Barely two months after the Ogun State Government sealed a factory, Quantum Steel Industry, in the Ogijo area of the state following an explosion that left seven employees critically injured, another employee has lost his life in an industrial accident.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Tuesday that the incident occurred last Monday when the employee, identified as Abayomi, a forklift operator, got stuck in the scrap grinding machine.

A casual worker at the factory, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, disclosed that the machine operator had instructed Abayomi to remove a scrap that was stuck in it without knowing that the machine was still powered.

The worker added that immediately after Abayomi removed the scrap, the machine began working and rolled him like a scrap.

He added that other workers at the scene of the incident rushed to rescue him, but he was brought out dead.

The worker said, “A fellow worker at Quantum Steel Industry was killed by a scrap grinding machine last Monday. He was instructed by the scrap machine operator, who is a foreign national, to enter the machine and remove a scrap that was stuck in it.

“Unfortunately, he did not know that the operator had not switched it off. As soon as he removed the stuck scrap, the machine picked up and rolled him.

“Other workers at the factory tried to rescue him, but when he was brought out, he was already dead.”

When contacted for a reaction on Tuesday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, did not respond to messages sent to her line as of the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, a police officer in the area who was privy to the incident but not permitted to speak with the press confirmed the incident to our correspondent in a telephone conversation on Tuesday.

“Yes, it happened,” the police source said.

Efforts to get the reaction of Quantum Steel Industry proved abortive as the respondent of the contact available on its website disclosed that he was not in a position to speak with the press.

PUNCH Metro reported on March 7 that the Ogun State Government sealed Quantum Steel Industry in Ogijo, Sagamu Local Government and Xinfeng Plastics Limited along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following two industrial accidents that occurred at the factories.

This followed industrial accidents that left one person dead and seven others with severe injuries.

The Special Adviser to Ogun Governor on Environmental Protection Agency, who doubles as the Chairman of the State Taskforce on Environmental Compliance and Enforcement, Farook Akintunde, noted that the government decided to shut down the companies to avert future occurrences.

Carelessness coming from the scrap operator. No how the forklift operator would've known the scrap machine wasn't turned off. Probably he got on top of the basin to pull out the scrap that stopped the machine. And again scrap machines have incredible horsepower. A scrap such machines can't grind, can't also be pulled out by one man. Maybe the machine needed to be repaired/replaced or something or maybe it's a medium low-powered scrap machine. Mehn! Probably an Asian company.Too bad. No SAFETY training before employment.

Is it a Chinese company? Na dem get this kind wicked mind. If I was president, all these Chinese companies will be on their toes!

The machine operator who sent the poor man in is complicit. He should be charged to court and let the law handle him. After serving he should be deported.

Also the company should be fined heavily after certifying that they meet all safety requirements for future operations.
Lastly, the dead man's family should be compensated and his children placed on scholarship.

R.I.P to the dead...may God give his family fortitude to bear the loss. What a painful way to die... Too bad... And I am very sure he was a 5 digits salary earner oo... No one deserves to die but some of these hazardous workers are being paid lesser than their jobs entailed... No life insurance, no preventive measures for safety...his family loss!!!

However unfortunate, this accident happens wherever there is manufacturing.
We shouldn’t shut down factories because someone died. Over 40,000 people died in china last year alone due to manufacturing accidents. Similar happens in Germany, USA etc
We should enforce safety laws, and ensure compensation to families of victims.

The wickedness of man. That you are paying somebody money doesn't mean that the person owes you his/her life cos the money is in exchange for value anyways.

After being made to serve jail time. That's an intentional act. How would you ask someone to go in when you are yet to shut down the machine knowing that once the obstruction is removed the machine will continue grinding?

The company or the machine operator has to pay for the damages to the family of the worker..

Some got killed out of negligence by the company and everyone is playing secrecy and keeping mute? The family should sue that company for compensation in millions.
Even the police who are supposed to bring this to light and issue arrests are refusing to talk? Someone just lost their life for goodness sake!!! The Nigerian police is just utter rubbish!!

the government should read a riot act in these factories. Ogun has become a hot bed for factory workers abuse and something must be done fast or else it will be the new Delhi or the new Wuhan factory hell in the world
