We have implemented a minimum post size of 40 characters in order to improve our content quality. We want people to patiently compose substantial replies before hitting the submit button. Based on your feedback, we may increase or decrease the limit in the future.

We have also extended the blocking period between members to 3 weeks, because many Nairalanders felt that the previous duration was too short.

Our automated system for dealing with spam and toxicity is now much smarter than it was in the beginning. It's now much less likely to take action against innocent posts. Alas, it is still far from perfect, so please be patient with us as we strive to make it more perfect.

While is good to stop toxicity this new method is not good, it is making commenting boring and losing interest. The earlier you do something about it the better. How will you get someone banned for saying I love you! You can't comment freely again!

It means you have to type at least 40 letter to be able to respond to any thread and submit successfully, if not, it will not submit.

How to count:

Let's assume that you want to type "I will be there"

I = 1
Space = 2
w = 3
i = 4
l = 5
l = 6
space = 7 etc till it reaches 40 and above

Blocking should be permanent. There are people I do not wish to interact with and those who may choose not to interact with me.

The 40 word rule is a typical Nigerian knee jerk reaction that as you can see can be subverted by just typing characters to fill up the space! It’s not every problem you can or must solve. A solution for a minority that creates another annoying problem for the majority is not a solution.

Please Mr Seun, if we are running a thread in the different sections, can the bots spare us when we make posts, sometimes repeatedly, for certain purposes? 🧎

Well-done Seun. You're doing a great job. However, you still have a lot of work to do. So many people post very insensitive and tribalistic comments on very important threads. This makes me question the mental state of certain members here

40 characters don't change the quality of responses... People just type --------- till it gets to 40

NL lost its way a long time ago, redemption will be difficult... A total rebranding and pivot is required...

I remember NL being a place of information, answers and solutions...

Now all we see here is insults, tribal slurs, bigotry, derogatory statements, APC agenda platform...

This is the best thing that has happened on Nairaland since Nairaland 2 in 2011.

There's no longer any need to make lots of reports to the moderators. The bot has taken care of the toxic posts.

It seemed like trolls were trying to discourage people from using the forum. The level of misogyny was unbelieveable. The trolls would ignore the topic of a thread and concentrate on attacking people. Now a user can simply block anybody that is toxic and he can continue to block trolls who open many accounts to harass people.

Users can now focus on issues instead of the constant wars between people.

Women can breathe a sigh of relief, because they don't have to bear the constant abuse.

The 40 character limit is a minor inconvenience in the battle against spammers.

Basically you've done a very good job with these updates.

Have you ever heard of witty responses? What makes you think a response cannot be powerful but short?

What about images? Don't you know someone can make a satisfactory reply to someone or to a post with an image?

A mandatory 40 character-long requirement doesn't appear too smart. People can still use a series of dots or strange characters to bypass it.

Get more creative.
