So, I'm in a jam right now.

I'm a student and also work online. So I decided to rent a new place last week. The major reason is that I need constant power supply.

In this area they use band A light.

But the problem is that other student occupants don't always pay for meter subscription.

Hence there is constant light but most times this particular house don't always have light.

Before paying for rent I actually asked one of the tenants, the person currently occupying the room I paid for and he actually assured me that the compound has no light issues.

So, when they gave them light a few days ago I decided to go and check the house myself and discovered they don't have light while other compounds have light.

I then decided to speak with another tenant and he started narrating the issue to me. In fact, for the last 3 days they've not seen light in the compound even though the street have had constant light.

That some tenants are even using ac, electric cooker and so on.

So when they recharge it doesn't stay long and worst some don't even pay. I was there until night when I saw one of the tenants, a lady going round to raise money they can use for subscription that night.

She didn't get a kobo from the over 20 tenants there. The compound is that big.

So, even if I say I want to sub for the prepaid meter, with 20 people I don't think N20,000 will even last for the month.

I made the payment but I'm yet to move to the house because the other occupants are still in the house.

Please I'm thinking of going to collect my rent back because I can't cope with this. How do I approach this issue please.
It's better to stay in a compound without meter than a compound where more than 2 people share the prepaid meter. U will always have issues like these.

What were U thinking? Just bear Ur cross or if U can manipulate it go to PHCN office and lobby for a separate prepaid meter in Ur name. I did that one time and enjoyed absolute peace of mind while the rest were struggling.

Lol collect what rent back. Money that has entered pepper soup. I doubt U will have a refund. Follow my advice and apply for a personal one and lobby Ur way through. Be prepared to cough out dough and when Ur leaving remove the meter cos it's in Ur name. I did that too. Or U can endure till the rent expires.

Again U can negotiate with the landlord to look for someone else to rent the place as I think this will be his suggestion to U if U ever go to him for a refund and this will waste Ur time. So I guess from all indications U know which route to follow.

Go thier office oga or Ur work suffers and so will Ur finance

Don't request for refund. If you do, he won't give you. Na scope you go take collect am.

Buy a big calabash, put egg inside with palm oil, kolanut and pap. Add palm oil to it.

Put it in front of the compound.

If the landlord asks, tell him it's your belief and you have a fundamental right to practice it.

First of all, those tenants who don't pay for light will run away from the house. Poor people are usually superstitious.

The landlord will beg you to collect your refund.
Hahaha you watching too much AsabaWood grin

The worst thing you can do is share any utility bills with a Nigerian , they will not pay and if they pay small they will want to take advantage and abuse the service so they gain more than all other contributors

lwkmd. The guy has been refunded, else this would have been the best route if the landlord had declined

Mainland or island lagos?so I can know how best to advice you on the next step cz there's a MAF program for BAND A customers where u are entitled to free meter as long as u open a new account on the same address seperating urself from the other account
Abeg explain this for those on the Island cos this my place there's no meter and the billing is outrageous cos of the outstanding debt the landlord and previous tenants accumulated but the thing is I left Ajah to Lekki axis before and sold my previous one. The flooding and constant buying of bathing and washing water made me go back cos it's tiring calculating the water I'm using whenever i put on the tap or shower and I don't know if my name will reflect on their system if I should try to apply again

Update

I'm just living the landlord's house and he had no problem refunding the money.

He doesn't know me personally and this is our first time of meeting.

After explaining who I was and the situation, he asked what I want and I told him I want a refund and he agreed.

He however told me he paid the agent 10k from the money as commission.

So, he could only refund the remaining 190k. He took me round to the agent house to collect the other 10k but the agent was not around.

He then told me I might be wasting my time because the agent probably has spent the money and won't refund without extensive trouble.

He's not even picking his calls. Sha. I got the bulk of the money back and I'm grateful.

So far, I've lost about 36k in search of a house. God abeg.

Also, he asked if it is his duty to collect nepa bills I told him I don't know but somehow it's spoiling the reputation of the house.

He actually seems nice and kind in a way and I kind of regret putting him through the stress and the house is kind is really great.

But me no fit joke with light.
Where did you rent an apartment and agent collect 10k?

It's minimum of 200k for this side

The narration by the OP is in fact the Major issue of sharing a prepaid meter.

If the OP has money, he should link up with electricians around is abode to see of any can arrange a prepaid meter for him. He should make sure there's no debt accrued in the meter oh or else he go pay both world bank and imf debt tire.

Even with debt u can get a meter, there will be an understanding where the debt will be factored into the meter after u clear some part and u repay by subsequent recharge either by 50:50 percentage where the amount bought will be split into 2 or there will be a minimum payment u can not buy below.Like I said the MAF program free meters is only for Band A customers and I don't know if is still on but if is not then u can pay for a meter with the acc number of the postpaid then collect the money from ur rent which must be agreed with u by the landlord

that's it, if you are looking for house that doesn't have issue my brother you would build your own. Light issue still better pass flood or thieves..

Some people should not be living among normal humans. That's why I hate anything communal. I am very individualistic and it has made my life much easier and smoother.

Twenty tenants refusing to pay for light? Not even N1000 per month? Why would a landlord link the electricity consumption of all the tenants to one meter in the first place? Whoever advised him to do so is both stupid and evil.

If you don't like suffering, better pay close attention to light and water arrangement before paying and moving into a rented apartment.
Re: Can I Get A Refund Back? How Do I Approach My Landlord? by culf: 1:19pm On Jun 20, 2025
You won't pay for light but others pay and subscribe you will use, no na.

Bros, collect your money or rerent the house and have peace, find a better alternative

Na God save you...

Next time when you get a house, before payment, always ask about light and water. Even security of the area. Don't ever make the mistake of asking just one person.

Else, you'd be giving up ya peace of mind.

The landlord cab actually request for more prepaid meter or get a single phase meter in the market for each flat, so each tenant can contribute and recharge the main prepaid meter and it will be configured in each single meter connected to each flat depending on the amount you paid, with that, there won't be cheating anymore, because you can't tell me someone using hot plate, air-conditioner etc will be paying same amount with someone that doesn't have heavy appliances in his or her apartment.
