Meanwhile they condemned the practice here as 'backward, primitive and barbaric' and forced zinc roofs on you which they knew would go rusty and give you 'brown roofs', while they cashed out with your thatched roof system in their land, making billions.

Meanwhile you, till today, still regard your thatched roofs as a 'sign of poverty' and 'underdevelopment'.

We blacks must always blame the whites for everything
So it's the whites that told you to stop using it in africa or Africans saw a better luxury and decided to switch

Let's keep blaming them, since we are too irresponsible to own up to anything

You need to go and study the colonial impact on Nigerian society. Many norms, from religion to language to public administration systems to trade networks, to traditional educational systems were suppressed or dismantled in favour of colonial systems designed to favour colonial interests.

Corrugated iron and zinc imported from England would have been been presented to the 'natives' as the 'best, modern option', ignoring and downplaying the benefits and aesthetics of thatched roofing. Enriching British businesses. Thatch? No money in that for them. Every man could make his own roof. Much better to have them Buy their roofing from UK.

It's called social engineering for profit by force of colonial power.

According to AI

''The widespread importation of British zinc roofing sheets during colonial rule disrupted and devalued traditional African thatching industries, especially in places like Nigeria. Here's how and why:

🔄 1. Economic Displacement of Local Thatchers

Before colonialism:

Thatched roofing (from grass, palm fronds, raffia, etc.) was a vibrant indigenous craft, with skilled thatchers providing roofing services for homes, palaces, shrines, and granaries.

These artisans had seasonal work cycles, community status, and deep spiritual and architectural knowledge.

After zinc imports:

British firms brought in mass-produced, “modern” roofing sheets, often subsidized or made accessible through colonial trade networks.

By the 1920s–40s, zinc roofs became widespread among:

Mission buildings

Schools

Courthouses

Wealthy elites’ homes

Result: demand for thatching plummeted, especially in urban and semi-urban areas.

👑 2. Zinc as a Colonial Status Symbol
British authorities promoted zinc roofing as a sign of “progress,” “cleanliness,” and "civilization."

African elites (chiefs, traders, converts, civil servants) were encouraged to abandon thatch to display their allegiance to Western modernity.

Thatch was increasingly mocked as backward or unhygienic — despite being:

Cooler in hot weather

Cheaper

Locally sustainable

This created a class divide where zinc = elite and thatch = poor.

⚠️ 3. British Trade Policy Favored Foreign Goods
Colonial economic systems favored imports from Britain rather than developing or protecting local industries.

No support or innovation was offered to thatching, which remained informal and unregulated.

British firms like UAC used their influence to dominate material supply chains — from roofing sheets to nails and tools — sidelining indigenous crafts.

🔥 4. Cultural Consequences
In many communities, thatching was tied to rituals, apprenticeship systems, and seasonal festivals.

The collapse of demand led to cultural erosion, as younger generations stopped learning the craft.

Sacred buildings and ancestral homes were sometimes retrofitted with zinc, disrupting symbolic or spiritual meanings tied to natural materials.

🧭 Final Thought
Yes, British zinc imports during colonialism disrupted traditional African thatching economies, replacing a skilled, sustainable, and culturally rooted practice with imported industrial material—and reshaping not just the skyline, but the social order.''

After how many years you still blaming the white man for your failures. When a 10 year old boy says am suffering because my parents are poor its understandable, when a 50yr old man tells you that, won't you look at the man like a lazy person?

You keep blaming slavery, colonialism and all that, but if the whites put a ship at different ports in africa and drop chains there and ask those interested in being slaves in America should chain themselves and enter the ship, A lot of countries in Africa will be almost empty. Let's keep blaming the whites, never wanting to take responsibility for our backwardness

Trust me when I say that you need a very big redemption from this repetitive attempt to make people believe old is better when reality shows otherwise. How can you compare these beautiful retro thatched roof houses constructed with stones and concrete, with a fine greenery environment with ours made with mud and situated in smelly environment and scattered without linear or grid arrangement??

I think Nigerians need to go back to mud house and thatch roof in order for most Nigerians to afford to own a house because with the current price of cement and other building materials, majority of Nigerians wont ever own a house in their lifetime and it's scary imagining that angry

We need to reinvent mud and thatch house as soon as possible to help more Nigerians own a house of their own

Spoken like a proper neophyte with zero knowledge of world history.

Are you aware that Africans were the first settlers of every land and continent on Earth?

Are you aware that for tens of thousands years+, the entire world was black?

How will you know?

That’s your colonial head talking.

Based on Zero knowledge of your history.

In Your history, thatch was used to roof houses that were bigger and more beautiful than these UK thatched houses.

Thatch was used by the elite, who tended to and trimmed them atop their multi-storey buildings and monuments in precolonial Nigeria.

Are you aware that Benin was described as one of the most beautiful and best planned cities in the world by visiting Dutch and Portuguese traders in the 15th century?

It’s houses were described as beautiful, large, with galleries and gables, and well ordered.

Multi-storey monuments, with beautiful Thatched Roofing.

Benin City had streetlights 300 years before London did.

It had underground drainage with sunken impluviums to drain away storm water.

A mighty wall that was 4 times longer than the Great Wall of China secured the kingdom.

The Guinness book of records 1974 edition described the Benin Wall and Rampart system as “the world’s largest earthworks carried out prior to the mechanical era”.

How dare you insult African civilisation, without which the entire world would be in caves?

The only reason our thatching looks wretched today is because it was Abandoned by the majority due to colonial coercion to use zinc roofing.

It was left to the poorest villagers, hence its poor, untended appearance.

When thatch was the Norm, we had beautiful, majestic houses and palaces that were covered by expertly designed, beautiful thatch. In cities and towns and villages.

Ok?

So posting poor village huts to scorn your own heritage is all can we expect from you Lost Nigerian youth drowned in self loathing.

What else do you know?

A people ignorant of their history will repeat the mistakes of that history.

Knowing your African history is not about “blaming whites”.

It’s about knowing yourself. Your ancestors. What they experienced, including when they were invaded by thieves and mass murderers carrying a fake “holy book” they used to make you worship them as they robbed you.

Ok?

That’s why you are poor.

AI says that Britain owes Nigeria 50 trillion dollars, based on centuries of exploitation.

And Africa is owed $5,000 trillion by the west for its exploitation.

Until Africans are repaid what they are owed, this world will know no peace.

Wanna bet?

It’s a spiritual thing.

The Cradle of Civilisation Must be recompensed.
