No one is talking about all the sewage emptied Into Lagos gutters. From highbrow Lekki and VI to the rough sides of Lag, all of us "pour" our sewage into the gutters running in front of our houses/offices. And we expect that the city won't stink?! Let's not even talk about the heaps of waste

It was much more worsened under military govt before the arrival of Asiwaju in year 1999 who came revolutionised it to what we are seeing today.
Talk another one?

Beremx:
it was worst under Tinubu when he was governor. Fashola came and sanitized everywhere. Ambode's impact on sanitation wasn't felt because he took Fashola's glory. Sanwolu's administration is lagging behind on sanitation after starting well.
One of the major causes of dirtiness in Lagos is open defecation. If you think I'm lying, take a trip to PPL bus stop along Lagos-Badagry expressway way just before Okokomaiko. The obnoxious open defecation going on in that area calls for emergency. The defecation is right on the open area between the two roads.
The day I crossed the express road, I nearly died of suffocation.

Which Fashola's glory? A Fashola that was drilling one borehole for N60m and used over N65m to launch his personal website? The most corrupt, overhyped governor in Lagos.

The challenge of cleaning up Lagos of today is humongous and can overwhelm and even humble the best waste management administor.

The biggest problem of Lagos state is the unprecedented influx of homeless people into the state ...especially people that come into the state on heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

Beggars and destitutes all over the state....these people have converted road median and pedestrian sidewalks as their toilets .

See Ijora Olopa under bridge that had semblance of decency some years back...one cannot even pass along the road these days without covering his or her nose because of the heavy stench of urine there.

I read her post You should understand that to most lagosians Visionscape never operated. All of us a not living in high brow areas , the lekki and ikoyis they concentrated on. So yes she is right to most lagosians they were never in operation.
what has being in waste management business or being stakeholder in wastemanagement got to to do with questions I asked her?

did I ask you whether Visionscape failed or not or if it was a foreign company?

did I ask you whether you live in lekki and ikoyi or not?

did she say anything about what most Lagosians thought?

did I ask you about the opinion of "most Lagosians"?

did Visionscape operate in Lagos and did it carry out waste management business under governor Ambode?

Pls go and read her post properly before you start talking. you just jumped in without reading her comments properly and you are just talking off point

Because APC frustrated him,he took away the psp from the godfathers and wanted a foreign company to manage the waste, that was the beginning of his problem he wanted to take away the feeding bottle of the elders

Coming out of the military era, Lagos was an eyesore. There were literally mountains of refuse across several parts of the metropolis. Tinubu came and cleared most of those mountains and put in place the framework for LAWMA.

Fashola continued his good works with the sanitation and beautification of many open areas across Lagos.

Things went very bad under Ambode due to the Visionscape debacle. The heaps of refuse began to mount again. People literally began to raise pigs at Mile 2 busstop because the pigs always had enough to forage and eat from the piles of refuse at the busstop.

Sanwoolu is doing his best against the back drop of the indiscriminate dumping of refuse. We the prople need to do bette .

papyjaypaul:
Here is the problem. Ambode went with a Local Government manager sense to govern Lagos and this was how he tackled waste. If you remember well, within the first 100 days, he did something called tarring inner roads or something like that. His biggest mistake was to elevate local government to state government level after Fashola had created a working system as an administrator.

What is an irony is that Ambode started his public service career at Lagos State Waste Disposal Board (now LAWMA) as Accountant Grade II in November 1985. He then went on to be AG of Local Government Councils.
It was during Ambode's time the larger public got to know that the PSP contractors are political contractors too and he wanted to cancel it. They fought back.

Beyond Ambode, local government and municipalities around the world manage waste but the corrupt system we are using in Lagos and Nigeria will keep taking us back to the sewage. The state has no business managing street waste, they should do something Fashola was about to make LAWMA do until Ambode came in and changed it. If you are on third mainland, you will see LAWMA building and Fashola started talking about how to treat waste, renew and recycle. Bode should have left trash for LAWMA but the unnecessary competition to cancel Fashola caused the state problems. It was also under Ambode they stopped the monthly sanitation program, something I think Lagos really needs. At least, you would have known your neighbors on that Saturday. That exercise was a covert security exercise but we threw it into the trash in the name of freedom and making money. I feel the Rwandans saw the beauty of the sanitation exercise and now they are selling it to show how Rwanda became clean.

This is another example of why I don't believe in the lies they tell us about master plan. If there was a plan, they would have been consistent and self correct whenever it goes wrong. What we have now is PAYG, Play As You Go.

Yes, it was the suspension of the Private sector partnership with his government that led to the waste management disaster. The new waste disposal company he brought in couldn't work at the capacity of the PSP leading to heaps and heaps of garbage all over the streets and roads. His unwilling to work with the blueprint put in place cost him his 2nd term bid

From this your statement, its obvious you are not in Lagos.

We Lagosians know what cost Ambode his 2nd term bid

Sanwo Olu is a failure when compared to Ambode and Fashola.
There were pigs being reared at Mile 2 bus stop. They used to forage on the heaps of refuse that sprung up beside the pedestrian bridge. You can ask anyone that lived in Mile 2 Estate and frequented the bus stop right opposite the current Train Station during Ambode's time. Ambode did averagely well in some aspects of governance.

But he failed WOEFULLY in the areas of road construction and waste management/sanitation in my opinion. He did NOTHING on the railway blue line that was started under Fashola; he abandoned the ongoing construction of Lagos - Badagry expressway; basically abandoned the entire Amuwo-Odofin - Ojo - Oriade axis.

You can hate Sanwoolu. But that man has done very well especially in the area of road construction and public infrastructure. The Blue line is up and running and the project to extend it to Okoko from the current termination point in Mile 2 is moving at a steady pace. The Badagry expressway has received massive attention. The Red line is also up and running. So many infrastructural projects currently ongoing.

I have nothing against Ambode or Fashola. They did their best during their tenure. But if Ambode had continued with Fashola's pace and work when he took over, he would have achieved a lot more. He rather spent his time fighting unnecessary battles and trying to erase the latter's legacies.

Waste business is big business. Japan are the experts of managing waste in the world. The streets of Tokyo are very clean and it's also a densely populated city like Lagos. So it is possible to have a system to manage waste in a densely populated city.

Over the past week, Lagos has faced a wave of online criticism as residents took to social media to report persistent unpleasant odors in various parts of the city.

The complaints sparked widespread debate about the state’s waste management systems and environmental policies, with many calling for immediate action to address the issue.

Now, the Sanwo-Olu-led government has come out to set the record straight, clarifying that the challenges are part of the city’s ongoing evolution toward becoming a cleaner, more sustainable megacity. Lagos government addresses 'smelly' criticisms In a detailed statement, the government emphasized that Lagos is not “smelling” but evolving, with significant efforts underway to modernize waste management and improve environmental conditions.
Very well said. Let's keep sentiments aside. The internal roads in Lagos, the gutters, sidewalks are very messed up. I have no idea what Local government chairmen and their councilors do. They ought to be directly responsible for keeping the environment clean. It doesn't take much to do that.

And we must learn to take constructive criticism in this country.

While it’s easy to point fingers at the government or institutions, we also need to acknowledge our own role in the problem.

I’ve personally observed people coming out late at night to dump refuse right in the middle of the Lekki-Epe Expressway, and I honestly can’t understand how anyone in their right mind would think that’s acceptable.

The solution isn’t far-fetched—for as little as ₦5,000 monthly, you can have your waste collected right from your doorstep by PSP operators. If we all commit to this simple responsibility, the streets would be cleaner, the environment healthier, and we’d see real progress much faster.

It’s a shared duty. The government has its part to play, but so do we—individually and collectively.

PH is by far cleaner than lagos at a moment. The last time visited PH February this year, I observed that everywhere, GRA, murokoro, airport road, waterline, aĺ under bridge , every corner was impressively tidy.

See lagos. Everywhere looking horrible and nasty especially u der this current state govt. regime.

I wonder how they destroyed the kind of environmental disciplines that Gov. Fashionable laid.

How can our enviroment be like this?

Waste management is a serious challenge in Africa. The situation is worsened by governments (local, state & federal) not seeing it as a major part of their governance.

Nobody can stop people from generating waste which would continue to increase as population increases.

Governments need to put in place structures for proper waste disposal by citizens. This is another means of revenue generation as well as business & job creation for a good number of people.
