"Stop Working Any Month Salary gets Delayed" - ASUU Directs Members by fergie001(op): 9:48am On Jun 11, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed all its members across branches nationwide to boycott classes any month their salaries are delayed beyond third day of a new month and remain so until their salaries are paid.

The union said it invoked this “no pay, no work rule,” because members cannot continue to work without food in their stomachs and without money to transport themselves to work or meeting other obligations

The President of the union, Professor Christopher Piwuna, disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Nigerian Tribune on Monday night.

He stated that the manner by which the Federal Government is “deliberately frustrating” the smooth operations of the newly-introduced Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) that replaced the rejected Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) informed ASUU to take this work boycott path.

According to him, “FG is punishing university community because we rejected IPPIS platform.

“We strongly believe this position because we can’t understand how other workers who are still under IPPIS get paid promptly while suddenly we that had migrated from the platform are consistently not being paid promptly, again.

“Now, we don’t receive our salaries as and when due again and our best explanation to this sudden development is that government is punishing us just because we were out of IPPIS platform.

“There is no other way to explain this because we are very sure that if we were to remain within IPPIS, we would have been paid when others are being paid.

“And more so, government has not come out to tell us why our salaries are always being delayed.

“So, the position of the union now and which NEC has already resolved at is that if our salaries are not paid the third day of a new month, we won’t work until we are paid. And we have communicated this to all our branches.

“This is simply because the economy is not friendly to us just like to many other Nigerians.

“And that is why we keep asking government to let us conclude, once and for all, our renegotiation on the 2009 Agreement so as to know where we are all going.”

You actually can't blame ASUU or any civil servant that does this.

No be only lecturers....civil servants in general don't regularly receive their salaries as at when due.

When I was a house officer at a federal government institution, MDCN would delay our salaries....a good number of times almost 2 weeks into the new month. While doing this evil, they would not communicate with us, no explanation whatsoever. And, of course, we were expected to work tirelessly morning, afternoon, and night.

The government is just careless and irresponsible. And, by government, I don't necessarily mean Aso Rock. I mean heads of organizations like MDCN, etc. These people are as wicked and as careless as the politicians. I mean, why on earth would you delay the pay of a worker...not minding the consequences? Nil explanation? Nil communication...like these workers are not humans with needs, huh?

Our problem is not just the occupant of Aso Rock....we need to look inwards and hastily realize how much we are wicked towards each other. If we don't sort this out....and keep blaming the president, then OYO na our case for eternity.

Nigerians will play deaf to such cry from ASUU now. When the union goes on strike, they will start demonizing them.

Is it not wickedness to have workers salaries delayed until 8th to 10th of the next month?
The meagre salaries for that matter o.

I'm just wondering ... Are the huge salaries of political office holders (especially senators, rep members, and ministers) delayed?

Re: "Stop Working Any Month Salary gets Delayed" - ASUU Directs Members by surgical:
It's because people are not talking about it and I don't know why
This is the worst federal government in history to federal workers and pensioners
It paid the least minimum wage even lower than some states in Nigeria
Workers are and pensioners are owed several months running into years of areas of wages and awards, in some cases there are reduction in salaries that are not enough without explanation
Complaints are ignored, the government just carry on in impunity, in what can anybody or anyone do to us ,we are in power
The government behaves as if in power to punish Nigerians
They are not accountable, maybe due to the way they came to power

Migrate to IPPIS and put an end to all the back and forth concerning salaries.

ogascomax:
Another foolish talk again. Instead of you to say government should pay their salary as at when due you are asking them to migrate from the criminal ippis scam.
Arindin.

Are other workers on IPPIS complaining of late salary? No. That's because it is working perfectly.

That goes to show you there's something wrong with the system ASUU is using. So why are they avoiding IPPIS?
Re: "Stop Working Any Month Salary gets Delayed" - ASUU Directs Members by phobia2002: 10:08am On Jun 11, 2025
So ASUU been looking for ways to take their usual long holiday with pay but Tinubu has been stopping by promptly paying their salaries and allowances, gave them 50 billions recently. Now they don't want Tinubu to break their useless record of ASUU strike in every govt of Nigeria. If u invoke no pay no work don't cry when govt invoke no work no pay

Baba will not see anything wrong in what the government does oo. You will rather provide a justification as to why any wrong doing by the government should not be mentioned.

So because there are assumably some lecturers that miss class, it is justifiable that lecturers' salaries are delayed for no just reason?

when we told Nigerians to make sure they elect their leaders, they think it's a joke, these guys are behaving like this because they feel the people have no say in how they got into power
An example see the humongous salary approve for supreme court judges from 1.2m to 5.3m per month that is an acknowledgement of their perceived importance, while the people are to endure 70k per month, that doesn't even come on time, next time the people might do well to increase their value or usefulness by making sure they are important in electing their leaders

Now, this is another angle.

Many will ignore this part of the story because if shots are fired here, they'll hit our parents, siblings, friends, ourselves, etc. Lecturers skipping classes, coming late, accumulating skipped classes to deliver one 10-hour lecture on a Saturday...a day students should use to sort their other businesses out.

All these amount to the Nigeria we have today.

So, we have 2 wrongs here....failure to pay salaries promptly, and not earning your pay...not doing exactly what you were employed to do.

Nigerians must learn to take responsibility. It takes us to make the country work, not just the leaders. If the civil service is corrupt (as it is now), no matter how good-intentioned a leaders, the workers will frustrate such a leader to failure....unless say na military rule or something like that. If the government decides to come hard on the civil servants, the streets will host unending protests and civil unrest.

Only way out is for us to look inwards and sort this issue out first.

Tertiary Education Trust Fund are the one responsible for the disbursement of lecturers salary.

Who are the people on the board of TETF? Are they politicians?

You mean the one that kept the health workers on strike for 13 month. Any leader that can ignore health workers for one month will never reason ASUU for 5 years
