**Maize population plays an important role in the yield. This is why it is crucial to plant the right quantity of seeds and not just quality.

In my case, i planted three seeds per hole and aimed to cultivate between 11,000 and 12,000 seeds. This gives room for mortality of 5-15%. If 5-15% of the seeds do not grow, it means I end up getting 10,000 successfully grown plants per acre.

For my six acreage area, i had 72,000 seeds cultivated.

***Let's do a quick maths.

If u have let's say 10,000 stands of maize on your farm, and a maize cob weigh 350g after good Agronomic practice. After shelling it can reduce to 250g.

*If u convert to kg, u have 0.25kg.

*Multiply by 10,000 stands..... 2500kg - 2.5 Tons per acre area

*100kg makes a bag... So u can get 25 bags of 100kg

****Agriculture is very hard to start, but if you start the right way you will become UNSTOPPABLE***

Stop procrastinating and kick start your agricultural projects today !
I have looked for such farmlands around me. Here one plot u will here 50,000

Just being curious, I'm a 400L student of agriculture following this thread and I will like to learn from you sir. What kind of irrigation works for open field like the one the OP has?
Virtually all irrigation system are good for open field but there are some that are less expensive, like Furrow or Drip. Sprinkler is good too but expensive to installed or manage.

Weed control is everything in Maize cultivation. Weeds can eat up to 40% pf crop yield if they are not well managed in the first 8 weeks of crop growth. To ensure a weed-free farm, i utilized a combination of Lagon and Glyphosate. Lagon to seal weeds seed and inhibit weed seeds growth for weeks while Glyphosate in the herbicides mixture kills weeds that escaped tractorization.

Great job. Pls how can I get this chemicals?

***I personally supervised my labourers herbicides application to avoid application mistakes that may lead to weed emergence along the way. In my style of herbicides application, i always mix a fixed ratio of liquid and inform them they must continue to spray until the liquid is finished. This way there is no excuse of them just walking across the farms and not doing the actual work.

Think smart farmers !

Follow me on this journey as I am to inspire youths to take up not just agriculture but anything productive and run with it.

First :

The first step in setting up a farm is to inspect the land, examine that it can be worked upon by a tractor because not all lands can be ploughed with a tractor because often times, lands can contain rocks, tree stumps that makes them unsuitable for tractor to operate on them.

You need to make sure of the suitability of your land. Once this is confirmed, you may go ahead and make payment. In my case, I paid 15,000 Naira per acre. My six acres cost me 90,000 Naira altogether
Thanks God APC herders has not located it

One thing I always do is take good look at the soil in any lands i want to rent. Some times, soil tests is preferred. This is because some soils have become too weak for agro production.

Always make sure by examining the land before you pay. You can also take a look at crops cultivated around your intended farm to get clues about the soil health
Sorry, I just wanted to clarify. You rented the land and not buying it outrightly ?

I will use that funds to farm ten acres amd make ten times what the produce on pwned land would give me. I checked the maths before taking off. Why do i need to buy land when i have access to over 500 acres leasable lands ?

I understand your point. Is the rent for a year or how many years?

Also,I hope a formal agreement was signed ?

Yearly rentals. No need for agreements. Even renting new spaces within two weeks

Amen, Amen, Amen. Leaving the city for years to develop deep in the hinterlands and still growing is not an easy feat. I miss Lekki/Ajah, Eti Osa, but what do i do ?

Yes we all know by looking at the land. But the lands in Ogbomoso in Oyo state completely ruined this sensing for me. I rented 50 acres, low and behold it was good. But when it was season for farming, the land became rain water meet rain water. I embarked on 20 acres, i didnt take out 50 Naira from that project. I left in tears and tatters

Did you plant local beans seeds or hybrid seeds ? I am trying to buy hybrid beans seeds but all the stores around are telling me they do not have in stock.

*improving productivity is a major driver as far as attaining food securty in Nigeria is concerned. To achieve improvement in maize productivity two tenets are important.

(1) Always make use of the right seed variety. The right seed variety because of climate change is drought resistance seeds.

(2) Always adhere to good Agronomic practices.

** The purpose of this research is to check the yield potential of Seedco SC649
