Teachers, Kindly Share Your Private Home Lesson Experience. by Chram(op): 1:37pm On Jun 14, 2025
Whoever has taught in Private schools before would understand that the salaries they pay, when compared with the economic challenges and realities, do not commensurate the teachers' efforts. It is consequent upon this that Private home lessons became necessary to augment one's derisory salary.

Based on the experiences I have had, if you're in a good environment where you teach in a private school that has children from a well-to-do background, you're sure of getting something substantial because these parents don't like to owe sch fees. In fact, some pay before resumption. If you have to teach three students from three different parents, I'm sure you'll earn something good for yourself. But the challenge is, same parents would go tell the sch how much you're being paid or about to be paid. They will complain that what you're charging is too much. A parent said why would she pay that kind of money for just lesson of Three times a week after paying huge sums as sch fees. Because of this, they tend not to pay much especially when same private lesson teacher is a staff/teacher in the sch your child attends. It is also difficult for parents to engage the services of a random teacher who can't be traced to any sch. We all know some private lesson teachers have no school they teach per se

Here's the challenge I had as a private lesson tutor:
I had a parent who engaged my services to be teaching her two children on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We agreed on the amount to be paid by month end. And she was willing to be paying me a thousand Naira for transport each time I went. But when I started, she wasn't consistent in giving me the transport fare. This is how I do my private home lessons, aside from the subjects we agreed on, whenever it is time for School test and exams, I usually do a revision on all the subjects these children are being taught in their respective schools so that they can have a better result than when I came in to start the lesson with them.

In the first month, she delayed my payment for two weeks. I didn't ask her or reminded her about my payment, I wanted to see how much premium she placed on this lesson. The second month, she repeated same thing. She even owed for two months. Sometimes, I will get to the gate, stay out for over 30mins and be knocking and nobody will come out to open the gate. I called, texted and sent messages reminding her that I needed my money but no response. During this period, I became even extra motivated to work as her children were encouraging me based on their readiness to learn.
When she finally paid me, I stopped immediately. She called and called but I never picked. She called my Boss to plead with me to return, but I said NO. I know my worth.

I think people need to be corrected on the public perception of teachers. They are being looked down on and it's unfair. If you're that parent who disregards your children's teachers, you had better repent now before God gets angry.

I know of a parent that wants her child to be taught three subjects in a private lesson, two days per week, but guess how much she wants to pay, 6k per month.
That how terribly people downgrade teachers to.

If you are in a good private school like Chrisland schools or Honeyland Schools your experience will be positive. In a month your private lesson will be around 100k+

I didn't do any private lesson when I was in one of the schools i mentioned I was more focused on upskilling after work of the day.

You are right but you can get in to 1 if you try your luck.

The funny thing is, you can get in if you have someone in 1 of the schools

It was okay for me but I didn't really cash out.
I think teaching is more of impact and passion.
As professionals, one must learn how to balance it and place proper premium on the value one is giving out tho.

Seriously, teachers need to be taken care of in every aspect. Without supporting evil, less pay made some involve in examination malpractice though some are wicked right from scratch.

Aside from involving in home tutorials, teachers should look for ways to upgrade themselves. There are many things we can do to make that work. Teachers should not present themselves as being cheap. If parents are not doing what's necessary, carry you bag and go.

Well, I taught a woman's children who happened to be a family friend. I am not a teacher though, but it was her husband who pay. They didn't default in payment, but the woman fit kill person with food. She was generous to a fault and the good thing was that she cooperated even when I was to use cane on them.

The good thing about this experience is that three 3 children are now graduates, and one don japa.

The joy of teaching children who excel in their academics outweighs the monetary benefits in the long run.

Interesting topic.

I love your response to that parent's wickedness of delaying your pay after quality service delivery
