The bill has passed second reading

The senator representing Imo west, has said the red chamber is considering a bill for the creation of “Anim state” in South-east geopolitical zone.

Speaking at a media parley in Abuja to mark his two years in the senate, Izunaso said the bill has passed second reading and is now before the committee on constitution review.

The proposed state, he explained, would be carved out of parts of Anambra and Imo.

“It’s not a favour, it’s a matter of equity. Every other region in the country has six states, except the south-east, which has only five,” the lawmaker said.

He said under the current structure, the North-west has seven states, while the North-east, North-central, South-west and South-south zones each have six.

Izunaso noted that this imbalance has left the South-east “structurally disadvantaged” and has contributed to growing discontent in the region.

“We’re not asking for too much — just what the federal character principle demands,” he added.

The senator said the creation of Anim state would follow due democratic process.

“You can’t create a state by fiat. People must agree through a referendum. That’s how democracy works,” [/b]he said.

In addition to advocating for structural balance, Izunaso used the event to call for a political resolution to the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is currently facing terrorism-related charges.

[b]He claimed releasing Kanu on bail would help reduce violence in the south-east. he said.

“If granted bail, it could significantly reduce insecurity in the region. Criminal elements have hijacked the struggle. Once Kanu is released, they’ll lose any legitimacy they claim.”

Izunaso argued that conditional bail and dialogue could de-escalate tensions in the region.

“I’m not saying it will stop the violence 100 percent, but it will go a long way. Once the real struggle ends, any further violence becomes purely criminal,” he added.

What kind of useless name is that? 6th state should be created from Anioma, Delta state and not Anambra and imo

Delta State is big. If Delta North can be carved out and added to the South East, it will make sense. It will reunite peoples across the South East and our brothers on the other side.

This is cheating, south west should have 10 states , ....ijebu state , ibadan state, lagoon state and oshogbo state

This one will not work na garaje,to get votes,they will need to get the approval of 2/3 of the states houses of assembly, it will not pass

The question is will it be done in isolation of other zones also requesting for additional states If yes, then its cool and worthy to be "news"!
Else, it's just normal lamba from the red or green Chambers.

No land grabbing, carve the new state from the already existing SE states.

Anioma State is more viable and better than creating another one inside SE.

I swear Ebonyi Abakaliki are being insulted, harassed, victimized, called names and killed by these people.

They even call us fake Igbos and Hausa of South East.

If they want to add another state they should remove Ebonyi from South East we have suffered in their hands.

No civilian govt has capacity to create states except illegitimate military govt.

All states in Nigeria were created from illegitimate military govts starting from Gowon!

The plebiscite that created the midwest region started with the colonial masters.

This is not possible, igbo cannot have any state across the river Niger, that is a natural boundary between the east and the south.... Look for another state among the 5 existing igbo states.

The bill will calm down tensions in south east.
Tinubu should ensure that the bill scales through.

But do the people of Anioma what to be "igbo" because I don't think I know any tribe who detest the igbo name more than those people...I lived many years with them and they rather be called anything else than igbo.

Imo people should not touch any area in Anambra in their quest for state creation. They should create the state out of imo state.

The Niger River has often been seen as a natural dividing line in Nigeria, especially during colonial administration. It separates:

East of the Niger: Core Igbo states like Anambra, Imo, Enugu, etc.

West of the Niger: Areas like Asaba, Agbor, and other Anioma towns in today’s Delta State.

Extra state creation, in any part of the country, should not be contemplated for now.
