At the moment,maize is cheaper than even pure water. They sell 12 pieces at just #1000. If you start encouraging people into this,then the supply will even get worst and price drops further.

We that we even planted March this year,we have not yet break-even how much more seeing profit not those who will harvest afterwards. Thank God for the cassava planted in between,this will neutralize any loss.

The op is new in this line of business reason his hope is high. He should take heed and plant cassava or perhaps,if he will sell the maize dry by March next year.

**Maize population plays an important role in the yield. This is why it is crucial to plant the right quantity of seeds and not just quality.



In my case, i planted three seeds per hole and aimed to cultivate between 11,000 and 12,000 seeds. This gives room for mortality of 5-15%. If 5-15% of the seeds do not grow, it means I end up getting 10,000 successfully grown plants per acre.


For my six acreage area, i had 72,000 seeds cultivated.




***Let's do a quick maths.

If u have let's say 10,000 stands of maize on your farm, and a maize cob weigh 350g after good Agronomic practice. After shelling it can reduce to 250g.

*If u convert to kg, u have 0.25kg.

*Multiply by 10,000 stands..... 2500kg - 2.5 Tons per acre area


*100kg makes a bag... So u can get 25 bags of 100kg

First :



The first step in setting up a farm is to inspect the land, examine that it can be worked upon by a tractor because not all lands can be ploughed with a tractor because often times, lands can contain rocks, tree stumps that makes them unsuitable for tractor to operate on them.


You need to make sure of the suitability of your land. Once this is confirmed, you may go ahead and make payment. In my case, I paid 15,000 Naira per acre. My six acres cost me 90,000 Naira altogether

How much is the price to buy 1 acre in Abeokuta? I'll like to buy like 10 acres.

A 10 days without rain can have negative effects on yielding results. I will rather do an acre with irrigation than 6 acres withiout it.

Ignorant is a disease, why am I even replying you when you probably know nothing about crops farming.

I have seen a whole hectare of maize farm being render almost unproductive as a result of prolong lack of rain during rainy season. To achive greater success in farming, it is better to be in total control of your fate than solely relies on nature that is subject to sudden change or uncertainty.

You will make much more profit if you used the money meant for 6 acres to irrigate just 2 acres with peace of mind. You can easily intercrop in irrigation land and still harvest bountifully well.

Yes, rain do stop temporarily during rain season too. I am not trying to discourage him or anyone, i just pointed out some precautions to him, so that he can invest smartly next time. I have been there before, and I know how painful it is to cultivate large area of land without good yield.

I wish this man a great success, and I believe nothing will happen to his farm by special grace of God.

Weed control is everything in Maize cultivation. Weeds can eat up to 40% pf crop yield if they are not well managed in the first 8 weeks of crop growth. To ensure a weed-free farm, i utilized a combination of Lagon and Glyphosate. Lagon to seal weeds seed and inhibit weed seeds growth for weeks while Glyphosate in the herbicides mixture kills weeds that escaped tractorization.




***I personally supervised my labourers herbicides application to avoid application mistakes that may lead to weed emergence along the way. In my style of herbicides application, i always mix a fixed ratio of liquid and inform them they must continue to spray until the liquid is finished. This way there is no excuse of them just walking across the farms and not doing the actual work.

OP mentioned that his goal was 10,000 cobs of corn by harvest and a rough calculation of the required overhead plus some wiggle-room worked out to about 150,000 Naira, maximum. With your 12 cobs for 1k, the total price for the whole lot is about 800K, that means about 650k over maybe a month or two of corn cultivation. Pretty good returns if you ask me, but then again, I'm not a farmer so I could very well be wrong.

Thanks. I have standby buyers for my dried maize grains. I know the qty of seeds i planted and the estimated financial inflow. Hence, i am not worried. As an educated farmer, i go with my figures from blueprint to the field. I am not selling fresh, nor worried about price fluctuations

Maize farming is 3 months. Cost of buying the seeds,cost of 6 acres(15k*6),cost of fertilizers,cost of workers,cost of insecticides etc

There is sun and there will always be in some days interval. Not everyday rain falls.
