OpenAI boss: Meta offering $100m plus to poach my staff

The boss of OpenAI, Sam Altman, says members of his team have been getting "giant offers" from rival tech firm Meta, including $100m (£74.3m) "signing bonuses."

Meta - which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - is attempting to boost the artificial intelligence (AI) side of its business, including recently spending $14bn (£10.4bn) to buy 49% of the startup, Scale AI.

However Mr Altman said "at least so far" none of his "best people" had been persuaded to jump ship.

No Nairalander, past or present, is qualified to work on the kind of infrastructure used by OpenAI and Meta AI.

Even in advanced countries like China, the USA, and Russia, you'd be hard-pressed to find up to 10 people per state with the intellect to contribute to such projects.

We're talking about systems on the scale of nuclear warhead programs or the Large Hadron Collider this is 0.0001% genius-level work.

There are levels to this thing, man.

Maybe some could build the frontend interface, but the core logic these AIs run on is way above chaff Nairaland programmers league.

Nairaland programmers?? Many programmers are skilled in web development, app development and some in tools and infrastructure.

Programmers for Meta AI suppose need:
Practical Research skills
Experience with working with complex AI projects
Domain knowledge for AI - specialised complex knowledge no be what is LLM and types of LLM
And the least important but still important- ability to turn those complexities into real world applications

I no sure our people plenty wey go get such skills and experiences

I don't think it's wise to disqualified yourself from such project. You'll always have part to play.

If you know the architecture like transformers or JEPA with Jax in python with knowledge of creating LLM and fine-tuning model with GPUs like h100 or NVIDIA DGX it will be easy the backend will be python and the frontend will be built with next js .

Transformer is an opensource architecture in python on GitHub it was used for GPT development. It stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT)



Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA). You can use any anything that framework or libraries you like or vanilla js depending on your area of specialty .
