Tragedy struck in the Ota-Ona area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Monday afternoon after an uncompleted two-storey building collapsed, sparking panic among residents and raising fears that several people may be trapped beneath the rubble.

Uncompleted Building Collapses Opposite Mobil Filling Station

The incident occurred directly opposite the Mobil Filling Station (formerly Bugon Filling Station) in the Ota-Ona axis, a typically bustling part of Ikorodu. According to reports shared by Facebook user Rasheed Fatuga, the building suddenly caved in around midday, prompting a swift emergency response.

Fatuga’s post highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that unspecified individuals were feared trapped, as the building was believed to be frequented by artisans and other site workers before it collapsed.

Five Rescued Alive, Rescue Operations Underway

As of the time of this report, five individuals have been rescued alive from the debris. Emergency response teams are currently on the scene, working tirelessly to locate and rescue more possible victims trapped under the collapsed structure.

Efforts are being led by local emergency services, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in collaboration with security and medical teams.

The exact number of people still trapped remains unknown, as authorities continue to assess the extent of the damage and possible casualties.

Cause of Collapse Yet to Be Determined

While the immediate cause of the collapse is yet to be officially disclosed, questions are being raised regarding the structural integrity of the building and whether construction protocols were properly followed.

Building collapses are a recurring issue in Lagos, often attributed to poor construction practices, use of substandard materials, and lack of regulatory oversight.

Residents in Shock as Authorities Warn Against Approaching Scene

Residents of Ota-Ona and nearby areas have expressed shock and fear, with many gathering around the site as news spread quickly. Authorities have urged the public to avoid crowding the scene to allow rescue operations to proceed unhindered.

Urgent Calls for Stricter Building Regulations

This incident adds to the growing list of building collapses in Lagos, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building codes and more rigorous supervision of construction projects, especially those in densely populated areas like Ikorodu.

As rescue efforts continue, families and loved ones of those possibly affected await news, hoping for more survivors to be pulled out safely.

That's someone millions gone because of another person greed.

Developers if you want to charge your client millions please do and don't temper with their project money.

The developer should be arrested and made to pay for the building

This is truly heartbreaking news. My deepest sympathies go out to the victims, their families, and the entire Ota-Ona community. It’s devastating to see yet another preventable tragedy due to a building collapse in Lagos. While the swift emergency response and the rescue of five individuals are commendable, this incident underscores systemic issues that demand urgent attention.

The recurrence of such disasters—often linked to substandard materials, lax regulations, and corruption in construction oversight—is inexcusable. Stricter enforcement of building codes, routine inspections, and harsh penalties for non-compliance are critical. Developers and contractors who cut corners must be held accountable, and communities need safer urban planning, especially in densely populated areas like Ikorodu.

Public awareness is also key. Residents should feel empowered to report unsafe constructions, and authorities must prioritize transparency in investigations. Crowding the scene, as mentioned, hampers rescue efforts, so it’s vital for bystanders to heed official guidance during crises.

Let’s hope more survivors are found swiftly and that this tragedy galvanizes real change. Lagos cannot afford to normalize these collapses. Thank you for sharing this update—it’s a sobering reminder of the work needed to protect lives and ensure such disasters become a thing of the past. 🙏🏽🛠️ #BuildingSafetyNow

Pls stop calling Engineers in this matter. No Engineer that has spent 5 years studying engineering, spend more years furthering, practicing before being registered by COREN will cut corners especially with this much scrutiny going on in Lagos State. Also, an Engineer is somebody who is registered by government to practice Engineering. Anyone not registered is not an Engineer. Those people you clients employ are bricklayers and Masons. You call them engineer and murder our profession and when a building collapses, you start to shout engineer. Pls, be guided.

True, we will charge you money but you will get your money's worth and you can sue for damages, report to professional bodies if anything like this arises. But if you want to continue with those bricklayers, good luck. I know some low IQ people will say those bricklayers are better... Continue. But please don't call them 'engineer'. Call them Bricklayers, Formen, Masons. We need them in our profession because they are good, but they are good under the supervision of an Engineer.

Greed, lawlessness, and incompetence. Total disregard for human lives and for what? Hopefully, no one is injured. Else the govt should arrest the owner and site engineer.
