2027 Presidency: South West Should Produce All Presidential Candidates, South East in 2031 – Lamido

The leader of Arewa Summit International, Dr. Bashir Lamido, has called for the South West to produce all presidential candidates for the 2027 elections, while advocating that the South East should take the same opportunity in 2031.

Speaking during a high-level political dialogue on zoning and national cohesion held in Abuja on Friday , Dr. Lamido emphasised that this rotational approach would promote unity, fairness, and long-term political stability across Nigeria.

“For the sake of equity, national integration, and the stability of our democracy, we believe the South West should present all presidential candidates in 2027. Then, come 2031, the South East – which has long awaited its turn – should be given the full platform to produce the next president,” Lamido stated.

Arewa Summit International, under Dr. Lamido’s leadership, has become a leading northern-based political think tank known for its pan-Nigerian vision and commitment to bridging regional divides.

He further stressed that the proposal is not about excluding any group, but rather about setting a national precedent for justice and inclusion.

“This is not just about politics. It’s about healing, trust-building, and showing every Nigerian that they belong to the same nation. People may ask, what about the north? It should be the turn of the north in 2031. They forget that the North has spent more years leading the country than any other region.

“It is just right to balance the leadership across the regions. We are only hoping that in 2031, the South East should be extended same national compliments as we are hopeful to do for South West in 2027.” he said.

This is not a bad idea. We have to consider our unique circumstances and incorporate it into our political system in order to forster a sense of unity and inclusiveness.

With all due respect, Dr.Bashir Lamido is proposing what the North will never ever accept. I.e to be out of power for potentially another 14 years from today.

To them. they feel 'relegated' whenever they are not controlling Aso Rock.

The solution is to stop flogging this dead Horse called "national unity" and "one Nigeria". Put the poor Horse out of it's misery and let it die in peace.

Real , progressive and developmental national unity will come from autonomy for every region rather than the "winner take all' excercise in self-deception and futility our Presidential arrangement is and will remain forever.

And Atiku will still come out as a candidate also?

The North will grab power in 2031 with our support. The SE/SS should wait till 2039.

Exactly my point. I don’t subscribe to this turn-by-turn presidency, I think the best candidate should win fair and square.
Let’s assume Nigeria is like a terribly sick patient on life support, does it need the most effective treatment or turn-by-turn treatment, regardless of the competence of the physicians.
In 1993, Moshood Abiola defeated Bashir Tofa, a northerner, without zoning. In 2023, Bola Ahmed Tinubu defeated Atiku, a northerner, without zoning.
In 2008, Barack Obama, a black man, defeated John McCain, a white man, without zoning.
I think what we need now is the best around, to enhance socio-economic development, peace, progress and prosperity, not a chop-I-chop arrangement.

If in 2031, Northerners decide to leave power for the South again, we Yorubas will make sure it is the South South that gets it, not the South East, and if the South South seems to be unprepared, we the Yorubas will snatch it and run away with it again

Why did south west contest knowing fully Obasanjo had 8 years?
The mindset of 'chancing others' as we say it in the street is the main causes of crisis in our higher institutions, society and the country at large.
