In 1990, British Airways Flight 5390 was cruising at over 17,000 feet when the cockpit windshield suddenly blew off. The rush of air was instant and violent and it nearly took Captain Tim Lancaster with it.

Sucked halfway out of the plane, only his legs remained hooked on the controls. The rest of him flailed outside in the freezing wind.
Flight attendant Nigel Ogden had just entered the cockpit and without thinking, he lunged and grabbed the captain’s belt.

For nearly 20 minutes, as the aircraft screamed toward emergency descent, Ogden held on with everything he had. The wind was deafening. Temperatures dropped below freezing. And Lancaster’s body was slamming against the fuselage, every second threatening to take them both.

The co-pilot, Alastair Atchison, managed to reroute the plane toward Southampton Airport. Ogden’s arms locked, his body aching, he refused to let go believing that if Lancaster slipped, he’d strike the engine or wing and doom the aircraft.

Against every odds, the plane landed safely. Lancaster was alive, frostbitten, bruised, and broken, but alive. Ogden suffered frostbite and a dislocated shoulder. But because of his courage, 81 passengers went home that day. It's a story of instinct, grit, and the sheer power of refusing to let go—no matter what.

This near-crash incident was attributed to an engineer who used the wrong screw size to hold the windscreen in place.

While the flight attendant was the hero of the day, the copilot really did a great job on the controls to get the jumbo to the ground. Amazing he survived to fly again. Weldone to him and the crew.

This was an unbelievable incident, something no one could believe even after seeing it with their own eyes. But when God decides to protect someone, no one can harm them.

There are very few professions that require the skill and courage top airline pilot need to have on tap at a moments notice.

To go from routine to life and death within seconds is not for the faint hearted nor the casual with a thought system that is shielded from bad economies, relationship turbulence or fear itself.

The co-pilot swiftly took over the controls and descended to lower altitude in order to contain the sudden decompression of the plane and enhance breathing. Achieve stability, then landed the plane.
