If you know your worth and your onions, and you package your products and services, there is every likelihood that you would get attractive call-in packages. There are teachers who earn more from call-ins than their actual salary. The point I'm trying to make is that you should repackage yourself and your services and carve a competitive niche for yourself. For instance, you may choose to do call-ins for special needs children (that is if you possess the dexterity to pull that off). You could also focus on language oratory, etc. |

This has been my source of income for the past six years. You can make 300k+ if you're really good at what you do. One thing I've noticed is—it favours those who are in the sciences— I'm a maths teacher. I've been mostly lucky as my clients are generally good people. They rarely default on payments which is a good thing for me because I don't really know how to ask people for money even if it's what I worked for. Overall, it has been a good experience so far and I'm still in the business. |

Chram:It’s not funny tho. I taught while I was still doing my IT. After that I promised myself never to venture into that career again. Private lessons are fun if you have a place where the children gather but if you’re the one going to their place, then expect lots of stress from the kids and their parents. 1: Some parents only invites lesson teachers if the kids is really low. Like a slow learner and when you’re teaching in their houses, there’ll be lots of distractions like tvs and toys and even if you put them off, the kids minds will be absent. So it is really stressful. 2: Some parents will want to delay your payment because they know you can’t chase their kids from their homes. So they start acting weird anytime it’s time for your payment. They start looking for faults and complaining that their kids aren’t progressing. Once they start, just know that money will come late. 3: Distractions from house helps and neighbors especially if they’re kids. They’ll want to come distract your lessons and once that starts just know those kids will be distracted. So it is really stressful and not worth it. There are some exceptions like the one I listed up there. But generally, just expect this anytime, Anyday. |

Is always better you register with a Home tutorial agency instead of being a loner. Here in Ekiti State...i ran 'Daluvy Home Tutorial services' and ensure no parent owes my tutors. Because they will sign a document. Likewise i ensure the tutors give a curriculum centered lesson to our client. Sorry for the awful experience. |

Teacher's salary is so poor that if u don't do extra lesson u won't have even money to feed. I taught for over 14years. Started from senior secondary teaching physics, maths and further maths. I noticed that you will hardly see lessons for this level of class because they are mostly independent. Then I moved to primary school even that I already have a masters in science from unilag. Then I used to make close to 200k while my salary was 50k. I was so good that I have my hands full that I always give out lessons to my colleagues. I had a family where I taught three kids and the kids are so good that even their teachers in school was like this ur lesson teacher is making my work easier. After a while I was just going to collect pension. I told their parents that these children don't need lesson teacher again because they already have studying habits and foundation is already strong but their mama no gree. When I got visa to the UK, the kids were almost crying. I had like 5kids I was taking. Least was 40k. I was even short paid but my lesson parents never owed me. One paid my ticket to uk self |

How do active teachers have time to go visiting homes to tutor pupils/students. I thought that schools now have to do extra lessons and close by 4:00pm! |

Mine wasn't as a full time teacher. After secondary school while preparing for higher institution, I was 18 or so I decided to go stay with my uncle. He happened to be a school owner. I was good In science subjects even I had a B in further math in my WAEC so I decided to impact knowledge and gain more by teaching the students. I wasn't been paid though but I was enjoying it and a good way to wile away time. I noticed the ss3 and ss2 knee almost nothing of what they should know, they haven't done further math before and can't even put stress disyllabic words well enough. In order for them to pass their ceritication exams I needed to put lots of effort into them. My uncle understood this and allowed me free hand. They were to come on Saturdays as well, tuition free. Just come with a mindset to learn. After a while, most of rhe parents started complaining how their kids are giving voluminous assignments and how they don't have time to even eat. Big complain that a PTA meeting had to be called because of my teaching and choking of their wards. Some parents agreed with my stance and understood why I needed to choke them as much as possible as WAEC was few months. Other parents disagreed and said they ain't party to it. One of the parent even gave me 5k that day as he saw the improvement on his 2 kids in the school. The kids will get home and just be reading and doing assignments. At the end, I realized how unappreciative teachers intentions can be and how undermined it is. Well, only 7 students decided to be staying for my extra classes and a parent even mandated his wards to always come even Sundays. I made many of them fall inlove with reading and books till this very day. And soonest, some of them will be doctors, engineers etc as all the 7 remaining got admission almost immediately after secondary school. |

For me, it's a mixed bag of the beautiful, the good, the bad and but never the ugly. The beautiful: apart from prompt payment of fees and allowances...the beautiful offers free services e.g a parent once provided free legal service which I had some funds held up in a commercial bank, another treated my kids free of charge in her hospital. Another one facilitated the admission and treatment of my younger sister for a life-threatening condition in a teaching hospital. The beautiful forms a life-long relationship with you. This precious class is few The good: They pay promptly, serve refreshments and treats you generally good. Give you presents on special occasions like birthdays, Christmas etc. A sign they appreciate your effort. But the relationship ends when the service ends. I have a lot of clientele in this class as well The Bad-they don't pay as at when due but most pay at the end of the day. I don't really have a grudge against them because some of them are struggling parents who are also trying to make ends meet but want the best for their kids all the same. A long list of this also abounds on my list. The ugle-i have heard about them but have never been a victim of this class. Probably because of the class of students I teach. These are parents who fight, curse and beat up their kids teacher even with unpaid fees. Aggressive and violent parents. This is the worst type of parents you can ever deal with. |

Coder2Client:Don't be deceived by their sweet names, 98% of private schools in Nigeria have very very poor welfare package for their teachers/staff. The few that have accommodations for their staff use it as a means of enslaving them, they threaten teachers with sack and make the job very tedious just because they feel you will be stranded once they sack you. If you must teach, don't get trapped in a school that offers you accommodation, cos that will be the beginning of your problem. They will take all your leisure time including nights and weekends that you will become useless to yourself, your social life will also suffer and to japa from the school will be so difficult. Go to a school that will give you small time to map out other ways to survive in this tough economy. As for the Op who does home lesson, next time, request for upfront payment for your transport, let the money be close to half of your pay, once a parent starts doing anyhow, you end the contract, do check and balance to either pay her/him back or collect your balance and move or you stop going for lessons two contacts after your pay is delayed, they will get the message. If the pay is delayed the next month again, you quit totally. Like you mentioned, those parents can pay hundred of thousands to millions as school fees without delay, but always want to treat home lesson teachers less if you lose guard. It is well with those of you still helping the life of our future leaders. |

Rapwiz:You're not serious to say 6k per month is okay. It seems you're still being accommondated and fed by someone else, else you won't be saying this. What school is that that your cousins pay 5k as sch fees per term? I guess it's one of those mushroom schools in a village cos I can't remember any sch in the township accepting 5k as fee per term. Pls don't judge others by your standards. Pls |

| Re: Teachers, Kindly Share Your Private Home Lesson Experience. by Chram(op): 4:52pm On Jun 14, 2025 |
Juliearth:Anty, no body is doubting this. You already know what I'm talking about. How many of these parents are willing to pay much? You should also consider the environment. A private sch located in highbrow areas will definitely pay more than those located in a slum. Out of 100%, only 10% of these schools pay well across the country. Maybe even less that 10% |
