It is the video codecs, how the video movie file is encoded and your TV did not have the specialize inbuilt software or app to play such video except the default player that's why it's giving that error message.. unlike windows system or your smartphone where you can download different video player apps to play movies.
You can only play such video on laptop, with VLC player ofcourse.

Nothing is wrong with your flashdrive or OTG. Such TV can't play highly encoded videos like some MPEG, mkv format e.t.c

I don't think there is such physical cable to connect from your phone to tv. Except for connecting it wirelessly through WiFi and others like YouTube link code, e.t.c
it's only on laptop that you can connect with HDMI cable to your TV

Your best option is to watch it on computer with VLC. VLC can watch almost all video formats

There's even mirror cast option on some TV and phone, that you can project or connect your phone to display on the TV wirelessly.

Get a video converter software on your computer and convert the movie to the file your TV supports. Its probably .avi or .mp4, find out which one and convert all movies to it and then you can play them on your tv.

AndroBlaze,kudos!

@ OP, right here is your solution.

Check the format of the files that are successfully playing on your TV, then convert the other files to that format.

The error message says "file format not supported".. it means your TV can't play the video formats you downloaded.
Most times it's mp3 songs for music and mp4 for videos. Get those videos converted or you re-dowmload them in mp4 format.

There are gadgets available to display your phone screen on non smart tv. Search online. The Chinese made a lot of progress.
Or you can get android tv box to convert your TV to smart tv so you won't face such challenge again and the stress and time in converting movies to playable formats.

When you don't know say you don't... Google "type C to HDMI" you will see lot of them

Kernalboy you can try renaming your video extension on your phone to MKV, FLV, HEVC formats before sending to your TV.

Or check the ones playing copy them back to your phone and check the extension what formats they are using...

what if his phone is normal micro USB not type C port.
And that TV can't play those file format you mentioned mkv, flv e.t.c it's only mp4 it would play fluently with sound.

It sounds like you're facing an issue where only a few of your downloaded movies play on your TV, and you're seeing a specific error message (likely related to format or unsupported file). Based on your description, here are the most likely causes and how to fix them:

📍 Common Reasons Why Some Movies Don’t Play on TV
1. ✅ Unsupported Video Format
Most Common Cause.

Many TVs only support specific video formats like .mp4, .avi, or .mkv, and specific video codecs like H.264.

If your movies are in formats like .mov, .webm, or encoded with uncommon codecs, your TV may reject them.

💡 Fix:

Use a video converter like HandBrake or Format Factory to convert videos to:

Format: .mp4

Codec: H.264 (AVC) for video and AAC or MP3 for audio

2. 📁 File System Format of the Flash Drive
Your TV may only read flash drives formatted in FAT32 or exFAT.

If your drive is NTFS or corrupted, it might fail to read some files.

💡 Fix:

Plug the flash drive into your computer.

Right-click > Properties > Check File System.

If it’s not FAT32 or exFAT, back up your files and reformat the drive.

3. 🔌 OTG Cable or Flash Drive Issue
A damaged or poor-quality OTG adapter or flash drive may cause data errors, leading to unreadable files.

But if some movies play and some don't, this is less likely the main issue.

💡 Fix:

Try the flash drive directly in the TV (if it has a USB port) without the OTG cable.

Test the flash drive on another TV or computer.

4. 📺 TV Software Limitations
Some TVs are limited in what resolution, bitrate, or codecs they can process.

Older or budget TVs may struggle with 4K files, high bitrates, or newer formats like HEVC (H.265).

💡 Fix:

Convert the movie to 1080p MP4 (H.264) using a free tool like:

HandBrake

Any Video Converter
