Outrage in Okpanam: WAEC Exam Delayed Until Nightfall—Students Forced to Write in the Dark

On May 21, 2025, an alarming disruption occurred at Unity Secondary School in Okpanam, Asaba - Delta State, during the ongoing WAEC examinations, sparking widespread concern among students, parents, and educators alike. The root of the problem? Exam papers did not arrive until after 6 PM—well beyond the expected time—forcing students to take their tests under flashlights in dim classrooms.

As the day progressed, unease grew among the students who had assembled for what should have been a routine assessment. Hours ticked by with no sign of the exam papers. By sunset, the exam hall was shrouded in darkness, compelling students to rely on the glow of phone lights or borrow torches from classmates just to see their answer sheets.

The scene was one of confusion and mounting anxiety. Already burdened by the pressure of a major academic milestone, the candidates were now dealing with inadequate lighting and the psychological strain of an exam gone awry.

Parents were quick to voice their displeasure. One distraught parent asked, “How are these children meant to excel under such ridiculous circumstances? This exam is crucial for their future, and it was handled with such recklessness.”

Finger-pointing has since spread beyond the school grounds. Local and national leadership have come under scrutiny, with critics demanding accountability not just from WAEC but also from government bodies. A teacher present at the school remarked, “They’ll try to shift the blame to the state or federal authorities, but WAEC must own this disaster—they were not ready, plain and simple.”

As outrage continues to swell, there is an urgent call for reform in how examinations are organized and delivered. Incidents like this not only jeopardize academic integrity but also shake public trust in the system. It’s vital that corrective measures are taken immediately so that no other student has to endure such avoidable chaos.

Lol.
Education is a joke in Nigeria.
You won't even understand how resilient we are Untill you write a foreign exam(very conducive).

Back in Uni I had an exam scheduled for 10am according to the timetable but due to some technical issues we ended up writing it by 8pm.
Now here is the key takeaway, 85% of the class failed the exam, why? we were hungry, exhausted and drained yet, to stick with the academic calendar, they had to force us to write the exam.

Some even missed it, as they had already left hoping the exam won't hold.

Agreed, WAEC wasn’t ready or prepared in good time with their exam materials.

So, a government school in an oil producing state doesn’t have functioning generator set to power the school for the exams? 😢

Only in our beautiful nation Nigeria can this be possible. I remember doing same during our university days. We wrote exams with candles because no Torchlight phone then. Crazy after all these years we are still stuck in the same spot.

He single handedly built Lagos from nothing to something, now he is demolishing a country from something to nothing.
It takes a million people to build a whole great reputation, but it takes one stupid fool to destroy everything

This is the result of hyper corruption the black man does to their country. If the money was directed to the right places, Nigeria would be a wonderful place. No natural disaster, huge mineral resources, fertile land, global recognition, high population etc. We have everything yet we are the ones destroying our country with corruption.
