A student met me and asked me to explain this in simple terms to him since I read one of the science courses(they were given this as an assignment). Why is water able to climb through this in our kitchens despite it being hollow? Why does it flow even if we pour the water without pressure? I told home to give me some time. I don dey sweat since yesterday ![]()

The simple explanation you can give to a child is gravity The exhaust is lower than the hollow point thus anything that goes up must come down |

if I do understand this, there is constant pressure even when it seems there isn't any. so the pressure keep pushing the flow of water. where does the pressure comes from? simply the source, where the reserve is. in the case of the physically visible reservoirs (tanks) around where they lack pumps to push the water into our houses the height of the reservoir (tank) and water level in the tank determines the pressure. |

That's for passing the dirty water |

I hate seeing anything under the sink. |

Gravity!!! The sink is placed higher than the exit hole/outlet. As long as the hallow, bend and outlet is lower than the sink, gravity will push the water through. Remember that water is an incompressible fluid, so the downward force of gravity will push air into the sink hole creating air pressure in the pipe, which will in turn push the water out. A few water will remain in the bend once and air gap is created. |

RealLordZeus:Nope, It's called Capillary Action |

GravityDefier:So, you know how sometimes you see water moving up a paper towel or a cloth when you spill something? That's because of something called "capillary action". Imagine the tiny fibers in the paper towel or cloth are like tiny straws that the water molecules can fit into. The water molecules like to stick to these fibers, and they can crawl up the straws really slowly. It's like the water molecules are holding hands and climbing up the fibers together! When you pour water onto the paper towel or cloth, the water molecules start climbing up the fibers, and that's why you see the water moving up. It doesn't need any extra push or pressure because the water molecules are attracted to the fibers and can climb up on their own. |

GravityDefier:When you pour wastewater into the sink, it flows down the drain because of gravity. Gravity is like a strong force that pulls things towards the ground. The water flows down the drain because the pipe is sloped, or angled, so the water can flow easily downwards. It's like a slide for the water! The water doesn't need any extra pressure to flow down the drain because gravity is helping it along. The force of gravity pulls the water down, and it flows out of the sink and into the pipes. |

Nairalander248:I said the simple.. you can't explain capillary action to a child of under 10 years |

GravityDefier:The water won't flow until that hollow is filled up. The excess after the hollow had filled up is what is flowing. If you remove that hollow pipe, water that had stored will come out and the next set water will not flow out until enough water had stored and filled that hollow space |
