Previous thread: https://www.nairaland.com/8446358/nurse-refuses-treat-accident-victim It is very important to know that not all females working in the hospital are nurses, likewise, not all males working in hospital are doctors. The recent incident that happened in Federal Medical Centre in Abuja shows a doctor who refuses to attend to an accident victim and from the video captured, it took more than 4 minutes before help came to the victim. I am not saying it is the duty of that dr to bring out the patient. Infact, it is not the duty of a doctor nor a nurse to bring out the patient. There are people designated for that but this is Nigeria where right things goes wrong and wrong things goes right. It is just sad that Nigerians in our myopic way of thinking are quick to point an accusing finger to Nurses if anything goes awry in the hospital forgetting that not all female you see in the hospital are Nurses. There was a post here, that tagged a Nurse as the culprit who refuses to assist the accident victim. But the said person is not a nurse but a doctor. Her name and title is boldly written on her left chest. We need to know that everyone should be accountable for his or her actions. Everything, especially unfortunate circumstances doesn't boil down to Nurses who are been rate low in the health sector.

It's not the duty of a doctor to bring out patients from the car. Simple. The only mistake she made was to engage the man videoing in argument. She should have walked away and go to call the attention of the appropriate personnel. |

Op, it seems you don't know that non-medical health workers in Nigerian hospitals are usually made the scapegoat when anything goes bad in the hospital. It is not only Nurses, it goes round all health workers aside medical doctors. |

Every patient , first belongs to a doctor and not the nurse. A doctor owes a patient the duty of care. The oath taken during induction is, “do no harm.” The duty of care demands that a doctor do whatever it takes to benefit the patient. In fact, during emergency, every reasonable effort must be to stabilize the patient by the doctor. When a doctor is present in a setting with other healthcare workers, there is a natural hierarchy in the chain of command with the doctor taking the lead. The aim is to avoid confusion in the delegation of task. During emergency. others must follow this lead. A very important question to ask is, what would another reasonable doctor with same training and position do in similar situations? Would he/she overlook or neglect the patient? Another way to look at it is to ask, what would the doctor have done if that patient was a family member? These moral and ethical issues are considered from two perspectives. Was the negligence intentional or unintentional? When you see a patient in acute distress and refuses to take action, it is intentional. The harm caused by the inaction could have been avoided by another rational person. |

The man recording was too quick to video.... Why video when he can help in brining the patient in if the case was critical..... The man was very low brain dead in my option |

![]() Stop defending what is not, nobody is a kid here, and this is an adult forum, where more information is being passed, you are not talking to toddlers.. Irrespective of designations, this is an emergency case that needs immidiate attention and assistance, and since either the nurse or doctors are down, when the victim was wheeled there, they should be able to assist, irrespective of seniority.. We are talking about human life, and that's what they signed to protect.... |

Nigerians do not know what emergency mean. In cases of emergency, there are no role division. Everyone works to save the patient |

So because the surrounding is dirty, the manager should sweep since the goal is to make the environment clean? Some people are funny. They aren't even talking about the porters who are to wheel patients in |

Maybe because it's a government owned hospital so everybody acts whichever way they want.. First step the doctor would have taken even if she doesn't want to bring out the patient was to first examine or check the patient condition while in the car and that can give clear knowledge of they can handle or refer. None of them tried to examine the patient or go close. The ethnic of their profession is to save life. When you don't have a nurse or other health worker to wheel a patient then a doctor can do so if that will save life. If it's a private hospital that doctor could be on his way.... Save a life first. |

I thought doctors first call was to save life... It was an emergency case. She should have at least examined the patient first. And then lay complaints about who wasn't doing their duties later. Health workers should be humane because their profession involves life! |

Whatever her title is, that doctor needs to be sacked and her license suspended. We've seen several instances of health incidents happening in airplanes on transit and doctors intervening. Though these happened in the west. Our medical personnel here are soulless animals. Rubbish! |

When issues like these are argued, you wonder if we don't truly deserve the current state we are in Africa. Someone even compared life with sweeping. Scrutinize the issue from the angle of a; Health practitioner Doctor & Human |

Well, at this point, this is moot...! Whether it was a nurse, pharmacist, or cleaner... It still boils down to poor care management in that establishment, which reflects on the leadership and management. When you instill a law and culture of ethics and professionalism, none of your staff will act in such way towards patients. Such acts of being uncaring and crude happens in almost all public health centers in Nigeria, and every member of the healthcare team is culpable! |
