Why do African billionaires, especially Nigerian billionaires, prefer to amass wealth and die without committing to charity, unlike their American counterparts?

Warren Buffett

Net Worth: ~$130 billion (as of 2025)

Commitment: Pledged to give away more than 99% of his wealth.

Status: Actively donating through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and his own family foundations.

Quote: "I couldn’t be happier with that decision."

Bill Gates

Net Worth: ~$120 billion

Commitment: Pledged to donate the vast majority of his wealth.

Focus: Global health, education, and climate change via the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Melinda French Gates

Net Worth: ~$11 billion (personal post-divorce)

Commitment: Pledged to give away most of her wealth.

Focus: Gender equity, reproductive health, education, and women’s empowerment.

MacKenzie Scott

Net Worth: ~$34 billion

Commitment: Has already donated over $17 billion since 2019.

Style: Donates without conditions, often to smaller and underserved organizations.

Quote: "I have a disproportionate amount of money to share."

Mark Zuckerberg & Priscilla Chan

Net Worth: ~$110 billion

Commitment: Pledged 99% of their Facebook shares through the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI).

Focus: Science, education, criminal justice reform, and housing.

Elon Musk

Net Worth: ~$200+ billion (fluctuates)

Commitment: Signed the Giving Pledge.

Reality: His actual donations have drawn criticism for being less than expected relative to his wealth.

Michael Bloomberg

Net Worth: ~$96 billion

Commitment: Donated over $14 billion to causes including public health, education, and climate change.

Foundation: Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Ray Dalio

Net Worth: ~$15 billion

Commitment: Signed the Giving Pledge.

Focus: Ocean exploration, mental health, economic inequality.

Reed Hastings (Netflix co-founder)

Net Worth: ~$4 billion

Commitment: Signed the Giving Pledge.

Focus: Education reform and equity.

Lyda Hill

Net Worth: ~$2 billion

Commitment: Signed the Giving Pledge.

Notable Quote: "Science is the answer to so many of the issues we face"

So na greed, selfishness and wickedness be our culture, abi? I reject that. I want to be kind, compassionate and selfless. I want to put smiles on the faces of the less privileged. That will make me happy and fulfilled.

Good when you have your money do whatever you want with it.

Poor people have the collective attitude of educating rich folks on how to spend their money.

Who told you Nigerian Billionaires don't spend alot on charity, abi e never reach your side na why you dey cry.

You better go and work instead of focusing on teaching billionaires what to do with their money.
If you were so wise, you would have been among the billionaires, you won't be on the sidelines.

They say, person wer dey drive motor with mouth no dey get accident.

I can see you truly have the spirit of a kid from the way you talk.
