Looking at these student loan application numbers, something interesting stands out — the South Eastern part of the country doesn’t show up much on the list of applicants. What that really tells us is that families there aren’t scrambling to take out loans to pay for their children’s education.

In other words, many parents in the South East are in a position where they can comfortably afford school fees without having to borrow money. That’s a strong sign that the region is doing well economically. It shows that people have the means to support their kids’ education without financial strain.

So, while students in other regions might have to rely on loans to get through school, South Eastern families seem to be managing on their own. This paints a picture of a community that’s financially stable and better off — which is really encouraging news about the state of the economy there.
Before I buy into this your narratives, I would like to know how easy and straightforward it is for students in the South-east and their brothers from the South south to enroll. That will help to make more congent conclusions..

Most times, bottlenecks are intentionally placed to mitigate the abilities of folks from this two zones to access federal government largesse of this nature. It is the case in employment ms into CBN, NNPC, the Nigerian customs service and army etc..

So Before we rush to some comfortable conclusions, let's investigate thoroughly. Maybe the same people that juggled the JAMB results are at work here..., surreptitiously. Don't take the evil minded for granted..

It seems that Igbo students and students from South East are well off...not asking for any loan or grants

Or the parents in these areas are very okay ..it can be an economics denominator
This is also an indication of the economic well-being of the regions. Poverty is much lower amongst people of the South East compared with other regions.

It is funny how some people reason .They claim to be educated and have zero understanding of logic , statistics or how to reason

The conclusion some have reached................ Igbos are more well to do and have less need for loans

Factually the information we have been given does not tell us anything about the ethnicity of the applicants

The underlying assumption is applicants are from the states where these universities are

Let us work with that ..................

Recently there was a lot of noise about the JAMB glitch and how that was targetting Igbos

Now working with the first assumption that Igbos are admitted to Universities in their states and vice versa

Why does the so called JAMB glitch matter it would not make any difference UNLESS Igbos were being DENIED admission OUTSIDE their states?

If it is just as simple as everyone is in their lane guaranteed admission into universities in their own states there would be no issue

Logically we should ask are all universities equal in population ? e.g Most applications are from university of Maiduguri . Does that mean that they have a higher number of students

Maybe there are more enrolled candidates in the North

I am not saying that is the case All I am saying is that is the sort of question a logical person from Argentina who has no bias would ask
There are so many speculative reasons for the figures . e.g how aware are people of these loans across the country. People might be motivated to take the loans if they believe in the future they will not have to pay

Another explanation is that the programme is One year old and perhaps we need at least 4 years of data which is the typical duration of a university degree

In conclusion this is a snapshot. It is not enough information to use to draw the conclusion that is being drawn.

It certainly is stupid to draw a conclusion that it is poor people who apply. Some smart people might conclude that it is sensible to borrow an interest free loan even if they have the money because the naira is likely to depreciate by the time the loan is due and the government may even forgive the debt

Don't mind him. When the Igbos respond with the same statement, he'll still resort to his usual ethnic and tribal bigótry.

That is just self aggrandizement

That conclusion is not a non sequitur of the data

The loan is INTEREST FREE. payable after graduation

Why would I not take the loan even if I am well to do

Also the data does not definitely not tell us what number of applicants in Bayero University etc are Igbo

We simply were not provided that information
It is possible that 50% or more of applicants nationwide ARE IGBO

We DO NOT KNOW

So you are just spouting the usual compensatory Igbo boasting that we are used to

Why were Igbos complaining about JAMB glitch if Admission was just going to be only to universities in the SE huh

On the other axis of your boasting you claim to have dominated JAMB for years that means you must be across the country and represented in those figures whether it is University of Maiduguri or Ilorin

How is it even possibel that University of Maiduguri has — 31,643 students ?. Meaning they are even more than this, because you cant tell me every single student in that school applied for and got the loan. These numbers looks like a made up stats

My opinion is that anyone who is eligible should take the loan
I believe it is interest free and payable after graduation in instalments

Imagine if the loan has always been there

You borrow 1 million when the exchange rate was 400 = $2550
an you pay back when it is 1500 = $666

Even if you don't need the money just change it to US $ and keep in a domiciliary account

And when it is time to pay you are paying small small

It's not that they are well off, it was intentional for propaganda purposes. They want to continue singing marginalisation up and down.

Lovit:
Abokis sees govt money as their right, so I doubt they will pay back these loans

This also shows parents in the South are well off economically
Two logical flaws
1. There is no evidence FROM The Data that Abokis are the ones applying
2. It does not show that anyone is well off. Hardly anyone is well off in Nigeria.

It is really painful to see people who presumably went to to university that are totally devoid of analytic power or the capacity to interpret data

I am sorry but if you went to university it was a waste of time. You cannot reason analytically

The first thing is this the scheme started last year. It is NEW
How many years of data do we need to be able to draw any logical conclusions
A university degree typically is 4 years. So 1 cycle is 4 years. Will the same students borrow every year for the whole 4 years? We need more data
How many cycles do we need before we can make any meaningful conclusions

It is not. Not at all

The US is the biggest debtor in the world. does not make it poor

Poverty is actually higher among the people of the SE.

That is why they constitute the greatest number of internal migrants in Nigeria
HARDLY ANYONE IS RUSHING TO LIVE IN THE SE from other regions
It is the other way round

While this is good and it makes sense as an Igbo person, wasn't on social media foras that many Igbos complained that the southeast was excluded from the same student loan program?

Going by your assertion,it then means that Igbos are way ahead of you guys in academics, imagine occupying 50% of your universities and dominant in their own region,at this rate, given 10 more years,Igbos may dominate you in the universities in your zone by 90%.
The joke is on you.

Why are we not saying number of Nigerians that applied for student loans? Instead you will always see it regionalized. We can't continue like this.
