The Kebbi State Government is considering a legal amendment that would enforce the death penalty or life imprisonment for anyone convicted of serving as an informant to bandits operating within the state.

Governor Comrade Nasiru Idris made the disclosure on Tuesday while paying condolence visits to Tadurga village in Zuru and Kyebu in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Areas, following recent attacks that claimed at least 30 lives and led to cattle rustling.

The governor condemned the role of informants, describing them as deadly agents aiding insecurity. He affirmed that the state would take the issue of security with utmost seriousness and would not hesitate to impose harsh penalties on those found guilty of aiding terrorism.

Security Response Measures

Governor Idris announced plans to establish an Army Operational Base in the Zuru Emirate to beef up security. Additionally, he revealed that Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and other equipment have already been deployed to Kebbi from Abuja.

“We are here to see things for ourselves, commiserate with you and reassure you about the urgent actions we’ve taken to bolster the security of lives and property,” Idris stated.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritizing security, noting that over the past year, the state government:

1. Procured 80 Hilux patrol vehicles for security agencies
2. Distributed 1,500 motorcycles to local vigilante groups
3. Increased operational allowances for security operatives
4. Caution Against Political Manipulation

Governor Idris also urged the public to refrain from politicizing security matters or spreading unguarded statements on social media, warning that misinformation could jeopardize ongoing efforts to restore peace in vulnerable areas.

Traditional Leaders React

Speaking during the visits, the Chief of Danko Chiefdom, Alhaji Ibrahim Al'aji, and the Chief of Dabai Chiefdom, Alhaji Suleiman Sami, thanked the governor for his proactive steps. They stressed that security was a shared responsibility and called for increased surveillance along porous entry points used by criminals from neighboring states.

Also expressing his appreciation, the Emir of Zuru, Rtd. Major General Sani Sami, praised Governor Idris’s efforts and pledged continued support to combat criminality within the Emirate.

Governor Idris ended his visit with prayers for the repose of the deceased and a speedy recovery for those injured in the attacks, reiterating that Kebbi will never tolerate acts that endanger innocent lives.

But the bandit can be negotiated and rehabilitated back into the society.
