Nigeria Produces Rice, But Still Imports It? What’s Really going on? by TalkTori(op): 9:28am On May 23, 2025
Nigeria will grow 5.6 million metric Tonnes of rice this year. So why are we still importing over 2.3 million Tonnes from countries like India? Our silos are full, yet our ports stay busy with foreign rice.

Is this poor planning, corruption, or something deeper?
Despite Africa’s rich soil and hard-working farmers, over 330 million people on the continent face food insecurity. Nigeria’s case shows us why.

While local farmers in Kebbi State struggle to sell their paddy rice, foreign brands flood Lagos markets. Even with rising production, outdated infrastructure, poor storage, and export-focused policies leave our people hungry.

Meanwhile, Africa holds 60% of the world’s unused arable land. So, the problem is not land, is it leadership, logistics, and priorities?

Let’s hear from you:
Which rice do YOU eat most at home?
A) Local Nigerian rice
B) Foreign/Imported rice
C) I don’t really notice
Tell us why in the comments.

Also:
• Should the government ban rice imports completely?
• Or focus more on processing and marketing local produce?

... Ban ke... Are you not in Nigeria when rice millers were lamenting about shortage of paddy rice., that they were unable to work at full capacity.. What about when the president of the association of rice farmers was saying that the paddy rice that they are producing is not up to half of what is consumed by Nigerians and they need loans and assistance from the government to meet demand after the government had given them billions upon billions of naira..
... What about those big rice millers that are now turning to museum..
Two millers where given license to import rice , BUA and that in Lagos. And BUA was saying it that he's going to make sure that he crashes the price of rice because of those hoarding it. ..
Rice farmers can't meet up and they are hoarding it . The moment government ban it, expect the price to go over 1000% in just a day . And rice is still ban but paddy rice is not at the moment.

We're not producing enough rice. So we've to import to cover the shortfall

We don't produce enough. Greedy folks still hoard just to keep prices high. I may not support this government but the decision to allow BUA to import rice is a good one.

These rice cooperatives collected billions under the anchor borrowers program. They embezzled it and few were able to pay back. We can't continue like this.

Abeg Naija rice farmers should get at! Buhari closed border to favor them and they almost killed Nigerians

That's it! Buhari closed border and they used the opportunity to milk and siphon Nigerians dry by selling at exorbitant rate. Now that foreign rice sells below 60k, local producers have no choice than to sell below the foreign one.
