femtex007:It's just a phone, bro. If her mum can afford it, it's no big deal. I honestly hate the perspective Nigerians have about this mobile device. It's just a damn phone, please. |

Poverty really is the root of all evil. I don’t understand the hate she is being shown. I owned my first phone in my twenties. My nephew got his at seventeen. He is a normal human like anybody here. His younger brother got one at five years old because he was able to speak clearly. It also was for any case he would need to call his parents from school for important updates. That five year old is twelve years today with years of using mobile phones under his belt. That you were denied the accessory doesn’t mean all parents will follow suit. |

nairalanda1:I remember when I would leave my house in Alausa, and either walk or take a bus down to Allen to make a call with card. There'd be people queuing in the 1990s. Now, to even call back, nah stress for me. |

micxwell:Thanks for this comment because I could recall many folks who are parents now chided their own parents when the likes of Mark Zuckerberg, Nicholas D'Aloisio of Summly and other young Americans/Westerners started multi billion dollar tech companies during the mid-2000s to 2010s. The narrative was that these Americans/Westerners had access to devices at a young age, while they (children then) did not have. Today, the same people have become parents and are restricting mobile devices from their children, but expect the same children to out-compete Chinese kids and Westerners in creating the next big companies in technology. |

deji17:Buying an iPhone for your child is not materialism. Seriously, I really wish Nigeria becomes as rich as Malaysia so we don't see certain things as luxury. An iPhone is a phone and a basic item held by many young people in most parts of the world. I have seen ten-year-olds hold the latest iPhones, all bought for by their parents. |
| Re: Bisola Aiyeola Surprised Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Leyla, With An iPhone by GloriousGbola: 3:38am On Jun 17, 2025 |
Gerrard59:It is materialism in naija. You posted about purchasing power parity. This is the same thing. That device is likely over 2m. In addition it is not by accident the child's mother chose to broadcast buying her child this basic item. People who live for flossing on the gram are not going to show basic wins. For Nigerians these things are first and foremost status symbols. More so when 70% of the features will not work in Nigeria The bigger problem is that this likely tech illiterate mother is setting herself up for a world of pain. Too much distraction from devices where children are concerned When mark and Co were growing the internet was a source of knowledge. Today ii is an algorithm designed to hook you engagement bait rage bait and rabbit holes. Everything has been enshittified I am sure you know the version of tiktok we have here is not the same version in China. They have blocked all that brain melting nonsense because they have better ambitions for their next generation You can See it's effect on our male youth with their red pill bs. Also initiating young girls to hypersexuality. That girl in that school scandal is not an outlier. Large numbers of naija kids with devices are hooked on Snapchat. Pretty girls become exhibitionists. Some kids start being inspired by Andrew tate, hushpuppie and co |

GloriousGbola:Fair and balanced comment. I agree with the backlash regarding her posting it, but I can understand since she is a celebrity aka in the showbiz industry. However, except for Tecno phones, most above-average Internet-enabled phones cost a lot in the country. So, in your opinion, what kind of phone should someone like her daughter possess or the average 16-year-old in Nigeria? |
| Re: Bisola Aiyeola Surprised Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Leyla, With An iPhone by GloriousGbola: 3:58am On Jun 17, 2025 |
Gerrard59:As a parent I would say buy your kid a feature phone. Seriously. There is way too much distraction because that is what they are designed for. Even worse is that I have literally seen a case where a friends daughter became for want of a better word, a thot. I am sure the girl has sent out risqué pictures. There is a reason you now read of phones being banned in schools or pressure for laws against phone use by children The YouTube algorithm is powerful and can take your kids down a weird path. Mixes their search with stuff you may not want them to see. Most boys like video games but look up enough on video game and you will be dragged into Andrew tate territory. |
| Re: Bisola Aiyeola Surprised Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Leyla, With An iPhone by micxwell(m): 6:25am On Jun 17, 2025 |
Gerrard59:Honestly bro; This mindset is one of the few reasons why we are where we are as a country. Some are even asking why the mum didn't buy her books instead 🤣, Imagine. All theory, no practical. |
| Re: Bisola Aiyeola Surprised Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Leyla, With An iPhone by micxwell(m): 6:33am On Jun 17, 2025 |
GloriousGbola:Are you saying even adults aren't dragged into Andrew tate territory too? You mentioned a feature phone up there; are you saying the phone will prevent them from being dragged and iphones can't do otherwise? |
| Re: Bisola Aiyeola Surprised Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Leyla, With An iPhone by GloriousGbola: 6:36am On Jun 17, 2025 |
micxwell:do you know what the word feature phone means? it is a dumb phone like a nokia torchlight type phone basically for making calls only |

GloriousGbola:Thanks for enlightening me. But a feature phone for a sixteen-year-old doesn't sound right to me. |
| Re: Bisola Aiyeola Surprised Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Leyla, With An iPhone by GloriousGbola: 9:55am On Jun 17, 2025 |
micxwell:what should a sixteen year old have? the problem is that so many people are buying their children smart phones so if your pikin no get strong mind he/she will feel left out and as a naija matter, a lot of people always push for status symbols over anything else |

What that child need is a treadmill not an iPhone. |

xjiggy:lol so true @seun. Good morning Again..kindly adjust this your spam bot banning unnecessary…yesterday I asked a question that was not rude and it banned me. Also…nairaland is not exam center where essay is written last I checked If a question I’m asking doesn’t need to be more than 5 words why do you need me to add more extra wordings not needed, just to ask a simple question? Please stop stressing people unnecessarily. Wordings are not part of the issues on this forum. At least kudos in bringing some decorum…but don’t make it such a way that people can’t really still express their displeasure about a person or event even when done in a decent manner Thank you |

Gerrard59:Why are men always pained when they see women enjoying or something.if it were a man that bought it for her they will be sore because it means their women will expect it from them.now it's her mom, they are still sore. The other day a man gave his daughter a bouquet flower for her birthday,200 naira folded.in about 10-20 places, that is barely 3k or 4k. Men were agitated. |
