Poly Ibadan Students Reject Renaming of Institution To Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic.

The students want the name of the institution to be the polytechnics, Ibadan.

Governor Seyi Makinde should just look for any other Oyo State owned tertiary institution to be named after the renowned Mathematical Genius Dr Victor Omololu Olulonyo.

Oyo State has some Colleges of Agriculture that could be named after him.

Na ehn all this higher institutions with people's names are disgusting! Thank God for Unilag that outrightly rejected the The Moshud Abiola name during the time of GEJ. Immortalization of roads building etc is good but not higher institutions.

Imagine those that certificates had already been issued to, and whoever they present it to want to confirm it.

This is the way Ogun state governor (Segun Osoba) destroyed the very popular and respected Ogun State University and named it Olabisi Onabano University.
They destroyed the brand name and turned it into a second class university.

Why are governments at all levels in this God forsaken country so shallow? These name changes do nothing but destroy long standing brands in the country.

What difference does a name change make to the students?
Whether the polytechnic is renamed or not, the certificates and grades remain the same.
Academic and non-academic staff will still go on strike.
Cultism won’t suddenly disappear.
So really, what’s the point?

Let's name it ... Bola Ahmed Tinubu Polytechnic Ibadan, let's see whether they will complain 😹

This madness of waking up overnight and naming an institution that is known with a particular name for over half a century after someone that just died is sickening.

Name a new institution or project you carried out if there is any after him not the institution with a known name.

As an akokites, I was highly disgusted when I heard what Jonathan was planning on doing. Thank God it didn't work. They wanted to spoil the legacy of that great school.

Exactly. I always wonder if these guys actually went to school. A brand that was built over decades, you just wake up one morning and say you want to rename it.

Can we talk about this habit in Nigeria where every new government comes in and starts renaming institutions instead of building new ones?

It’s like the only idea they have is to repaint, rename, and rebrand. Not to create or improve anything meaningful.

Universities, airports, roads, stadiums… things that already have identity and legacy, they just slap a new name on it and call it achievement.

It’s not only lazy. It’s wicked.

Look at other countries.
Oxford University in the UK has carried the same name for over 900 years.
Harvard University in the US has kept its name for nearly 400 years.
Even places like Times Square in New York or Buckingham Palace in London still carry the names that shaped their history.

You don’t see them changing names every election cycle.

You're not honoring anyone by doing that. You’re erasing history and confusing the next generation.

Prestige isn’t built by renaming. It’s built by vision, legacy, and impact.

But the man was a great man and it is an honor to be associated with his name , do these kids know that the guy was a genius?

The governor is a temporary custodian not owner.
The name of school is its branding. Imagine changing the name of Harvard to something else. It’ll immediately lose all the years of educational branding.
That’s what happened to OOU.

The name is the problem I guess... They need a poised name . Omololu Olunloyo

I summoned courage go meet the guy. I met them at Abe igi, (you still remember that spot?) I saw the guy amidst othe Frats in a circle.

I called him, Remi!

He looked back. And the other guys informed "thats the guy"

He looked back again and ignored me.

I called again. Remi, can I see you please.
He felt reluctant but the other guys told him to go and listen to what I had to say.

He came over and I shook his hand "im Kunle," (not my real name though, )

He looked at me and said "En henn, hows that your problem?"

I smiled.

"Well, please dont beat her again. Its not her fault. It is mine." I said.

The guy looked at me strangely. Like who be dis one?

I repeated, "it's my fault. She told me she had a boyfriend, that the person isn't around. But I thought it was one of those things babes say to wade off guys. Anyways, I back off,"

I gave my hand to him for a shake. He took it and I returned back to my room. Since that day, I stopped seeing the lady.
