So she was approached about the missing bracelet before bringing it out, that's very suspicious. If she had brought it forward before being asked, it would have helped her case a bit.
For someone they claimed had worked for that length of time without any negative report, there is nothing suspicious about it. She has a track record of honesty. Secondly, if she picked it on the floor and didn't go into anybody wallet or locker to collect it, she hasn't stolen anything.

When cctv cameras dey everywhere her forgetfulness became alert to sharpness when posed if she saw the item.
If we can adopt this approach in Nigeria everybody go wake up

The reason she didn't bring it forward before being asked is because she simply forgot and it was left in her locker at work not taken home. Everyone forgets things in their pocket/purse every time.
It's only suspicious if she had initially denied seeing any bracelet and then claimed she forgot she saw it to defend herself, but not the case, she didn't deny but handed it over when asked.
She shouldn't have left any room for forgetfulness, she should have simply handed the bracelet to the security who were running night shift like she was. Why keep it in a bag and leave it there till she was approached with evidence that she took it? There's no way a defense attorney can prove her innocence in a court of law regardless the colour of her skin

The way some of you talk, may what you say never happen to you or your children. I guess you didn't read the part where she said the bracelet was left in her coin wallet untouched and in her locker at the University for days. Do you know what being a 71 year old doing cleaning means? I guess not. But once you have access to data and a smart phone you feel you are entitled to talk anyhow.

The varsity is kind to her based on her age & past history. If not issues of thefts goes with dismissal & pressing of charges. Some mumu people are here talking about racism, are some people so dumb. No wonder Nigeria nor dey beta, the population of stupid people outweighs the sensible ones

You returned it on your own abi. Taking a work related gadget home mistakenly is quite different from picking another person's item from the floor.

I once forgot body worn camera after shift.I discovered it after leaving the premises.I went back immediately I discovered it but they already closed all the doors. Then, I decided to go and return it the following day.
They reported it to the office and I explained. I returned it the following day and that was the end.
Some evil minded people would have reacted to it differently.

One day you'll misplace something very valuable to you and somebody will find it and forget it in their wallet. So that you'll this day of making excuse for an ill thought behavior

This situation is deeply unfortunate and highlights a broader issue around fairness and empathy in the workplace. Janet Damiro made an honest mistake, not a malicious act. After years of dedicated service, dismissing her over a forgotten bracelet seems harsh and lacking in compassion especially for an elderly worker nearing retirement. The narrative being spun online ignores the context and humanity of the situation. It’s crucial we advocate for fair treatment, especially for vulnerable workers who have given so much with so little recognition

They might have been suspecting her of pilfering things and so they set the trap for her with the bracelet. She fell for their trap.

You found it outside premises, tried to return it immediately; and you are comparing it to someone that found something right within the premises and didn't bother to return it? Una mind no go touch ground.

I think they have been suspecting her for a while and set this trap for her. A cleaner can't put lost but found items in her purse. She has access to the desk where such items are returned. They probably noticed that little things like jewelry that are forgotten on desks etc vanish the next day when they come to retrieve them. Hence they carefully monitored her. And yes, she can't deny it cos she probably was caught on camera puting it in her purse he će denying wouldn't have made sense.

l feel for her though, again, she is a cleaner at the age of 71 , nawao sad
/

She is better off a cleaner at 71 in UK than a stay-at-home retiree. Boredom and depression from loneliness would have killed her. She is out there interacting with people which is good for her emotional and psychological well-being.

Very unfortunate indeed, but at 71 she should be retired, and back home in Nigeria enjoying her last few years.

I hear what you are saying, and I understand that you’re upset and you have every right to feel that way. But I just want to clarify that it was never my intention to be careless or disrespectful, and definitely not to make excuses for anything that seemed wrong. sometimes we all fall short, not because we don’t care, but because we misjudge a moment or act without thinking things all the way through. If my actions came across as ill thought or insensitive, then I sincerely apologize that was never what I meant. I truly value what’s important, and I would never knowingly take something lightly if it mattered to someone else. I hope, with time, you can understand where I’m coming from too

It is highly possible for her to have forgotten due to her age .
I was with my inlaw few hrs ago ,after I left he was called and they asked about me, he told them he never saw me.
There are honest and genuine mistakes with old people.
Moreover, they should review her past records at least to get more clues about her behaviour in the institution.

The story may be true as the woman really forgot the bracelets in the coin wallet which was in the locker. Assuming that that she wanted to steal it as it is being claimed by the school, she would have taken it home. The school should temper justice with mercy.

correctyourself:
It's not about messed up society, but their rules and regulations of the working environment, yes very possible that she forgot, however the rules may just be against such forgetfulness. That's white people for you, i understand them through experience.

What the woman should have done is immediately she found it, would have informed appropriate authorities, that's the procedure, but in her case she forgot.

Again, the way things are done in Nigeria is not the same with them and you can't force your way of doing things on them, from my experience with them, they don't trust us at all no matter what you do, so looking at this case, they don't see it as we do, moreover, the organization is not a family business, so the reality has to be faced as looking at the number of days the item was with her may not be justifiable.

Like they say, ignorance of the law excuses nobody smiley

It's just unfortunate, i hope her case is reviewed in her favor as age and pressure would have contributed to her forgetfulness.
This is a stark reminder that in the land of these people, it pays to mind your business.!!
