On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu conferred national honours on 66 Nigerians in recognition of their service to the nation.

Among the recipients announced by the president, as he addressed a joint session of the senate and house of representatives, was Labaran Maku, a former minister of information.

Maku was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) — 11 years after he received a higher award of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

In 2014, under former President Goodluck Jonathan, Maku was conferred with CON, which ranks above OON in the national honours pecking order.

The CON is typically reserved for senior public servants, ministers, governors, and other high-ranking figures, while the OON is a tier below.

The CON ranks above the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), which itself precedes the OON.

Over 48 hours later, the presidency is yet to comment on the apparent downgrade in Maku’s national honour.

The presidency also wrongly included Reuben Fasoranti and Edwin Madunagu among the posthumous awardees of national honours — but later apologised for the error.

In the past, speakers of the house of representatives were typically honoured with the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), which ranks just below the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

However, in October 2024, the house of representatives rejected the CFR honour proposed for Tajudeen Abbas, its speaker, after the federal government announced plans that Tinubu would confer it on him.

On Thursday, bowing to pressure from the house, Tinubu upgraded the recognition and decorated Abbas and Senate President Godswill Akpabio with the GCON — the second-highest national honour.

WHO IS MAKU?

Maku served as minister of information between 2010 and 2014, first under ex-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later under Goodluck Jonathan.

In 2015, Maku defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) after losing the PDP ticket for the Nasarawa governorship poll.

He ran for governor on the APGA platform in 2015 and 2019 but lost both elections.

This is exactly what one would expect from a confused Tinubu presidency, doing things haphazardly has become the hallmark of this administration.
If they can give a posthumous award to someone who is still alive, then this is minor by comparison.

This is the lowest level Nigeria has ever gotten in governance, it is clear Tinubu and his appointees are not even the ones who prepare the things they publish to Nigerians and they don't even scrutinize it .

Additionally they don't even employ good hands to prepare these things, I mean so the list passed all the hierarchies to the president and none of them saw all these blunders of errors they made?

Speaks volume on the whole type of governance being operated by Tinubu, no wonder the country is the way it is today, it looks like they are too focused on looting and preparing for 2027 that they hand over the important issues of Nigeria to those they employed via tribalism and nepotism who in turn do terrible jobs.

While they who are supposed to even scrutinize the jobs are too lazy to do that, neither would they sack or replace those that did the terrible job because they don't have regard for Nigerians, shame means nothing to them since they have shameless paid defenders online and offline who will fight tooth and nail to support them and their nonsense.

It was obvious that the presidential aides were in a hurry to reward themselves with what is now a weightless national honours that used to be a product of merit from hard work, hence the lack of due diligence.

Anyone who is to be honoured should be screened against that database.

Is Labaran Maku's downgrade intentional?

Does the government not have a database of previous awardees?
Does these awards carry special privileges or it's just honorary? ( By privileges, I mean diplomatic passport, access to some restricted spaces, etc)

I’ve said it a few times that some of his aides are biggest problem and a few need to be fired!

First of all you announce 2 living persons as under posthumous now you award OON to someone with CON.

I blame Gbaja! I don’t like him and I have never liked him. This kind of thing is his responsibility and should not have passed his desk if he were a competent chief of staff!

I'm not sure recipients of these national honors are contacted by the government before compiling their lists. This would've saved the federal government a lot of embarrassments.
