I think it should be criminalized across Naija to curb the excesses and arrogrance of Naija men when it comes to adultery.

Then you the woman should also be punished

I say this as a single woman who has been at the receiving end of far too many advances from married men. Most of them see nothing wrong with adultery, they make all kinds of excuses and arguments, to justify why it is not wrong.

Some will even argue that it is not a sin, it is an expression of love and feelings between a man and a woman. The way we practice this religion in Naija is too much, we over do it, blah blah blah blah. This is the latest argument I heard from a 60 year old married man grin.

I prayed for the salvation of his soul today. A lot of them think the bible is a joke and God is joking when he lists adultery as a sin. Perhaps making it a criminal offence may help to reset or rewire their brains.

Adultery may be a sin, but it should never be a crime.

LEAKED S.£.X TAPE: Let’s Talk Law, Not Just Morals

The internet is boiling over the leaked s*x tape of an Anambra man and woman, who were allegedly married to other people. While opinions are flying everywhere, “They’re divorced!” “No, they’re still married!”, let’s assume they’re both still married for purposes of this discussion.

Now let’s face the real question: Is adultery a crime in Anambra State?

The answer is NO. Let me break it down:

What is adultery?

It’s when a married person has voluntary sexual intercourse with someone who is not their spouse.

But is it a CRIME? No.And here’s why:
A crime is an act made unlawful by a written law, punishable by fine or imprisonment.

In Anambra State, and the entire southern Nigeria, no written law criminalizes adultery.Shocking? Maybe.
Unjust? That’s debatable.But that’s the LAW.

So while adultery might be morally scandalous, it is not legally punishable as a crime in Anambra.

However, in some Northern Nigerian states where Sharia law applies, adultery is a criminal offence, and it carries heavy penalties.

Bottom line?Adultery is a fact if successfully proved could led to divorce but not for jail in Anambra State. Meanwhile, I have written a blog article on adultery and divorce. https://www.elawfirm.ng/adultery-and-divorce-in-nigeria/

So don’t be misled, morality is not always the same as legality.

What do you think? Should adultery be criminalized across Nigeria? Or should it remain a civil (and personal) matter?

Let’s talk in the comments.

Adultery is not good. but why is it that most married women will not tell a man toasting her straight that she is married. A married woman was appreciated and you asked of her name and she said Elizabeth, is that her name? Why not Mrs So so so. Women should stop accepting other men in extra martial affairs. Or pull out of the marriage to remain a divorcee.

For Men, God created the Testosterone and it's the hormone responsible for feelings towards women, except it's too low ( sickness) men MUST experience that feelings only by seeing. If Men also are aroused only by touching and not looking, it would have been far better, but No, it's by site seeing.

Criminalising this will only put more men in trouble but can never end it because it doesn't start today. As it was in the beginning, so now and so shall it be after we all died.

Your first paragraph proves that you don’t know what you are saying. Many cultures in Nigeria support a man marrying multiple wives, just like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, Solomon and several others in the Bible. But I have heard of only one culture that supports their women sleeping around, but still doesn’t support their women being married to more than one man.

This reminds me of the question I asked Christians who were protesting against shari'a in the north; "what are you afraid of about Shari'a even if it's going to be applied to you as a Christian?" And they will reply with; "they will not let you drink alcohol, stay in hotel with your girl friend and they can cut your hand, stone you, flog you up to 1000 strokes of cane for breaking the law". And I ask them; "have you read the laws of Moses in the Bible, because everything his laws say you shouldn't do and what you get for doing them are if not the same, similar to the shari'a law, so you want to be breaking the Bible laws without getting punishment for them? Fornication and adultery is a crime by the laws of Moses, so why protest against what and how the Bible say a christian should live? Most Christians and/or people who call themselves Christians these days and as it was then are hypocrites grin

The English law that we are practicing in Nigeria was not based on morals or religion but on culture of the English people and how they want their society to be like. But we are copying and pasting the law on ourselves yet have a completely different culture so what you'll get from that is "round and round we go", :Dno progress.

You were making sense when you said it should be criminalized but lost your oblongata when you got to curbing excesses of Nigerian men.

It usually takes 2 people to commit adultery, so it will affect both sexes.

From your assertion, what would now be the purnishement for Paternity Fraud?
