We only have three Gen. 3.5 Jets (JF-17 Block 2), some Leonardo jets, and old Chinese ones. We do not have aircraft carriers or large planes for en route refueling, we would not have the ability to get our planes into South African airspace. We also do not currently have missiles capable of penetrating their air defenses. South Africa is also not as strong as it used to be. Neither country can project power far away from their own core territories.

Once you realize that the below isn't always true then you can approach realities without seeking for mindless consolations.

Precisely. El Rufai once complained frustratedly that Nigerian armed forces, with their sophisticated equipment, can see the terrorists and bandits moving around yet they never receive the order to blow them sky high and end their menace against Nigeria.

By the mid 80s it fell into a steep decline which it arose from by the mid noughties
Even at that the south african military firepower is quite superior

I'm not sure why any African country hasn't invented a gun yet and still relies on AKs; one of the reasons that kills some soldier morale is going to fight with an AK47 when your enemy also has an AK. There is no model weapon that is superior to the opponent weapon.
