Excessive Fuel Consumption - Mazda Cx9 2009- 3.7 Finish Full Tank Fin In A Day. by waslag(op): 5:30am On May 28, 2025
Hi everyone- please help find solution to my fuel gushing car. It finishes full tank less than a day without travelling out the city. Apparently, catalytic is ok, the injector is ok and radiator has been changed but the issue is not solved. I can see alot of Mazda cx9 2009 around ibadan and I don't think their vehicles consuming fuel like mine otherwise their won't be alot of this vehicles around.

I have tried alot of mechanic, but the issue is not solved. Is any using the same vehicle and had similar experience?.

Any recommendations for mechanic in IBADAN?

Chat GPT generated response below:

Your concern is completely valid—finishing a full tank of fuel in less than a day without traveling out of the city is definitely abnormal, especially for a Mazda CX-9. Even though it’s a V6 engine and naturally consumes more fuel than a 4-cylinder, it should not be that extreme.

Here’s a structured way to troubleshoot this issue further, based on what you've already checked:

---

✅ Things You've Already Done:

Catalytic converter checked – OK

Injector checked – OK

Radiator changed – done (though not directly related to fuel consumption)

---

🔍 Key Areas to Check Next

1. Oxygen Sensors (O2 Sensors)

If your upstream O2 sensors are faulty, they can feed incorrect data to the ECU, causing it to run the engine too rich (too much fuel).

Ask a mechanic to run a live scan with OBD2 to see the real-time O2 sensor readings.

2. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

A dirty or bad MAF sensor sends incorrect air intake readings, leading to poor fuel-air mixture and high fuel consumption.

Try cleaning it with a dedicated MAF sensor cleaner or have it replaced if faulty.

3. Fuel Pressure Regulator or Fuel Return Line

A faulty regulator can lead to too much pressure in the fuel rail, forcing excess fuel into the engine.

Make sure there are no leaks in the return line.

4. EVAP System Issues (Fuel Vapor Leak)

A leaking EVAP system can cause a strong fuel smell and reduce fuel efficiency.

Ask your mechanic for a smoke test to detect vapor leaks.

5. ECU Issues or Wrong ECU Remapping

Has the ECU ever been reprogrammed or replaced? Incorrect software settings can cause high fuel injection rates.

A reset and re-flash of the ECU using Mazda factory software might be necessary.

6. Driving Habits or Hidden Idling

Is the car often idling for long periods (e.g., parked with AC running)?

Also consider if a faulty coolant temperature sensor is making the ECU think the engine is cold all the time.

---

🔧 Mechanical Possibilities

Stuck open thermostat: Engine not reaching optimal temperature, making the ECU run rich constantly.

Exhaust leaks before O2 sensor: Can mess with readings and lead to over-fueling.

---

🧪 Simple Test You Can Do:

After a drive, smell the exhaust. If it smells like raw fuel, it's running rich.

Have someone stand behind while you gently rev — excessive black smoke = rich mixture.

---

🧑‍🔧 Recommendations:

Since you’re in Ibadan, try to find:

A Mazda-specific or Ford-trained mechanic (CX-9 shares DNA with Ford).

A diagnostic center with Techstream, IDS, or equivalent scan tool for deep-level diagnosis.

Scan the car with a good scanner and post the code.
