If you are wondering who he is, this is Alhaji Ahmed Mai Deribe . He was a prominent Nigerian businessman and philanthropist from Borno State, renowned for his immense wealth and influence during the 1980s.

Born in 1924 into the esteemed Deribe family, Mai Deribe is perhaps best known for constructing the opulent Deribe Palace, also referred to as the “Gold House,” located in Maiduguri. Built over a decade in the early 1980s, the mansion reportedly cost around $100 million and featured lavish elements, including parts made from liquid gold.

The palace’s architecture blends Arabic, Italian, and Northern Nigerian styles, showcasing intricate courtyards, coffered ceilings, and richly crafted interiors. Notably, the main entrance was bulletproof, and the residence included separate apartments for his three wives and mother.

Beyond his architectural endeavors, Mai Deribe’s wealth extended to owning a customized Gulfstream G550 private jet . His palace hosted several distinguished guests, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana .

In a historic moment, Prince Charles and Princess Diana were received at the Deribe Palace during a state visit. The grandeur and hospitality reportedly left an impression on the British royal family, a rare feat for a private citizen in Africa at the time.
