Stupid thoughts. Saying cheap fuel in Nigeria makes it lucrative for illegal selling to neighboring countries. This is like saying the government should inflate fuel price be that. Rubbish |

I have always argued that the rate of price increases and brutal reduction in purchasing power of the masses is due to the incompetence and greed of bat and his cronies, nothing more. Those who always scream that prices should increase to ensure efficiency are just parroting a line they do not understand. Under a focused and responsible administration, before any full deregulation is considered, the following steps are a must: 1. sanitisation of the entire system by identifying the inefficiencies that have made subsidy impracticable in the first place. 2. Tackle the corruption within the system. 3. Harness all other resources and develop them so that they also contribute to the overall revenue. You cannot increase the socio-economic burden without first harnessing all reasonable revenue sources. 4. Revamp the security architecture. 5. Ensure whatever negative effects of subsidy removal are first borne by the political office holders, elected and appointed. They should lead by example. |

lexy2014:33,000 litres per a Big tanker. Is that not big enough for those behind this evil work of Smugglers to disrupt the Govt plans? Why do we like to always use those Countries not up to 4- local governments in Nigeria,to be comparing to over 200 Millions NIGERIANS? |

Moroccoguy:The smuggling doesn’t happen at the Cotonou side, it only happens at our own end! The government and people of Benin are simply exporting at their own side, with all dues paid for by the exporters, but smuggled into Nigeria because they want to avoid all taxes which would swell up the price of the commodity |

Make dem nor even think about wetin dem wan do This was the exact release they gave for the fuel hike the last time We are back to same place. Hiking the price of fuel is not the solution Improve the economy let the naira gain value and see how smuggling would end |

NaijaNaWaa:There could be harm . Could being the operative word consider the following 1. Even if there is no subsidy the market is not totally unregulated that means that dealers cannot sell at any price they like. There is a markup limit set by regulators. so it is not a perfect market 2. Depending on exchange rate and purchasing power dynamics as well as their own supply and demand issues . Our neighbours may have a greater tolerance for and capacity to pay much higher prices than us. In fact anecdotal evidence suggests that is the case. Potentially that would reduce the local supply with risks of scarcity and disruptions 3. So if there is no restriction on export to our neighbours then we effectively become one market which is not necessarily bad or something I oppose but if we choose that then it must be intentional based on analysis , understanding and clear trade framework whether within ECOWAS or bilateral . A bigger market will mean overall more aggregate demand 4. There is nothing stopping Dangote from doing that from Lekki to Benin , Togo , Ghana etc. Why should petrol be transported by trucks across our infrastructure to end up in Niger or Mali let us not forget that they have opted out of ECOWAS. If that is to happen I think there should be some kind of Tariff or charge for that and would have thought so even if they were in ECOWAS. There should be a road tax for trucks taking petrol from Lagos to Burkina Faso if such was actually happening So talk of smuggling is not BASELESS as you call it they should pay us = drop something |

SarkinYarki:Can you explain what he said? If the value of Naira to the dollar improves the price of fuel in Nigeria will become cheaper than it is and this will further increase the incentive for smuggling! With this you should see that what he said doesn’t make sense? |

Please don't call it smuggling, call it individual export. Because they buy from dangote who government is not paying subsidy and then they sell to our neibouring countries with a slight mark up. How is that governments problem. Are they no suppose to be happy for the people doing the business by ensuring that they pay their fair share of taxes. This matter na waloo inoki247: |

How does this smuggling affect us negatively for God sake. It inky increase the market share of fuel producer which is a good thing. We don't have fuel ques and dangote has not complained that he is short of products to service the nigerian market. If some persons are pained that our neighbors are buying from us. I suggest they build a fuel depot close to the border and be selling g for export for profit from there. Make them allow our fuel to be cheap abeg. 850 naira is still wayyy too high Babaolose: |
| Re: Price Of Nigerian Petrol Makes Smuggling Into Neigboring Countries Attractive by 2packer(m): 7:22am On May 25, 2025 |
aribisala0:Thank for this beautiful write up but let me respond to paragraph 3 and 4. If govt want to restrict export they should do it buy getting the customs and border patrols to do their job and not by raising pride to further suffer Nigerians. As for your road tax suggestion. The tax is an apt idea but should not be on all trucks in the country. It should be placed only on trucks crossing the border to neibouring countries. Make them allow Nigerians breath abeg. 850 naira per litre of fuel is way still beyond the reach of nigerians |

Gboss247:Yeah, that is a sign that the subsidy costs were so large that by the time it ended, there were a load of outstanding debts...which is what you are referring to. Subsidy, otherwise, is gone. ANd no, I am not pro-tinubu. This is something I have been backing its removal since 2011, and by the way, I believe the government of today is corrupt, and don't trust them. |
