I use to blame my dad like u, mine was almost like yours , woman brought him down , but am happy before he passed away he helped me with were I can buy a land , a thing am proud of him , now I determine to never waste any opportunity given to me, forget him and push forward leave anything woman alone , usually I started understand that salary work is not good but business work on daily income, 12yrs I have not been married, but I have achieved a few properties on my own . Life was good for civil servants back then, my parents were civil servants n they were good.


Even now ordinary public school teacher on level 8 is collecting 120k which he can still manage with a working wife n children

Every body is just sounding right and no one is asking if he was educated or if he worked as a security man,or a cleaner in the ministry or parastatal.

No-one is also asking if he was financially literate to invest money then and na only bashing we dey hear.

No need for too much talk, the world is waiting for you to right his wrongs. achieve those things he couldn't achieve so your kids don't end up saying the same to you. it's always easy to point fingers and shift blames

So many of us has a bigger story to tell, but we chose to work hard insteady telling the story, because as u come out here lamenting what have u achieved? Nothing, some of us don't have a father, and our poor mom has done her best to make sure we did not die when we are younger, that ends it, we did everything by the grace of God, I went through hell, I don't even have anyone to blame, I'm the last born, and I'm over 40, I love my brothers and sisters, no that they did not treat me well, they apologize at this old age, but we move,

Instead of you to go and plan your life, you are here blaming your father. Tomorrow, your own child will blame you too and the circle continues. Try get sense, you can never know the story of your dad till you sit down with him and talk. We are always judgment in issues that have to do with men not knowing these men shed hidden tears.

As long as he provided shelter , food , clothing medicals and education....he did what alot can't do ... u sef go and do ur own ...no be every papa go buy or build house ...

This OP I just feel your pain, You just remind me of the conversation I had with my dad, I already have two houses I told him this one you are staying on rent why don't you look for land in the village so that we can buy even a plot and build like two bedroom flat, you are approaching 70 and still living on rent his response is that building of house is a waste of resource and money, I told him he's growing old and is embarrassing staying on rent. I thought I persuaded him I never knew I was wasting my time. He lied to me that he had seen the land and that I should send money I sent to him he requested three trips of sand I sent to him. If I ask him about the sand and if they have tipped it he will just laugh.

It is easy to call others failure based on our perception of them.

There are cycles and patterns which repeat itself in families, either good or bad. From your explanation, this is a gloomy pattern which you will have to break if you don't want your kids to accuse you like you are doing to you dad now. Believe me, it will take time, dedication, watchfulness laced with spirituality hence... you as well might by mistake slip into it. Please do it for your own lineage, sacrifice all to be the liberator.

You have said it all bro, thanks. Very well put. To break negative patterns in a family , one must first recognize them and be dissatisfied, even angry about them. And be willing to pay the price necessary.

I'm sure your dad gave you basic and even post basic education. If that's the case, the onus is on you to utilise that and fend for yourself. It is very wrong and unrealistic to expect your civil servant father to give you all the comforts your selfish mind craves. Not every father is privileged enough to make huge wealth he can bequeath to his children.

Even if he didn't give you education, it is still your responsibility to enter the street, learn good skills or trades and make money for yourself. Where I come from, before now, men gave a rat asz about their children once they have come of age. They start early enough to direct their children towards the path of independence. But in this generation, children spend greater parts of their lives pursuing western education only to come back home afterwards to still depend on their parents. It's too bad!

Ask yourself, how much wealth did your father inherit from his own father? It's mostly likely he inherited little to nothing! So, what magic do you expect him to perform Remember there's nothing much in civil service except if one is in an organisation that has opportunities to loot!

So, in a nutshell, stop blaming your old man, see it like he did what he did based on his own capability and try hard to surpass him. Try hard to improve on those areas you think he made mistakes so that your sons will not call you useless father someday.
