Can't they just put an end to this practice that is not legalised?

In many cases, the boys are been disappointed

I don't seem to see any need for it anymore

How Best to Resolve the Issue: A Path Forward
To preserve trust and stability within the Onitsha Electronics Market—and protect the dignity of both apprentices and their mentors—it’s crucial to handle this situation with fairness, transparency, and respect for tradition. Here are key steps that can help resolve the issue and prevent future disputes:

1. Independent Mediation by Trade Unions
Market unions and Igbo apprenticeship regulatory bodies should step in as neutral mediators. A panel comprising respected market leaders, elders, and legal advisors should be formed to:

Review the apprentice’s years of service.

Assess the fairness of the settlement.

Investigate the theft accusation transparently.

2. Transparent Financial Audit
To address the ₦18 million theft allegation, an independent financial audit should be carried out. If there’s evidence, it must be presented clearly. If there’s none, the claim should be publicly dismissed to clear the apprentice’s name.

3. Written Apprenticeship Agreements
This case highlights the need for formal documentation in apprenticeship arrangements. A signed agreement should outline:

Duration of service.

Expected settlement terms.

Rights and responsibilities of both parties.

This would prevent misunderstandings and create legal backing for both the apprentice and the Oga.

4. Strengthen the Igbo Apprenticeship Model
The traditional Igbo apprenticeship system (Igba Boi) is globally respected for its role in empowering young entrepreneurs. Incidents like this risk damaging its reputation. Leaders should consider:

Setting minimum settlement benchmarks based on market standards.

Offering conflict resolution training for mentors and apprentices.

Encouraging accountability through digital record-keeping and mentorship tracking.

5. Public Communication
Both parties should be encouraged to avoid further public conflict. A joint resolution statement—after mediation—is ideal to restore peace in the market and maintain customer confidence.

Conclusion:
This incident is more than a personal dispute—it's a wake-up call to strengthen the apprenticeship system that has empowered countless youths. By approaching the issue fairly and systematically, Onitsha traders can turn this conflict into a stepping stone toward reform and renewed trust.

Oga must be made to provide evidence of stealing against the boy.
If no evidence, he should be made to pay the boy his due amount

Still the best apprenticeship model existing that sets up young ones for the future

Unlike the model that gives children plastic plates to go out on the streets

False reverse psychology

The Truth is one of YOUR PEOPLE tried to cheat a so called apprentice after serving him for many years

Instead of taking responsibility for a flawed system you are trying to spin the story

The reality is that the so called Igbo apprentice system is outdated and open to abuse

What is needed in 2025 is not an intangible unwritten agreement but

1. Legislation that covers the practice
2. Clear written contracts that are enforceable within the legislation

The settlement figure should not depend on the whims or goodwill of the Oga

As a matter of fact I would encourage Lagos state to BAN THE PRACTICE

Any so called apprentice MUST be at least 16 years old, registered with the government paid a salary, and pay tax to Lagos State government

The government should take charge of the scheme like NYSC. You want to do apprenticeship apply to the government and government post you and you get similar protection and supervision like Youth Corpers

The oga is not a smart liar at all, how can you said he stole N18M, without reporting the case to the law enforcement agents.

Igbos hate injustice, the market union will close Oga shop if he doesn't comply by adequately compensating his apprentice, the market people possibly know that the Nwaboi was not corrupt, even if that Nwaboi is Yoruba or Hausa they will stand for him against their kinsmen, this is what makes them progressive
Sentiment and 🤥 lies. Na today?

Stop deceiving yourselves and trying to rewrite the story

You see an Igbo doing wrong and are trying to counter any truth before it comes

Justice is writing a contract from day one not a nebulous open ended agreement that is weak in court

If Igbos hate injustice so much how come there is no Ombudsman or Adjudication or Formal dispute resolution mechanism after all this years?

The Obvious question is this
HOW MUCH MONEY IS RIGHT ?

The answer?? It depends......................

Depends on whathuh?

No answer

That is what you get when there is no written contract

That puts all the power on the side of the Oga he gives what HE THINKS IS OKAY and if the Nwa boi is unhappy he can only fall to the court of public suasion and morality

It is an outdated scheme that needs to modernize.

A situation where you serve for 7 years and you have no agreement IS SLAVERY

A lot of Igbo men today have made a mess of this age long culture of apprenticeship...!

Why?!! All because of greed and selfishness.

The way you guys romanticize your tribe as though every thing is peaceful and interethnic wars and hate are not currently ravaging the SE. I laugh at your delusion. You and I know that if Biafra becomes an independent state today, the probability of it surviving three years without resorting to civil war is low, to be quite frank.

Just pay them a salary and also let them pay tax . Government needs the revenue and that is a way of cheating government

Lagos State needs to wake up
