Yes, the non teaching staff do their normal work from 8am to 4pm and go home. But the academic staff who are usually fewer especially in new generation universities due to strict policy of employment are usually overworked. My experience with them is that they work round the
clock.
They are all needed to make the university run, if you are overworked above your pay grade, complain or reduce the work load.

Exactly

He probably doesn't know the role non academics are playing in the universities

After completing your master's or PhD, who will move your result from your department to PG school?

Even the undergraduates, who are the staff in Exams unit who calculates the CGPA and presents the students that will graduate for each session?

Who are the staff in Careers unit who prepares the list of students for NYSC?

Who are the security staff of the university?

Who are the staff in admissions that registers newly admitted students?

Who are the staff of the hospitals in the universities?

Who are the technical staff of the universities that maintain services like electricity, carpentry, general repairs?

Who are the cleaners and messengers in the various departments in the universities?

Who are the ICT staff of the universities?

Who are the staff in Bursary Unit?

All these roles and many more are the roles performed by the non academics

Even the VC's office and the registrar's office are run by the non academics, just to tell you the extent of the influence and importance of the non academic staff in the smooth day to day running of the various departments in the universities
In 2018, I was at ABU, Zaria.
Non Academic Staffs were on strike, the main entrance to the Senate building was locked, only the side was open and for you to gain entrance, you must be someone who has a calibre, you can't just walk in, it was like the school was on holidays meanwhile classes were holding, students were battling with water availability, electricity and all what nots.
They are all important to make the university function properly.

Exactly my point!

In truth ASSU have at least 60% population of staff workers in public universities
They are so few in number that when shared.... many of them will still collect far more than the amount ASUU members get.... despite the 20% share they are to collect... and by the way.... the allowance is called earned academic allowance...concept of it was drawn up by ASUU..... how things got so bad that non-academics now see it as something to also poke into...despite that they get a standard monthly hazard allowance that ASUU members do not get ....will remain mind-boggling...but I dont blame them... I blame Ngige and his divisive theatrics that elevated them and the other yeye union during BUhari's tenure..... and Buhari that kuku did not finish secondary school himself.... what else can he do than be happy at the pauperisation of lecturers.

Non academics can go on strike....but in this case... they are not supposed to have any part in the money at all..... it is called earned academic allowance.... and right there in their name....they are all non-academic staff.... how can a "non-academic" staff get to take earned "academic" allowance....... We like standing logic on its head in this country and its so sad.

Meanwhile...this is not to say that non-academic staff are not important...they really are.... and its bad enough that I will even ask that the FG mandates for just one union per sector.... lets know a union of Nigerian university staff... and not these shenanigans..... I know issues will always arise...but I believe a unified association either equal representation between academic and non academics in universities may achieve a lot more for the sector

We all call some police men illiterate for corruption and extortion but if you see how Nigerian lecturers, professors, Doctors, Lawyers etc fight over money to be embezzle and sharing formula you will weep for this country. That's people that are educated and suppose to know better
They are not supposed to need to fight over this money...its the non academic staff who are actually "fighting"....the money was released to ASUU...but the NUC for some reason I cannot fathom decided to play lord and master over it...... I guess because the non-academics make the bulk of admin in universities... and as such are familiar with NUC people... that gave the non-academics time to group up and begin to drag matters which has resulted into this imbroglio... in the end... each lecturer may not get up to 500k ..despite actually being owed millions.... the non-academics however have a different scheme... they share the money in rations based on the staff level ... whereas as an academic .... you will need to justify how much is due to you...by the number of courses you teach and the number of students who took that course....... so even if you are a professor... you may not get up to a junior academic staff...if that person took more courses and more students than you did.

May God help the nigerian academic sector ...

The whole arrangement is a needless once...better to pay each category enough to live on...and this kinds of squabbles won't even arise at all....

You are informed sirr, this sharing formular shows education is not a scam after all
.or is it?. Uncertainty is making everyone want to corner as much as possible . If Nasu is like minutes, ASSU is hours, they are on different
wavelength.. incomparable.

Some bad lecturers show up once or twice a semester, in the same vein some non teaching work extra hours to ensure tight deadlines are met, there is nothing that can justify the 80/20 formula, even ASUU is shocked that FG did such a thing.
If you understand the way universities work, then you would know that lecturers cannot abandone their work because you must cover your lecture schedule plus the CAs/exams, computation of results for students. You cannot postpone a semester or delay student's results. Infact, you must abide by the academic calendar which guides the activities in the universities couple with NUC monitoring through accreditation. Those lecturers that that show up once or twice might have junior colleagues that help them out and you can likely get such in old generation universities with too many academic staff but not in new generation universities with shortage of academic staff. Do you know that most academic staff can't go for leave because if you do, who would do the work? But the non teaching staff enjoy their 30 days yearly. The non teaching staff are doing their work o, but that of ASUU members are different and tedious and thank God Government has listened to their cries and suffering. It's not easy teaching a class of over hundred, marking their papers, computing their results and doing the administrative duties too.

All jobs have payment attached to it, if you are given a job that does not attract a pay, u can decide not to do it.
So if you saw a job with the workload and payment then go ahead to accept it, we don't expect you to complain about workload, if you are complaining about workload that you incurred without pay, you are free to reduce it or walk away, it's same everywhere where human beings live and work, you people ehnnn...

Here's where uninitiated persons like you guys miss it...the statutory job responsibilities that is on the appointment letter of an academic staff is far less than what they end up doing...as for your advise to walk away....the normal university lecturer will do his job...whether properly paid or not...that's why you see people who are grandfathers coming to take lectures on weekends or coming to office for work... which is a complete rarity for non academics...

Have you seen their promotion criteria too...? Does it carry a similar or heavier weighing than the non academics who boasts of being equivalent or not.....even you non academic staffs know the truth when it comes to job roles and deliverables....the only reason a non academic goes for phd is mostly because he's eyeing to be converted to academic roles...else..his career progression doesn't need it...but this is not so for an academic...you and I know this truth...but penury won't make many people agree to what is clear....

Now don't get me wrong...I am not in any way against non_academic staff getting their due...I. fact...I prefer that there be no need for any useless union sef...ASUU o..nasu o...naat o...and wats d name of dat other useless one....co something something...

To me they're all completely needless...it wld have been better that the govt does what is right and pays everyone a liveable wage.......madam yemi esan the previous head of service almost did that during buhari era..I guess politics made her drop the plan later....harmonisation of salaries...i.e baseline salaries for all staff at same level in civil service....irrespective of their mda....the only difference shd then be on the quality of qualifications...training..years on the job and specifics of job roles...

That is why even cleaners are able to own houses in developed nations...without having to steal..... all these dragging left and right.

..in the end..people only got about 40% of their computed monies...40% of 1million is how much?

The whole EAA thing should by now have been mainstreamed since

Theoretical as usual, even students can attest to some bad lecturers who just show up and sell their miserable handouts/books which is used as CA then dictate 1 week and that is the end. If they are overworked, it is because they by themselves choose to over admit in order to get more income by way of increase in sales of materials

They come to work on weekends, public holidays and during strike because of nwa babies, if Bursary staff don't do their work will you as a lecturer receive a salary? there are many non teaching roles that come to work 24/7 in the medical centre, library, etc

On the issue of promotions, its now top heavy, you see some Professors who cannot tally simple arithmetic on national TV, one wonders how come whereas non teaching are being stagnated at the top.

this 80/20 is simply satanic

1. In sensible countries....all scores and results calculations are done ...in the departments...by relevant error proof softwares and a few other staff.

2. The non_academic ones in them are non_academic....and EAA cannot be claimed for them...vc office cleaners are bot doing academic work...mail sorters are not academics...technicians are not academics...are they unimportant ...no..they are very important but are they academics....no....stop mixing the issues up....

A better allowance criteria can be drafted for those ones too...although I wl prefer that all those nonsense allawoa cos people fight about are simply mainstreamed into salaries...

If the ones where you are come to work during unofficial hours for nwa babies...it is because that's how corrupt your environment had become.....the Uni I'm most familiar with is one of the top five in Nigeria and they continually go take lectures on weekends...mostly because the large halls that can accommodate the student better aren't usually free during weekdays...

Medical staff work in shifts...do you think their salary scale is the same either yours?... the conhess salary scale they run already caters to the peculiarities of their role....

Bursary staff are not doing "academic" work....they shouldn't have any part in academic allowance..their shd be a different category for them....not EAA.... 80/20 is too stupid...each union should get their own 100/100 separately.....FG will tell the people that they've given money to ASUU.... instead of you people to go find your way to get your own...you'll be agitating to collect part of ASUU's own...... when u guys lobbied and got hazard allowance...did ASUU come to fight to be included...why wl u guys wait for ASUU to fight a matter and just when something sensible comes of it....you start rabblerousing....

If not because of needless trouble....I wld hv preferred that ASUU takes all of this money...then u guys also go fight for urs as u always do...then dont share with ASUU when it yields fruit.....

It's a stupid nation that pushes her professors to start counting votes...that's how bad and poor they hv made the Nigerian academic become..such jobs shd not be for anyone above senior lecturer post.

That's why ASUU has washed their hands off Nigerian elections and any professor that goes for it is entirely on their own.

As for the staff becoming top heavy....its partly the govt fault and partly University non academic admin fault....there's a standard academic/non_academic staff ratio....but ur mgt people will fill all job slots with non academics...because they want to gift their family members and friends. Leaving only small slot for lower cadre academics....

That is why your departments always go to borrow academic and sometimes (fewer number) non academic staff....before they can pass accreditation.

It is the work that those extra staff they normally borrow...that the number staff are bearing on their heads..that's why they're entitled to EAA...It wkd hv bn better for the govt to employ that number of staff in those departments...it'll prolong the life of staff....and recude unemployment.

You are the one making a demarcation between academic and non-academic staffs, for all I care, the two are essential part of a system that makes the system works, if one could function effectively without the other, the other won't be existing in the first place.

When you are done with making demarcations as well as your assumptions and permutations about me being a non-academic staff, you can decide to put on the cap of reasoning.

You can't complain about workload when you saw workload and accepted the job, I have seen enough of academic and non-academic staffs to already know that someone going to work on weekends or whatever time he chooses is solely his choice, not a yardstick for measurement in this conversation.
