The Kano State Government has announced a financial assistance package of ₦1 million for each family of the 22 young athletes who lost their lives in a tragic road accident while returning from the 2025 National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, News360 Nigeria reports.

Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo made the announcement on Saturday during a condolence visit to the Nasarawa Hospital in Kano, where the remains of the deceased athletes were deposited.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo described the incident as a painful loss not only for Kano State but for the nation as a whole.

“It is a very sad day for us in Kano and the entire country. These young men were returning from a national assignment, having proudly represented Kano. Some were even coming back with gold medals. Sadly, their lives were cut short so close to home,” Gwarzo said.

The ill-fated athletes were part of Kano’s contingent to the prestigious National Sports Festival, an event designed to promote peace, unity, and youth empowerment through sports. In addition to the financial support, the state government also pledged to provide food items and relief materials to help ease the burden on the affected families.

According to Gwarzo, 20 of the victims have so far been identified at the hospital, while two others were taken home for burial by their families.

He added that Governor Yusuf had directed the state to fully stand by the bereaved families and ensure the injured receive prompt and quality medical care.

The Deputy Governor also visited the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where seven injured athletes are currently being treated.

He sympathized with the survivors, assuring them of the government’s unwavering commitment to their recovery and welfare.

“On behalf of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the people of Kano State, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. May Allah forgive their shortcomings and grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” Gwarzo prayed.

As families prepared for burial rites, the state government reaffirmed its promise to provide long-term support for those affected, pledging to stand by them through the difficult journey of healing and recovery.

Same N22m could have sorted their travelling with comfort by flying into Kano.

Why not give the families a good financial support so they are comforted by the hustle of their lost son? N10 - N20m each would have been more reasonable.

It’s deeply troubling that funds intended for safe air travel to Kano have instead been diverted as compensation to families of the deceased. This misguided prioritization reflects a concerning disregard for proactive safety measures.

A state as rich as Kano could not afford air tickets for it's athletes. Smh..

If this had happened during the period of electioneering campaigns, Atiku, Tinubu and Obi would be competing with mourning of these lost souls. Each of them would support the family of the accident victims with humongous amount. But it happened when it did and our caring politicians and only dropping their consoling letters.

What can N22m do for the families? Same money should have been used to board flight back to kano but politicians and their no regards for the lives of masses is heart breaking.

And they told you Airplanes never faces accident also? Forget if death want to strike it'll regardless,In Turkey Similar incidence happened during the Earthquake of 2022 I guess.There are this young Volleyball Athletes from Cyprus that went to play,they travel by plane,settle in a hotel and still when it's time the Quake caught up with them.

Government would prefer to send citizens to Mecca and Jerusalem for pilgrimage all expense paid for a spiritual journey that is personal. Budgeting as much as 3m naira per pilgrim but cannot afford to fly a contingent that went on a state glory seeking assignment for less than 1m naira per person.

Instead they'd pay millions to the bereaved of the latter whose deaths were really avoidable had the right thing been done.

May the travesty of Nigeria not happen to us.
