A petroleum tanker transporting 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, was involved in a crash on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, along the Oyo-Ogbomoso Expressway, near Irepo Junction in Oyo State.

According to reports, the tanker, a HOWO trailer with registration number KMC65ZC from Kano State, lost control while in motion and somersaulted, causing its highly flammable content to spill onto the roadside. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the incident.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, revealed that the incident was reported at exactly 3:51 p.m., prompting a swift emergency response from his agency.

“Upon arrival, our team met a fallen petrol tanker with fuel gushing out. We immediately deployed chemical foam compound to contain the spillage and neutralise any potential fire outbreak, which could have been ignited even from a distant spark,” Akinwande explained.

He further attributed the accident to the driver’s lack of concentration while on the road.

Personnel from the Federal Fire Service also joined the operation, while officers from the Ojongbodu Division of the Nigeria Police Force were present to ensure security and maintain order at the accident scene.

The incident raised concerns among locals, given the high risk of explosion from such a substantial quantity of petrol, but thanks to the prompt intervention by emergency services, a potentially deadly situation was averted.

Nigeria is abnormal. When the road is bad, vehicles will break down but fatal accidents will be less. When the road is good, reckless driving will destroy lives and properties. What saves life in other countries destroys life in Nigeria. What destroys life in other countries seems to be life-saving in Nigeria.

Those tankers should not even be taking the same route as normal vehicles.

In April thanksgiving service, three separate families gave testimonies of how God delivered them from tanker accident on IB/Ogbomosho road.

The road/route needs a state of emergency declared ASAP.

The report clearly stated that the incident happened along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, but the headline gave the location as Oyo-Ogbomosho road. This is crass reportage!

I hope no life was lost. Tanker drivers really need to undergo serious training and orientation because one mistake from them can endanger the lives of so many people.

We don't have roads but they are building a coastal road. That project is a misplaced priority. That money should be used to rehabilitate all federal roads.
