A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday heard damning revelations about the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during the ongoing terrorism trial of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, News360 Nigeria reports.

An official of the Department of State Services (DSS), who appeared as the fourth prosecution witness, narrated how Ahmad Gulak, a former presidential aide, was murdered in Imo State in 2021.

He also disclosed that between 170 and 200 security personnel had been killed across the South East due to attacks allegedly carried out by IPOB and ESN operatives.

Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the witness testified that IPOB members, under directives from Kanu, targeted security agents and even sought to bury one of their fallen commanders, Ikonso, with 2,000 human heads.

He said only 30 were eventually sourced for the burial rites.

The DSS official also narrated how one ESN member, identified as Uzuoma Benjamin, alias Onye Army, confessed to using the heads of ten young girls to prepare charms for spiritual protection.

He further claimed that IPOB members were instructed to attack security facilities and personnel, with several police stations destroyed in the region.

On the issue of Radio Biafra, the witness told the court that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) confirmed the transmitter Kanu imported was neither registered nor licensed for use in Nigeria.

The equipment, he said, was seized from a location in Anambra State and taken to Abuja. According to the witness, no record of the importation exists, and it was smuggled in illegally.

Regarding the murder of Ahmad Gulak, the witness explained that on May 30, 2021, Gulak was killed by IPOB members at a checkpoint after he failed to convince them he was an Igbo man.

According to the driver’s account, after asking them to speak Igbo, the assailants noticed a Muslim prayer mark on Gulak’s forehead and shot him immediately.

Under cross-examination by defence counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), the witness admitted there was no official record of the transmitter’s importation and that while Radio Biafra was registered in London, Kanu was caught with broadcasting equipment when arrested in Lagos in 2016.

The trial continues.
