Teacher's salary is so poor that if u don't do extra lesson u won't have even money to feed. I taught for over 14years. Started from senior secondary teaching physics, maths and further maths. I noticed that you will hardly see lessons for this level of class because they are mostly independent. Then I moved to primary school even that I already have a masters in science from unilag. Then I used to make close to 200k while my salary was 50k. I was so good that I have my hands full that I always give out lessons to my colleagues. I had a family where I taught three kids and the kids are so good that even their teachers in school was like this ur lesson teacher is making my work easier. After a while I was just going to collect pension. I told their parents that these children don't need lesson teacher again because they already have studying habits and foundation is already strong but their mama no gree. When I got visa to the UK, the kids were almost crying. I had like 5kids I was taking. Least was 40k. I was even short paid but my lesson parents never owed me. One paid my ticket to uk self
Wow.. what a testimony. God bless you for your work. Your reward is great. Like I wrote on my thread here, the experiences I've had haven't been good. This is because I don't live in highbrow areas. I'm still a struggling young man and can't afford to pay rents in places like that, also being an orphan has affected me seriously. But it's well. I have had over 15years of teaching experience. Have taught in 6 schools within this period

For me, it's a mixed bag of the beautiful, the good, the bad and but never the ugly.

The beautiful: apart from prompt payment of fees and allowances...the beautiful offers free services e.g a parent once provided free legal service which I had some funds held up in a commercial bank, another treated my kids free of charge in her hospital. Another one facilitated the admission and treatment of my younger sister for a life-threatening condition in a teaching hospital. The beautiful forms a life-long relationship with you. This precious class is few
The good: They pay promptly, serve refreshments and treats you generally good. Give you presents on special occasions like birthdays, Christmas etc. A sign they appreciate your effort. But the relationship ends when the service ends. I have a lot of clientele in this class as well
The Bad-they don't pay as at when due but most pay at the end of the day. I don't really have a grudge against them because some of them are struggling parents who are also trying to make ends meet but want the best for their kids all the same. A long list of this also abounds on my list.
The ugle-i have heard about them but have never been a victim of this class. Probably because of the class of students I teach. These are parents who fight, curse and beat up their kids teacher even with unpaid fees. Aggressive and violent parents. This is the worst type of parents you can ever deal with.
"As and when due"
Not as at when due pls.

I hope you didn't say that to your students?

Don't be deceived by their sweet names, 98% of private schools in Nigeria have very very poor welfare package for their teachers/staff. The few that have accommodations for their staff use it as a means of enslaving them, they threaten teachers with sack and make the job very tedious just because they feel you will be stranded once they sack you. If you must teach, don't get trapped in a school that offers you accommodation, cos that will be the beginning of your problem. They will take all your leisure time including nights and weekends that you will become useless to yourself, your social life will also suffer and to japa from the school will be so difficult. Go to a school that will give you small time to map out other ways to survive in this tough economy.
As for the Op who does home lesson, next time, request for upfront payment for your transport, let the money be close to half of your pay, once a parent starts doing anyhow, you end the contract, do check and balance to either pay her/him back or collect your balance and move or you stop going for lessons two contacts after your pay is delayed, they will get the message. If the pay is delayed the next month again, you quit totally. Like you mentioned, those parents can pay hundred of thousands to millions as school fees without delay, but always want to treat home lesson teachers less if you lose guard. It is well with those of you still helping the life of our future leaders.
If you request for any upfront here, you're finished. They will say you're just after money. Even when you're due for payment, don't remind them. Just keep quiet and never ask for your money

cheesy this is funny, did they train you in school? Are you not doing the lesson cos of money? Or you told them the lesson is a way of you giving back to the society? You are not finished if you set a standard for yourself, except you are not good in what you do before you can be at their mercy. I didn't tolerate any parent more than one month in my days of that home lesson hustles, if I leave, their children begin to give them headache and I hardly turn back once I stop coming to your house for lesson, except in few cases where we already had a good relationship before you start misbehaving. I guess you are in a rural area or probably an early years teacher. No Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry teacher stoop low for parents to rubbish in the name of home lesson except he/she isn't sound.

I'm good at what I do. I mean very very good. My bosses and colleagues have overtime attested to it. I teach science subjects and can teach even the art ones. Some colleagues and students even call me a Professor.
I'm not new in the system. Its been over 16years now sir

Those people there have used pidgin English to destroy their children. And I'm not really sure they place much premium on education just like the northerners

Guy, wake up. Sixteen years in teaching is not beans, your years of experience already makes you an authority in your subject areas, you need to retrace your steps and set that standard. From the point of negotiation, if you accept an offer put a clause, the pay is subject to review by you, after one to two months, the children/parents must have seen how good you are and will consider a review of pay or terms. In my last contract with a parent, she declined my request for a raise in pay cos of increase in transport after 6 months with them. I was patient with the parent hoping that she will reconsider my request, she didn't and there was another increase in transport . This time I sent her a text message that I won't be able to continue due to the increase in fuel price hence TP, she got angry and opted for me recommending another teacher cos I suggested that, I didn't reply her. Fast forward to three months after, she called me, I knew she had tried someone who couldn't match up with me, unfortunately for her I was already tired of the teaching hustles. Always make yourself valuable before parents, not just the home lesson parents but those you teach. Some of us were teachers with levels even though we de fine money. tongue

If you are good u are good. My primary school students were already solving gmat maths questions. I don drill them. Even their classmates were telling their parents to employ these kids lesson teacher. I no dey teach for their school but all their teachers knows me. When I was teaching in secondary school shingbai I no dey see because most parents believed that if their kids no know book they go use special centres but u see primary school if u are good u will see correct lessons. If you are good and firm the kids go respect u. Last time I came to Nigeria, I brought them lots of chocolates and biscuits. I also gave them 10 to 20£ to my lesson students. Then during pta or teachers day I go carry gift tire go house. Primary school is better than secondary for lesson hustle for teachers

Anty, no body is doubting this. You already know what I'm talking about.
How many of these parents are willing to pay much?
You should also consider the environment. A private sch located in highbrow areas will definitely pay more than those located in a slum. Out of 100%, only 10% of these schools pay well across the country. Maybe even less that 10%
I understand your point, but I'll still maintain my stance. you can however, choose to limit your prospect and growth to your immediate environment.

The way you carry and package yourself that's how parents will treat you. I have been a Teacher in the privates school here in Abuja for like 8 years now. I Teach Math and F. Maths as well as Physics. I charge 15K per contact of two hours and for online classes we charge in USD. Teachers Know they worth. If you know your worth Parents and school owners will respect you because they know that good Teachers are difficult to come by.
Re: Teachers, Kindly Share Your Private Home Lesson Experience. by placeofallure(f): 7:31pm On Jun 14, 2025
I teach English, just English. I don't want to be overwhelmed with other subjects, so I stick strictly to my area of speciality. That's one of the conditions for which I'll agree to anything with you.

I earn a good six figures at my school. Then I have one private practice that pays two times my salary for 3 days a week. They're a cultured people who have worked abroad for many years before they returned home. They understand the importance of an agreement, so they don't renege. I have a few other private practices that pay stipends like 50k, 40k, I know I can still use that one for subscription. For my work, we do a lot of online stuff, so I don't joke with data.

Without meaning to be immodest, I'm good at what I do; they see results, so they're encouraged to pay promptly. I have clients who are not Nigerian, but they all behave well.. They do referrals but I decline at times. When my hands are too full, I can't be effective.

You can't owe me. That's one thing I know. I don't work with 'onigbese' people, never! Apart from the salary part, some of them give bonuses. Some serve food and drinks, some give other gifts like food stuff, household appliances and all.

So far, I've not worked with anyone with bad behaviour. Teachers should create an ambience of respect around themselves, E get why.

Home lesson undecided
After being taught in class, I'm done.
I mean all I had to do was to be in class
Chram:
Whoever has taught in Private schools before would understand that the salaries they pay, when compared with the economic challenges and realities, do not commensurate the teachers' efforts. It is consequent upon this that Private home lessons became necessary to augment one's derisory salary.

Based on the experiences I have had, if you're in a good environment where you teach in a private school that has children from a well-to-do background, you're sure of getting something substantial because these parents don't like to owe sch fees. In fact, some pay before resumption. If you have to teach three students from three different parents, I'm sure you'll earn something good for yourself. But the challenge is, same parents would go tell the sch how much you're being paid or about to be paid. They will complain that what you're charging is too much. A parent said why would she pay that kind of money for just lesson of Three times a week after paying huge sums as sch fees. Because of this, they tend not to pay much especially when same private lesson teacher is a staff/teacher in the sch your child attends. It is also difficult for parents to engage the services of a random teacher who can't be traced to any sch. We all know some private lesson teachers have no school they teach per se

Here's the challenge I had as a private lesson tutor:
I had a parent who engaged my services to be teaching her two children on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. We agreed on the amount to be paid by month end. And she was willing to be paying me a thousand Naira for transport each time I went. But when I started, she wasn't consistent in giving me the transport fare. This is how I do my private home lessons, aside from the subjects we agreed on, whenever it is time for School test and exams, I usually do a revision on all the subjects these children are being taught in their respective schools so that they can have a better result than when I came in to start the lesson with them.

In the first month, she delayed my payment for two weeks. I didn't ask her or reminded her about my payment, I wanted to see how much premium she placed on this lesson. The second month, she repeated same thing. She even owed for two months. Sometimes, I will get to the gate, stay out for over 30mins and be knocking and nobody will come out to open the gate. I called, texted and sent messages reminding her that I needed my money but no response. During this period, I became even extra motivated to work as her children were encouraging me based on their readiness to learn.
When she finally paid me, I stopped immediately. She called and called but I never picked. She called my Boss to plead with me to return, but I said NO. I know my worth.

I think people need to be corrected on the public perception of teachers. They are being looked down on and it's unfair. If you're that parent who disregards your children's teachers, you had better repent now before God gets angry.

You're not serious to say 6k per month is okay.
It seems you're still being accommondated and fed by someone else, else you won't be saying this. What school is that that your cousins pay 5k as sch fees per term?
I guess it's one of those mushroom schools in a village cos I can't remember any sch in the township accepting 5k as fee per term.
Pls don't judge others by your standards. Pls
The woman must have seen 6k is your value for her to decide to pay you 6k..

Teaching should be for young school leavers, unmarried. It should be used by them for a leverage to attain other things in their lives. If venture into teaching as a married man, hmmm, you will cry. You will be stagnant. What am I saying? You will see paper on the ground, you will pick it, thinking it is money. I'm talking from experience.

1. Go to a public primary school in your Area, and create a friendly environment with the principal, tell him or her that you want to teach as a full-time teacher in the school, and he will tell you how to go about it.
2. But the truth is that the principal can submit your name with other PTA needed for full-time employment if you can get him to do that for you. But you can get the Community development chairman in your Area to speak with the principal on your behalf to the principal.
