My Fellow Nairalanders,

We have implemented a minimum post size of 40 characters in order to improve our content quality. We want people to patiently compose substantial replies before hitting the submit button. Based on your feedback, we may increase or decrease the limit in the future.

We have also extended the blocking period between members to 3 weeks, because many Nairalanders felt that the previous duration was too short.

Our automated system for dealing with spam and toxicity is now much smarter than it was in the beginning. It's now much less likely to take action against innocent posts. Alas, it is still far from perfect, so please be patient with us as we strive to make it more perfect.

Do you know a quote only renders a notification?

In other words, if someone who mentions me edits his comment, do you know I would not get a notification that the comment was edited?

And you realise comments and posts are often edited right?

So you needed someone to point out something so obvious to you after many years of owning this site?

Good. Continue upgrading the forum to make it more better and friendly

The conversations are now making sense since the introduction of anti spam bot and 40 characters
There's no such thing like more better. It's tautology. Take note. That aside, I was told you're same as Seun the creator of Nairaland. How true is that? Just be sincere

I hope Nairaland can take a snippet on how Reddit is run. What I notice is that comments aren't ordered on the basis of 'first come first serve' but comments are ordered using certain parameters. For instance the comment below me: 'E no concern me. Anything wwy una like make una do. E no change the cost of foodstuffs in the market.'. This kind of comment shouldn't be on the front row because:
1. It's irrelevant to the discourse
2. It's a digression
3. It's likely to make some guests or some sort of elitism individuals to lose interest in the site.

In contrast, the successive comment by DaveP: 'Pls can there be a suggestions box thread where ideas can be picked from your hallowed forumites to make upgrades and UX an excellent one?

We need polls on this site. It is a great engagement tool and that feature will help alot, especially in Sports and Education section, etc.
'.
The above comment ought to definitely make front page because:
1. It's relevant to the discourse
2. It sparks up new and reinvigorating ideas that can help augment the discourse.

In a nutshell, I hope Nairaland can implement a system where comments are not ordered on the basis of first come first serve.
Which one is elitism? Oga…there are all kinds of people on twitter for example and the elite are still there also who haven’t lost interest

Secondly, this is a Nigerian forum where people can type in any language be it pidgin or whatever…the commenter expressed himself about the Seun update on the forum how does that affect you?

And Seun…again on this 40 character whatever, If. I may want to respond to a comment probably using a laugh emoji am I supposed to be a talkative to do that? Or a question I want to ask that may not be more than 5 words? I’ve said it before and would say it again, the minimum number of words I have to type before I can post is in irrelevant change. Doing that wouldn’t make your platform more interesting. What would make your platform interesting is eliminating those who incite tribal violence and the likes and work on the antispam bot. Thank you

Good rules do not leave implementation to chance and hope! Again like I said typical of the Nigerian way of doing things!

Please can you reduce the number of times "women" or other slurs targeted at women being made in a day?
For example,a moniker is not permitted to use "women" more than 3 times a day in the romance section?
This makes no sense whatsoever

This is the best thing that has happened on Nairaland since Nairaland 2 in 2011.

There's no longer any need to make lots of reports to the moderators. The bot has taken care of the toxic posts.

It seemed like trolls were trying to discourage people from using the forum. The level of misogyny was unbelieveable. The trolls would ignore the topic of a thread and concentrate on attacking people. Now a user can simply block anybody that is toxic and he can continue to block trolls who open many accounts to harass people.

Users can now focus on issues instead of the constant wars between people.

Women can breathe a sigh of relief, because they don't have to bear the constant abuse.

The 40 character limit is a minor inconvenience in the battle against spammers.

Basically you've done a very good job with these updates.
Good afternoon…kindly don’t try be a woman wrapper. I believe you have been here long enough to know jeon Saphire….siofra and the likes with certain mods siding them and when guys retaliate they get banned. The abuse went both ways but at least it’s better now.

I thought this is just for the first page of every thread but when I tried responding to a post on page 3 of a thread I noticed it applies too.

My opinion is that you limit it yo just first page of any thread cos if it cuts across all pages, it will reduce engagement and many threads won't go pass page 2 or 3.

Sometimes we just need to write short responses but at least it makes sense to have a rich discussion on the first page of any thread.

My opinion.

@Seun, I have 3 important bulletpoints I want you to read for a BETTER user-experience on Nairaland right BELOW.

1] First off, you've done well so far as I was already considering ditching this discussion forum after 20 years of using it because of the heavy disinformation being posted by paid ipob trolls farms on this Website. The BBC Global Disinformation Team investigative video of May 25 2022 had EXPOSED what these paid ipob trolls are doing on several online platforms and I shared the BBC video and other specifics with you on the urgent need to STOP them physically with the Super Moderators and with AI
ASAP.

2] Second, the process of registration of new NL accounts with free throwaway emails have to be looked into and regulated [with a manual check by a moderator or admin and approval process time of 2 to 3 days implemented ASAP which is what many international discussion forums that I've belonged to since the 1990s do] because all it takes for any troll or NL account that has been BANNED for 1 year or more to do is to quickly create a new NL account within just 3 to 4 minutes and he or she keeps posting, trolling, spreading hate speech, and derailing NL threads with massive disinformation which defeats the purpose of the BANS. This has gone on since 2012 with the rise of ipob and other insidious secessionist groups.

3] Third, and most important, YOU still have to do more in stopping many of these well-known NL monikers and paid ipob troll farms from being active here with their disinformation and defaming of the Nigerian President 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I've NEVER voted since I last did on June 12, 1993, but I find it highly IRRESPONSIBLE for a large number of paid ipob troll farms to keep calling 'Bola Tinubu a "drug baron" and "druggie or Iragbiji druggie" right on NL. Since 1993 and even in 2003 the United States Government has affirmed that 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu (the Mobil Nigeria now ExxonMobil technocrat, Chartered Accountant and Auditor who rose to the senior rank of a treasurer) has NO hard drugs trade convictions or is/was EVER a drug baron.

In 2003, the then Legal Attache of the United States Consulate in Lagos, Michael Bonner issued an official document attached right BELOW CLEARLY stating that the then Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State has NEVER been convicted in the United States and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) National Crime Information Center NCIC which is the central database of ALL arrests and convicted criminals in the United States and her territories does NOT include Tinubu's name. Hence the deliberate and repeated highly defamatory insults and references to Tinubu even as of today on NL as a drug baron or druggie or former drug baron by these well known monikers and paid ipob troll farms is unacceptable here.

I hope you can give me your feedback on this in order to ensure that these paid troll farms farms indicted heavily by the BBC Global Disinformation Team investigative video which you have to watch if you haven't for spreading massive disinformation and hate speech with the aim of causing ethnic tensions and disintegrating Nigeria finally kick rocks and get removed totally.

@Seun,

I got several "Unexpected Error" messages while trying to attach to my ORIGINAL post to you right ABOVE on this same thread page the official 2003 official document from Michael Bonner, the then Legal Attache of the United States Consulate in Lagos which exonerated the then Governor 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Lagos State from any convictions in the United States or from ever being a drug baron in the United States based off of the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC) central database of all arrested and convicted people in modern United States history. He CLEARLY stated that 'Bola Ahmed Tinubu's name isn't in that FBI database hence has NEVER been a drug baron like these paid ipob troll farms like to post online to defame him.

Please look into this issue as I think it's indeed a technical glitch on NL NOT from my end.

Sometimes we need just a sentence to pass sn important message. Some sentences can be as short as 20 words. This restriction means adding irrelevant words to make up to volume defeating the purpose of the restriction. Overall, the 40 character mark is too much

I believe the ban is exponential, after your first ban, you need to start treading very carefully.

If you continue being naughty the length will be more. Nothing wrong with that.

I disagree. You cannot improve quality by insisting on quantity. Some of the most meaningful words I have read here are not up to 40 characters.

If you are trying to improve front-page content, you might be going about it the wrong way. You could try increasing the relevance of other pages instead.

This way, Nairalanders will know that whatever page they comment on will still be valuable and significant.
Re: The 40 Character Minimum And Other Forum Updates by TotoIsGud4boy: 8:28pm On Jun 19, 2025
@seun, while this is a good development, I think you should focus more on ranking comments rather than trying to control free speech, or is that very difficult to achieve? If you can devise a way to rank comments based on:
Likes/Shares = Relevance
Quotes/Mentions = Controversy

That’ll be a big milestone… what you’re doing now is just shooting in the dark… you have to make real changes because forums are dead, don’t expect real meaningful content unless you devise a way to rank high quality comments thereby giving users the incentive to post more.

Most people found more value in page 10 or 11, question is how many people are willing to go to those pages ? Please be innovative. Nairaland shouldn't just remain a news aggregator, it should be a place to find and share and discuss about relevant things.

Also work on the ban system, it’s very flawed, users should be banned from a particular section where violation occurred, not site-wide.

It's a nudge in the right direction. I've seen it being used on the Economics subreddit. It is very risky for us because discouraging people who have nothing to say may not necessarily move people who have something to say to fill the gap.
