Igbos Declare "Code 555" in Protest Against Tinubu's Government

Despite Nigeria's constitutional provision for equitable representation, the Southeast, with its five states, has been allocated only five ministerial positions. In contrast, other regions such as the Southwest have received up to ten ministerial slots.


Notably, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite from Imo State was demoted from her position as the Senior Minister of Trade and Industry to a Junior Minister of Finance. This move has been perceived as a deliberate downgrading of Igbo representation in the federal cabinet.


Critics argue that the current administration continues the legacy of previous governments in sidelining the Igbos. For instance, during former President Muhammadu Buhari's tenure, the Southeast was excluded from key appointments, including the Board of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, despite being home to oil-producing states.


The appointment of ministers has been criticized for lacking inclusivity, with some regions receiving multiple ministers while the Southeast remains underrepresented. This imbalance has raised concerns about the adherence to the Federal Character Principle, which mandates fair representation of all regions in federal appointments.


In light of these grievances, the Igbo community, through organizations like Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called for the immediate removal of President Tinubu. They argue that the current administration's policies foster division and threaten the unity of the nation.


The "Code 555" movement underscores the Igbo community's demand for equitable representation and fair treatment within Nigeria's political framework. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the federal government will address these concerns to ensure national cohesion and inclusivity.
