The Eko Electricity Distribution Company has taken steps towards ending estimated billing among its customers.

The DisCo said the company currently operates two metering schemes approved by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Meter Asset Provider scheme and the Meter Acquisition Fund initiative.

According to the utility company, the MAF was introduced to provide prepaid meters to Band A customers.

Speaking during the inaugural customer engagement session held recently under the newly established Ajele District within EKEDC’s service network, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of EKEDC, Mrs Rekhiat Momoh, addressed customers’ complaints about estimated billing and meter acquisition.

Represented at the event by the Chief Financial Officer, Mr Joseph Esenwa, the CEO reiterated the company’s commitment to deepening community engagement and improving customer experience.

He expressed appreciation for the turnout, especially by the Oba of Lagos’ delegation who attended the gathering.

While addressing the concerns over estimated billing practices and current prepaid metering processes, Momoh explained, “At Eko DisCo, we currently operate two metering schemes approved by the regulator: the Meter Asset Provider scheme and the Meter Acquisition Fund initiative.


The MAF, introduced under the Presidential Metering Initiative, aims to provide prepaid meters, currently prioritising Band A customers, by channelling government-backed funding through MAP providers to address metering shortfalls,” she said.

Momoh appealed to customers to assist in identifying individuals responsible for energy theft and to report such activities, emphasising the collective role of the community in safeguarding electricity infrastructure and improving service delivery.

She added that the Ajele District, carved out of the existing Islands District, was created to foster stronger relationships with residents in key Lagos Island communities such as Iga Idunganran, Oba of Lagos Palace, Adeniji Adele, Idumagbo, Broad Street, Lewis, Marina, Leventis, Onikan, King George, and Isale-Eko.

Meanwhile, the White Cap Chiefs delegation of the Oba of Lagos, led by the Obanikoro of Lagos & Ido Oluwo lle, Chief Adesoji Ajayi-Bembe, reaffirmed support for EKEDC’s efforts to curb energy theft, noting that reducing infractions would contribute to improved power supply across the region.

However, he also raised urgent safety concerns amid the rainy season and called on the DisCo to enhance protective measures, especially against vandalism of electrical assets, with backing from government and community stakeholders.

He urged community leaders to sensitise residents to illegal connections and the use of unauthorised technicians, encouraging them instead to report faults through official EKEDC customer service channels.

Eko DisCo is a terribly run company. I don't understand how people own a business and allow their employees turn the company into a cash cow.

This is the same company where their workers use personal accounts to receive payments for estimated bills.

If they explain Nigeria to you and you understand it, they didn't explain it properly.

Do they have enough meters...That should be the first move

In my area,we have been enjoying 24hours light most times I get tire of the the constant light

Believe me when I tell you that I'll happily embrace band A to estimated billing. In estimated billing even if you don't have light for 2weeks nepa would give you outrageous bill. In Band A you can move your change over to neutral if you're going out to preserve your units. You can determine how long you want it to last.

The highest you can spend as a band A user if you're living in a flat with 2 inverter ACs, deep freezer, TV and other smaller electronics is 50k per month. That's about 200 units (or more if you're given bonus)

What you should know about band A is that the consumption rate is the same as other bands. The only difference is the cost of units.

Estimated billing on the other hand is crazy. I've see an estimated bill of 387k on Twitter. For a flat. And one crazy fact about estimated billing is that your bill keeps increasing every month. It never goes down.

You captured the points perfectly. We are under Eko Disco in my area here, and their services and the behaviour of their staff are a joke!
And it seems they love to punish customers who try to do the right thing.

Ask your State Govs. Electricity is now at the State level and states can partner with the Fed to make this happen. ALAS, some Govs are fast asleep

Thanks to the new Electricity deregulation law.

They know Lagos State government is working to bring in new private sector electricity providers.

Eko Disco wants to get ready before the competitors arrive.

This goes to show that these Discos have intentionally been blocking a more widespread supply of meters.

You are very correct.

Imagine getting new meters installed and they didn't activate the meter so we could purchase electricity token, the 100unit that came with it finished and we remained in darkness for over 2months despite several calls and emails sent, nothing was done until we had to bribe a staff to help activate the meters and it was done in less than 2hrs.

The corruption in that company is humongous.

Very much needed especially in this times where government is withdrawing all subsidies.

Coz here in this country we really don't know how to minimise and utilize electricity..
If they force people to get meter and give constant 24/7 light, many many houses will be using bulb and fan only lol.. nothing more 😂... Coz for a minimum wage of 70k, many people can't afford to buy more than 5k worth of light in a month.. that's if they can buy up to sef...

I will never forget the day I went to argue my case at eko disco.

I took evidence of video recordings of my meter as well as the last bill I received.


My meter reading on the bill was far ahead of my physical meter. After turning me up and down, I'd lost my temper and screamed

A staff there told me that someone has used the electricity and someone has to pay. I refused

They cut my light the next week. After back and forth I had to pay the bill. Prior to that I had started making moves for prepaid meter

Imagine when they installed the meter they put 100k + bill on it.

I got all the way to nerc on the matter. Back and forth. Once you load units they'll collect part of it first and leave the rest. Till they collected almost 70k.

Nerc then resolved and said they should remove the 30k + left

Since I've got prepaid I have peace now.

Everybody should have meter but if done, most people won't have light but they have meter...
Maybe as time goes on, people will begin to adjust..

Which one is meter acquisition fund? Are meters not the property of the DISCOs? Discos are obligated to provide meters, they re expected to buy meters and install for customers. You don't ask customers to take loans to buy meters for you.

This is one area the got has not been sincere in tackling. There are indigenous companies that manufacture meters in Nigeria, why are these Discos not patronizing them?

Why must they go to India and China to buy meters?

Now they don't even want to provide meters they want customers to buy meters for them and still get crazy billings from them.

We need real reforms in the energy sector it has not justified the billions wasted on it. Customers buy armoured cables transformers , pole and meters , these thieves just come and start billing even without ensuring that the area has been connected to the grid.

Those of you who finish building a house or an estate and want to connect it know this for a fact

Ikeja electric needs the message more. Imagine #57, 0000 as estimated billing. For six months continuously. Ikeja electric are thieves

They will target you, increase your bill and ask you to settle them for lower bills for a periods of 2-3 months, the moment you defaults, your bills will fly hight again


Imagine 8 single rooms given #30000, estimate bill for a month, they manage to pay, and they even pay quickly to avoid disconnect ion,

Next month they hiked it to #65000, with same usage of light
