off already

When a company can no longer afford to pay its employees, letting them go is often a more responsible choice than keeping them unpaid for months. I've experienced this myself, and life moves on. Emotional blackmail over job loss isn't fair—sometimes, accepting reality is necessary.

For perspective, the Federal Government still owes my mother her gratuity even though she retired over eight years ago. Yet, some people are complaining about eight months of unpaid wages just to make a scene. God sees the true intentions of our hearts.

If anyone still can’t understand the point, feel free to move along.

Some people will say, Church build school and charge high fee, forgetting that standard school need standard lecturers and these guys need to feed and school need maintenance.. If they don't increase fees, they won't increase their pay either, it's not government school.

I pray they do something about it, labourers deserves their wages...

A whole Professor dying because of hardship. In America, a Senior University lecturer is called a Don like you're a big man for achieving that rank and position.
When I see hungry Professors around this country I keep wondering what is going on.

So so sad. My condolences to the family. But while we all express our disappointment on this church-runned tertiary institution, let’s also remember it’s an institution on is own whether church runned or not n they have there laws which they should outline to every staff n students of the institution whether church or not for it too survive. Let’s wait too hear a press release from them, to hear their own side of the story n why is this man not given any benefits since his appointment was terminated not a willing retirement by the deceased. Expect if the late lecturer himself committed any offense that denies him access to any benefits n led to his forceful retrenchment, so sad he won’t be here to defend himself but May God judge all men. But let’s wait to hear CU’s press release, so if they default to do so then the allegations are true.

Using a worse example to show that covenant is only slightly bad is not really the best play here brother.
