Fourteen months after the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja was shut down for renovation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alongside the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, inaugurated the rehabilitated facility on Tuesday, with pomp and circumstance as the minister renamed the national asset after the president.https://dailytrust.com/fiscal-expenditure-n39bn-icc-cost-can-build-312-health-centres-1200-classrooms/

Wike won't be interested in building classrooms and health centers, he's only interested in projects that will serve as conduit pipes to siphon monies or why would anyone be bragging and dancing after spending 39bn on something that won't add value to most of Abuja residents |

Obi didn't hold a local government election in Anambra state till he was about to leave power. What did Obi do with the billions of naira the LG areas in Anambra state were entitle to? |

I have entered this ICC for more than 20 times in the last 15 years, I don't see what called for wastage of N39bn, when most events that takes place their can use other good venues and people are becoming poorer. ![]() |

🤔 Let's look at it from another angle.. Can the refurbished ICC generate 39 billion naira in revenue for FCT government? If the answer is yes, then I'll call it a good investment. |

In saner climes, since the Minister of the FCT Nyesom Wike doesn't enjoy immunity, he would be invited for a commission of enquiry, probed and sanctioned with a Jail term or told to return the loot of the ICC renovation. It's the height of corruption and an affront to common sense for the whooping sum of N39B for a mere renovation of an existing structure. As a construction expert, My team just reviewed and estimated one of our new projects in Lagos- State - A sixteen (16) storey building ocean facing with a 21 meter depth pilling. That is the depth of Third (3rd) Mainland bridge. The estimated cost of the building from scratch including pilling and construction cost including land is N14B. The FCT Minister needs to be probed on this particular expense as it is a humongous over-inflated contract for a mere renovation. If the Nigerian opposition and EFCC are effective this is a clean case of thivery and bare faced corruption. |

Politicians must chop whether you like it or not ![]() Nigeria was not designed or intended to be a great country. It has to be a place where human and natural resources can be easily exploited by international kleptocrats. If you doubt me, let one government attempt to initiate a tangible project that would genuinely improve the quality of life in the country, guarantee our sovereignty, economic progress and security capabilities, then you will see the real enemies, foreign and domestic, show their hand work. Do you know what we would have been capable of if we had a properly functional Ajaokuta steel industry and 4 working oil refineries by now? All these japa nonsense, welcome to new dispensation crap we read online from Nigerians would not even exist today. |

Yes it can , but in five years they will all be in a mess because Nigerians won't pay the tax that would generate revenue to keep them well maintained and working. They would instead pretend that a budget below 40 trillion naira can fix problems that at least need a revenue of something like 60 trillion naira for health care alone, can fix them. We don't want a government that would replace the tinubu government and change our economic basis, we want to chop money. We don't want to pay tax and we are too lazy to hold the government to account. Magical thinking We better face reality. And yes, the ICC money was spent on a white elephant that does not benefit most of us. The thing should have long since been privatized and run on profit basis, while we spent government money on benefiting the people But at the end , a health care center needs money for maintenance, upgrades and upkeep. And it needs money to be stocked with drugs. And ya think you are going to employ workers on the kind of wages that makes them japa today? Taxes and then manufactured goods and services. Hold your government to account. And to get there starts by removing this government and not voting for pdp Manufactured goods and services |

Those criticising the project should not step their feet in the ICC.They should go to the local primary school in kuje to hold their events. If it's not renovated they'll still be the ones to shame the minister .Now it's been done to a good standard they are still complaining. Make una rest. |

I don’t understand why the cost of the ICC revamp is generating so much controversy. The more relevant question is: aren’t there already primary health centres, schools, and hospitals in Abuja? The rationale behind upgrading the ICC is that it regularly hosts foreign dignitaries, and it should reflect a standard that signals goodwill and seriousness to our international partners. The criticism seems misplaced—revamping the ICC and investing in hospitals and schools are not mutually exclusive. Both can and should be pursued simultaneously. |

Loud it. I wish this country can start prioritizing needs and also have a public scrutiny of project cost before execution. |

Kam2021:It would have been better to concession it , instead of spending money needed elsewhere on it. Government builds goodwill and the ICC under concession earns money for the concessionaire and government |

Ikaeniyan0:Guy I don't understand this obsession with Obi. We are talking of ICC that was built with 250m Naira that is how renovated with 39billion naira more than the initial cost of building it if you take into account time value of money and inflation. The only sensible thing in your mind is Obi!!! God will have mercy on you. |

I don’t support the huge amount spent on that renovation but let’s face it: if that N39b were to be truly voted for thousands of those schools and health care centers, will they be built? Let’s not be fo0li.ng ourselves. Let’s forget about what that N39 could get us, alternatively. It won’t still get us. They would waste it. |

RhinoChest:That is not the issue. There real issue here is the cost of the renovation. Oga ICC was built by IBB at 250m naira. Now it is renovated at 39billion naira. If you take the cost of building it in 1991 and look at the time value of money till 2025 and add inflation to it. 39b is far more than the Present value of 250m naira when you add inflation to it. |

treesun:This write up is trash! We should differentiate between the FG and FCTA. FCTA is like a state. Therefore, whatever it does must be separated from the FG. It's like sharing Anambra state's money and saying the money could have been used to construct borehole in Sokoto. Rubbish. FCTA is in charge of Abuja the capital of Nigeria. It should have befitting buildings to project the image of Nigeria. For crying out loud! How much is N39 billion in dollars? It is not even up to the cost of the house of some celebrities in the US |

Kam2021:Nobody needs marble walls and golden chandeliers to speak truth to power. If N39 billion can be found for cosmetic renovations while public schools and hospitals remain in ruins, the real shame isn’t on the critics,it’s on those applauding waste while the country suffers. And this habit of telling people not to use roads or public buildings if they criticize wasteful spending is laughable. The ICC was built with public funds, not private donations. Citizens have every right to question how their money is spent and still walk through the front door. |

There are so many misplaced priorities in this govt I passed this Suleja-Lapai road to Ilorin yesterday and it was an eyesore. This is a major road linking the North to the South. In fact, majority of trailers and trucks carrying goods from North to Lagos ply that route. You need to see how goods worth millions were wasting on that axis as a result of fallen trailers. While I was there around 7pm, a fuel laden truck fell inside one of the muddy potholes spilling its contents in the floor. Imagine the kind of hazard that can lead to if a fire were to start with other fuel trucks stuck on that road in the mud. I didn't waste time to quickly drive out of that place. I was now thinking of all the useless projects these guys keep announcing. 39bn for a conference center. 21bn for VP Lodge. 15trn for a coastal road when major roads are comatose!! Something is basically wrong with these people |

You advocate subsidy removal Power. You advocate full payment of tarriffs So can you kindly educate us how you think govt should spend all the taxes you call for to benefit the people |
