Only 3 Nigerian Universities In World Ranking, They Appear Outside Top 1000 by Great100000(op): 9:16am On Jun 21, 2025
Only three Nigerian universities made it to the list of the 2026 world university rankings released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) on Thursday, and none was in the top 1,000.

Quacquarelli Symonds is a higher education analyst that provides data, analytics and insight on the global higher education sector.

Its rankings rely on metrics such as academic and employer reputation, faculty, research citation counts, international students diversity, international research network, employment outcomes and sustainability.

The Nigerian institutions that made it to the ranking out of the 297 universities operating in the country are the University of Ibadan (UI), University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.

Checks showed that UI and UNILAG were ranked between 1001 and 1200, both in 2025 and 2026. While ABU was placed in the 1201–1400 band in the 2026 rankings, it had no available data for 2025.

The 2026 QS World University Rankings featured 1,501 institutions from 106 locations around the globe.

Alongside Nigeria, the ranking also featured names of universities from ten other countries in Africa. Egypt had 20 universities on the list, while South Africa had 11 and Tunisia had four.

Ghana and Morocco had two universities each on the list, while only one university each from Kenya, Libya, Sudan, Uganda and Ethiopia made an appearance.

Meanwhile, the two African universities that made it to the top 300 in the 2026 rankings are the University of Cape Town and the University of The Witwatersrand, both in South Africa. The former was ranked 150, while the latter was ranked 291.

The top 10 in the rankings are Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US; Imperial College London, UK; Stanford University, US; University of Oxford, UK; Harvard University, US; University of Cambridge, UK; ETH Zurich, Switzerland; National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore; University College London (UCL), UK; and California Institute of Technology (Caltech), US.

You're talking quantity not quality wink.

There are African countries with more soldiers than most European countries but how effective are their militaries against most European militaries?........this is where the issue of quality comes in. And such rankings are mostly based on quality not only the number of graduates.

Three out of nearly 300 universities, and none in the top 1,000, that says everything about our priorities as a nation. While other African countries are investing in research, innovation, and global partnerships, we’re still battling funding cuts, strikes, and outdated curricula.

It’s not that Nigerian students or lecturers lack brilliance, we export talent every day. The system simply doesn’t support excellence. Until education stops being treated like an afterthought and starts being funded, reformed, and led with vision, we’ll keep clapping from the sidelines while others lead the future.

Almost every edu-statistical organisation have their own indices for measuring the quality of universities.

Sometimes, politics, regional bias and prejudice cannot be ruled out.

UI and UNILAG are the most consistent Nigerian universities since they were established and more so in the past 20+ years. Yet, they are sinking.lower every year in global ranking.

The Nigeria Ministry of Education should take note.

No Chinese University in the top 10 , despite their contributions to research and innovations in science and Tech.
The list is biased.
Cuz, Chinese Universities are leading in Medicine, AI and Engineering.

The most recognised university ranking is by the Times Higher Education and many Nigerian universities made their rating of over 1000th positions.

That's no propaganda. You probably didn't do a core STEM program. If you study any IT program in any Nigerian universities, you will realise that you just wasted your 4 - 5 years. Government doesn't fund world-class tech labs and research studies.

UNILAG actually rank equal with UI on the ranking and both institutions are ahead of ABU. So the first place goes to UNILAG.

UNILAG is the number one ranked university in Nigeria and ties with another Nigerian institution.
Congratulations to UNILAG, U.I and ABU.

I expect OAU and UNN to join soon

Babangida killed OAU. That school was one of the hardest hit with brain drain migration wave of that era due to the rural location. After that it was just noisemaking with little substance.

I don't think private universities were included in that list. Because, no matter what happens, Covenant University should be in the first 1000.

How? Those are federal Universities. Funded by the federal government. You should be proud of Nigeria if there's something to be proud of but unfortunately there's nothing to be proud of because I saw 3 universities from South Africa there in the ranking making top 300. University of Cape town made top 150
