‘An Innocent Mistake,’ Family Defends Nigerian Grandmother Sacked By UK Varsity by Darlingtina16(op): 1:37am On Jun 07, 2025
The family of Janet Damiro, a 71-year-old cleaner recently dismissed from the London School of Economics, has responded to widespread reports surrounding the incident, describing the online and media narratives as misleading and lacking critical context.

The victim’s daughter, Aina Damiro, in a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Friday, clarified the events that led to her mother’s dismissal, stating that the situation has been “blown out of proportion.”

According to her, the incident occurred in February during the final minutes of Janet’s morning shift when she found a bracelet on the floor.

She reportedly picked it up with the intention of handing it in but inadvertently forgot.

She said that the bracelet was left untouched in her coin wallet, which remained in her locker at the university.

“When approached about the bracelet a few days later, she was honest and cooperative.

“She retrieved it immediately and explained what had happened. There was no denial or attempt to hide it,” she said.

The family insists this was a case of forgetfulness rather than theft or misconduct, stressing that Janet had served the institution faithfully for years.

They argued that the university’s decision to terminate her employment was a disproportionate response lacking empathy, especially for an older worker nearing retirement.

The family said, “To see her name and image used to suggest wrongdoing is not only unfair but deeply hurtful.

“This was an innocent mistake that has been misrepresented in a way that raises questions about how older workers, particularly women of colour in lower-paid roles, are treated.”

The family stated that Janet granted the interview to the Metro UK in good faith, hoping to raise awareness, not to be vilified.

“We hope the public and media will reconsider how they are framing this story,” the family added, urging institutions to reflect on their duty to support vulnerable and long-serving members of staff.

The London School of Economics has not issued a formal response as of press time.

The case has since sparked conversation online under hashtags such as #JusticeForJanet and #RespectElderWorkers.

It's not about messed up society, but their rules and regulations of the working environment, yes very possible that she forgot, however the rules may just be against such forgetfulness. That's white people for you, i understand them through experience.

What the woman should have done is immediately she found it, would have informed appropriate authorities, that's the procedure, but in her case she forgot.

Again, the way things are done in Nigeria is not the same with them and you can't force your way of doing things on them, from my experience with them, they don't trust us at all no matter what you do, so looking at this case, they don't see it as we do, moreover, the organization is not a family business, so the reality has to be faced as looking at the number of days the item was with her may not be justifiable.

Like they say, ignorance of the law excuses nobody smiley

It's just unfortunate, i hope her case is reviewed in her favor as age and pressure would have contributed to her forgetfulness.

Saying she forgot is not true and very deceitful.

So she was approached about the missing bracelet before bringing it out, that's very suspicious. If she had brought it forward before being asked, it would have helped her case a bit.

Ok.
Let her retire.
She has tried for oyinbo.
Working since 1974.
Maybe na India people there do her tribalism.
Let her retire with her head held hire.
Re: ‘An Innocent Mistake,’ Family Defends Nigerian Grandmother Sacked By UK Varsity by TheChameleon:
Working for Whites for this long... is already shameful

She made a fatal mistake that cost her big - disgrace, sack and she might even be made to forfeit her pension with them (who knows the regulations regarding termination for misconduct)

She will regret answering the whispers of Satan. Likely a bracelet she could afford, gambled on not being caught and lost it all.

It is hard but thinking about consequences of being caught often discourages one from committing crimes

Whether it was her 1st or 100th theft, nothing matters now that she was caught. Sad.

Re: ‘An Innocent Mistake,’ Family Defends Nigerian Grandmother Sacked By UK Varsity by Kobicove(m):
The issue here is that the school has been planning to dispense with her services but they needed an excuse to do it cos if they sacked her outrightly without cause she could bring a legal action against them for wrongful termination.

I don't even understand why a woman who has been in the UK for over 40 years is still working as a cleaner?! huh

It is very possible she forgot, elderly people tend to be forgetful especially if they're not doing jobs which are mentally tasking that keeps their brain busy

Nothing like forgetfulness here. If she tried it at the airport as an aircraft cleaner she would also be sacked. They found it in her possession.

Very difficult to prove a case of forgetfulness here. As I earlier said on this issue, if she had brought forward the bracelet days after picking it up, hers would be a case of forgetfulness. But to be supposedly shown evidence that she picked it and said she forgot would be extremely difficult to prove. As a black person living in western society, the odds are already stacked against you. You are constantly on a race to prove your worth and integrity, which the locals are not.
